I never got too deep into SW but it sounds the same. If you upgrade with the same character you have a chance to unlock an Awaken spot. Either you outright succeed (by the % listed on the unit after you select it), or it adds a % to your Awaken meter to increase your odds the next time you do it.

Also that LightFire1 code link didn't work for me until I fully exited the app. Then I got an error message but noticed I had a ton of stuff in my inbox waiting for me.
