I only just found the thread, but I absolutely love doing these sort of things. Can I take the Lightning if they're still available?Infidel Castro posted:For the first time ever I beat mentholmoose to the thread and thus claim my beloved Flyers. Yo. Let's fight about it.

So, I've been considering two options, both of which I know won't last another five picks. My first option is probably the better player overall. That said, I'm going to pick my second option, Tyler Seguin because he's signed for an extremely affordable $5.75 million for the next three years, he's a center, and both his fancy and traditional stats are still excellent. Also Peter Chiarelli traded him away for peanuts, so you know he's good. Good Soldier Svejk is up now.

Paulocaust, Kaner was the other player I was considering when I took Seguin. I think Kane is likely the better player overall; the thing that swayed me toward Seguin instead was the cap hit. I don't care how good he is, I can't justify spending roughly 14% of my cap on a single player. lazerwolf, I'm not sure Pavelski is the center I would've taken there, but he's still drat good.

Otis Reddit got skipped at 9:18 Eastern and can pick whenever. Boomer the Cannon has until tomorrow to make a pick I believe. I want to pick some terrible dude tonight, pick quick people.

I might have taken Trouba if he fell to the fifth, but I'm not convinced he can be a top pairing defenseman in the NHL. I just don't think the offense is there to make him anything more than a 2nd pair guy.

Boomer The Cannon posted:He's never had a shot at the NHL level, with the depth that Winnipeg has. He's gotten 22 minutes a night and only missed 1 game last season. To be fair, it looks like they cut back on his power play time, and he's obviously young. e:fb; I think if you pick up a veteran puck mover in the later rounds, that would open up opportunities for Trouba to ease into the role of a power play quarterback. What I'm saying is the Winnipeg Jets should trade for Mark Streit IRL.

I'm gonna take one of the best young D-men left, Sami Vatanen. He got top-pairing minutes and scored 38 points last season in 71 games. Also he only just turned 25. Aye Doc and Otis Reddit are both up.

Phone posting again, you guys sure love getting to my picks while I'm at work or drinking. I'll take Ben Bishop.

Alright, while I have a moment, I'll expand on the Bishop pick. Over the past three seasons, he's played 60+ games each year, has two Vezina nominations, and the fifth best save percentage of any goalie with at least 5000 minutes over that period. He's a workhorse, and he's still on the good side of 30, unlike a few of the other goaltenders taken in recent rounds. And, for the hell of it, my lineup so far: Seguin-Backstrom-Voracek Vatanen Bishop

I think the Nuge is due for a breakout year. He might not be the center I would've taken, but he's good value at this point in the draft. Same thing with Pastrnak, if he can stay healthy. e: I definitely like Spurgeon more than Demers, but I didn't realize how good he's actually been. mentholmoose fucked around with this message at 17:32 on Jul 14, 2016 |

Tech is still on until 7:17 Eastern, the last pick was at 5:17. Also, I'm beginning to think the guy I want might actually last until my pick, which means that he will now get taken three picks before hand.

OK, now Metapod is up, until 9:17 Eastern, then Ginette Reno can pick too. Tech can still pick whenever.

Ginette Reno posted:Alright, give me Sean Couturier so that Malkin doesn't have to worry about getting shut down by him, and also because he's a fantastic shutdown center with untapped offensive potential. Fancies are great. This makes me feel better about drafting only one defenseman; I won't be alone in relying on 2nd pairing defensemen to make up my top pairing. I'd put Kuzya on the wing with Malkin and Landeskog, and put Henrique and Couturier on the second line together; that second line would be a dominant two-way group.

I'm reasonably certain nobody has taken Daniel Sedin, so I'll take him. I'm not sure why he's available this late, but now he isn't. e: Dank-Seguin-Voracek Backstrom Vatanen Bishop

Ok, I'll take Sam Bennett and say gently caress defensemen. I'm not sure if he's going to stick at center, so for now I'll throw him on a line with Backstrom. Flyinglemur is up. Wennberg is a good choice; I was debating between him and a couple other young guys for my next pick, which hopefully I'll be able to make tonight.

Alright, I'll take Michael Stone. I know he's injured, but he played 20 minutes a game last season and handled it really well, plus he's only 26. Twenty minute a night defensemen are incredibly rare at this stage, so I'm glad to have him. e: And I'm fairly certain he'll be back at most a month into the season. Alright, I'm gonna take J.T. Miller. He's young, he's cheap, he scored 20 goals, and the fancy stats seem to like him. Plus now I've got like four centers I can shuffle around depending on who's available. Daniel Sedin-Tyler Seguin-Jake Voracek x-Nicklas Backstrom-Sam Bennett x-J.T. Well, I know I'm doing something right if I took somebody else's number one choice. I'd like to hear a few words on the faux-Lightning if people get the chance. There was a hell of an emphasis on defense this draft, moreso than the previous ones, and I think it skipping D-men in the first few picks might come back to bite me in the rear end; on the other hand I couldn't have snagged so many good forwards if I had taken more D-men.

Honk honk! I'm taking Julius Honka. Who knows if he'll be any good, but I'm fairly certain he'll be better than any of the random vets left over. Plus he's cheap. I think he's still available, so I'll take the part man, part cat, part horse... Tomas Plekanec.

# ¿ Jul 27, 2016 14:07 |

That's a good, young defense. I'm not sure Maatta is ever going to live up to the hype after those injuries, but you've got two other top four talents, and Jones, who's going to be a beast. While we're posting teams I might as well post mine after the Plekanec pick: Daniel Sedin-Tyler Seguin-Jake Voracek J.T. Miller-Nicklas Backstrom-Sam Bennett x-Tomas Plekanec-x Sami Vatanen-Michael Stone Julius Honka-Dan Hamhuis Ben Bishop A couple vets or maybe a vet and a prospect to round out my third pairing should make a competent if not great defense, and a couple good wingers should give me three scoring lines. I'm not sure J.T. Miller can handle a top six role yet, so I might move him down to the third.
