I downloaded a couple of male and female level 1 savegames years ago, where they have finished the intro and are at the end of Vault 111 and i never had any problems loading those with any configuration. The idea being that as long as you haven't left the vault, you can load pretty much everything in and it will just count as starting a new game. Usually i save after re-configuring my character at the vault exit elevator and reload that save two or three times to get all the mods to register.

In between those loads I tend to player.setlevel xx my char to whatever i feel like to stop the levelup message spam. (it stops when you reload the save)

Similarly, you can use SLM 14 to change your character whenever you want ( if you have Looksmenu installed, which i recommend ) but do it in a settlement that you are allowed to build in because the camera can bug out if you do this. Then activating building mode snaps the camera back and you can keep playing.

Gonna throw out a couple of mods i feel are integral to a fun experience and i haven't had many problems with :
(theres always something broken in these games regardless what you do)

Unlimited Companion Framework
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11829?tab=description
[dismiss companion and pick em up later to fix it if anything goes wrong]

Locky Bastard
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13380
blow up locks on doors or kick them etc [stops working if you have a mod that uses the same activation button or something like Sandman Kills or vampire feeding, lol]

Extended Grenade Timer
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4944
reverse pickpocketed live grenades take longer to explode so it feels more usable if you want to blow up assholes in Diamond City or something

Live Dismemberment
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/16400
Extremely cruel but exceedingly funny because this is a stupid game and its also Fallout, see also :
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23780

Unarmed Gameplay Overhaul
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41239
Flipkicks and poo poo like the kung fu max payne mod if anyone remembers that

:siren: MOST IMPORTANT MOD OF ALL TIME :siren:
Survival Options
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/14650
Go to save options and select Give Autosave Item ---> bind it like a stimpak or weapon to a slot and Autosave at command. I.E. before you do anything worthwhile

Keep your program files save folder under 10 GB but make lots of manual saves. Thank you and god bless

Start Me Up Redux is a very good alternative to the basic way of keeping a premade save past the start, and adds a lot of options to let you adjust what your starting carried stuff is and what level you are, as well as an optional trait system like the older generation Fallout games (things like Four Eyes, Small Frame etc)
It is still being maintained and the mod author has said they're going to updated it when the "Next Gen Update" happens

I assumed that post was referring to Lucy and her actress, but I couldn't find anything supporting that either. Closest I could find was that she had friends/brothers who played the games.

I have used this in the past and it's neat yeah. I think i ran into a compat issue at one point and stopped using it, maybe it's time to bring it back. I always enjoyed picking a custom background and starting in a appropriate location.

Using Better Locational Damage and it's working mostly pretty well. Rocket launchers are deadly one hit kills but so are miniguns.

I had to turn off the headshot system because it was too much. The mod page says that there's a way to adjust the overall damage output but I wasn't seeing it in the MCM or holotape menus.

BLD is the one with scripted headshots right?

Yeah. I deactivated the scripted headshots and I'm using the Head Destruction module instead. Heashots instakill only after the head health is reduced to 0.

Shouldn't, wabbajack makes a whole new game directory. Make sure fallout is set to not auto update to be safe

Oh drat I didn't realize it made a new game directory entirely, I thought it just virtual file system'd the mods and leaned on the original steam install.

I set the game to only update on launch because I can't find an option to disable updates entirely, is that what I want?

Yeah, only on launch.

MO2 does the virtual filesystem thing (even for the wabba installs) but if you go to the install directory you used for life in the ruins you'll see a whole game install directory that it created. One of the post install steps for LitR has you running scripts from in there to point it at the proper launcher

e: Also, having played LitR for a couple days now, I gotta say the new megacritters it scatters around are annoying for progression. Like the literal first SOS2 quest you get after "set up your initial settlement" is "go to west everett", and there's some 10 foot tall orange mutant hound guarding the place now. Sure, it's optional, but still marginally annoying

it's not just optional, engaging the hostile super mutants is also optional, you can just go to the waypoint from the north and not aggro anything

Wabbajack only does that if a modlist makes use of a Stock Game Folder (literally just a copy of the original game folder), thankfully LitR is one of those modlists, so your installation is safe, even if Steam pushes the update through. The modlist author for LitR has stated the ETA for a Next-Gen version of LitR is "months, years, maybe never". It's all dependent on how much disruption the update causes and especially how long it'll take the mods LitR depend on to get updated.

Yes. Thanks to the Stock Game Folder it doesn't actually matter much, if at all.

Extremely. Script extender needs an update at the bare minimum, everything else will be mildly to totally broken too. It's gonna be great.

What Sim Settlements now has a plot? I thought it was just supposed to automate the settlement building system so it wasn't such an exhausting game of doll house to find the one right wall texture or footlocker.
