So I was reading this profile of the new New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern

She's from the "Labour Party", but does that mean a genuine centre-left party? I'm wary of labels not meaning what they mean.

It says she's a former staffer for Blair, and that she wants to "cut immigration", but the decriminalizing abortion and free college parts of the platform seem good.

Anyone have more background on this?

It really remains to be seen how leftwing she is. She was the leader of the socialist youth, but that was like 15 years ago so who knows how much she's changed since then.

Labour as a whole are very slightly left of center. They still have a lot of links to unions here, and their actual constitution puts them as democratic socialism. But we also had the poo poo years of Rogernomics where labour privatised anything it could get its hands on and finance took over from manufacturing, leading to masses of layoffs and a skyrocketing rate of youth suicide.

So it's no US democratic party, but it's also no socialist paradise.
