Civ V got it correct that there are three pillars of political ideology - Liberalism, Socialism/Communism and Nationalism/Fascism. This is enlightening because it allows one to think in three dimensions - not the two dimensions of that dumb social vs economic liberty graph, and certainly not the one-dimensional thinking that describes everything as "leftwing" or else "rightwing". "Conservative" is not the opposite of Liberal; Western conservatives are merely old-fashioned adherents to Liberal ideology. What it got wrong was positing that the three ideologies are opposed. In fact, they are complementary, like colors. Man must have freedom, man must have bread, and man must have meaning. A child must learn to share, to fight and to be himself. Liberalism lets a man breathe free and be creative, but he cannot do that without equality and Socialism. Socialism requires a New Man, but only Fascism can create the New Man. This unity-of-three-vectors-of-being even shows up in the trinitary gods of PIE cultures. A mere liberal is a degenerate. A mere fascist is a brute. A mere socialist is a drone. A man who is all three is a whole person. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. E Pluribus Unum. Western Civilization is built on these three pillars.

Actually, I favor a balance. A harmony between Liberalism, Fascism and Socialism.

Almost, "war monger" was an AI trait, and like all traits in Civ 1 it went from 0-10 where 0 was the least war mongering, Gandhi was set to 0. These traits could change as you played though, and if you then did something to make Gandhi less of a war monger, the scale looped around, from 0 to 10 and then Gandhi went all nuke happy.

The epiphany actually started with art history. Fascism is, ultimately, an aesthetic stance.

Mmm, yes, a hybrid fascism/communism/capitalism build. Cool. We'll pick all the best talents from each tree and skip all the filler. I'm sorry D&D probated you for your enlightened videogame politics, OP.

in civ 5 for a pittance you can convince all your rivals to keep fighting pointless wars with each other while you become the undisputed world super power so maybe it's right about a few things

I always played the computer on the highest difficulty setting and I rarely won. Seems like autocracy always gave me the best shot. Oh, I'd turn off the technology victory condition because the computer would lob a rocket into space by about 1650 AD*. I used to think it was odd that it was so hard to keep people happy under the "Freedom" ideology. But I guess it's about right, as the folks in free nations just find ways to make themselves miserable and the poor bastards living under oppressive regimes are just happy to be alive and maybe not being bludgeoned by a cudgel at any given moment. As for learning things from video games, I did learn the rules of professional hockey from playing EA NHL hockey on a Sega Genesis in the early '90s. *May be an exaggeration.
