My friend had a band and they played a local bar and I was invited on stage to sing Zappa's "Bobby Brown" instead of him as a number, because we were both kinda into Zappa and he knew I knew the song by heart. It was pretty cool. Sheik Yerbouti was a good album and we listened to it a lot back in the 80's. autoaim.cfg fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Jun 19, 2016 |

I could listen to the entirety of Hot Rats, Apostrophe and Joe's Garage non-stop for days. They are glorious, meticulously perfect albums. Top ten tracks from Zappa (and the Mothers), in my poo poo opinion? 1. Billy the Mountain 2. The Yellow Shark 3. The Jazz Discharge Party Hats 4. Yo' Mama 5. Tinseltown Rebellion 6. Ship Ahoy 7. Wind up Workin' in a Gas Station 8. Baby, Take Your Teeth Out 9. Watermelon in Easter Hay 10. Penguin in Bondage

That's the thing about it og Frank Zappa was super cool, but nobody who supports him can be anything beyond king of the lamer nerds because most of his coolness was a factor of inaccessibility and indifference, which his fans necessarily lack

It's catchy, short and easy for an unfamiliar crowd to get their feet wet to something more flavorful. I would have otherwise replaced it with Jones Crusher or Tell Me You Love Me for the same reasons; but I also already chose a track from Tinseltown Rebellion.

Heres my opinions: Entry level: Apostrophe: Very juvenile humour but its a good album the whole way through Hot Rats: Everyone likes hot rats If you like it Joes Garage: I think it goes for 2+ hours but its good and you have to listen to it in one go its like an opera Freak out!: This is my favourite, i think it was one of his first and the humour/sillyness is more subtle The one that looks like the beatles covfer that i cant remember the name of: very good as well Then try the rest and find some songs you like in the 1000 albums he made We're oonly in it for the money*

I never understood why Joe's Garage is rated so highly. I like a couple of songs from the album but as a whole I find it very unappealing. To me it's like a symbolic turning point in his career for the worse. Of the original material composed after Joe's Garage I think only You Are What You Is, Jazz from Hell and Yellow Shark are any good. I guess my favorite period of Zappa's career is the sleazy stuff from the 70s, peaking with Zoot Allures. I'm also really fond of this stupid routine from Fillmore East for some reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5RFzWUC5nM

I tend to like the 70s to early 80s period the best. Aside from the ones already mentioned, stand outs include: The Grand Wazoo Waka/Jawaka Over-nite Sensation One Size Fits All Sheik Yerbouti Sut Up and Play Yer Guitar You Are What You Is Ship Arriving Too Late To Save a Drowning Witch The Man From Utopia

I'm a huge Zappa fan but even I have to admit that he has several albums that I just don't like at all and will probably never listen to again. His early stuff is great, but I find a lot of his 80's stuff to be meandering and irritating.

Saw ZPZ in Albany NY for the 40th anniversary of Roxy & Elsewhere. It was an incredible show, they played the whole album pretty much note for note, and they even did the skits! Dweezil also does guitar workshops before the shows, he's a really cool guy.
