I'm going to have to admit that I had never heard of Frank Zappa until after hearing "Genius in France" on Weird Al's album Poodle Hat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VuiBBX6aZA So, I had to find out more about this Zappa fellow and picked up You Are What You Is. Hooked ever since. On that note, I think an underrated song from YAWYI is... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xhrmkrm5fg

No mention of 200 Motels? I'm a fan of the early Zappa/Mothers of Invention era, and Joe's Garage. I'm more into that early sound that the Mothers created. Lots of great tunes and silly songs that had to be censored for radio play back in the day.

I saw this show too, Victoria BC. Tons of fun. Got him to sign my Duckman DVDs afterward. the one album i kinda like is "we're only in it for the money" because it's basically just him saying "the whole loving east coast moved here and hosed up san francisco for everyone else" which really is a timeless message anyone of any generation can relate to

the most effective way my coworkers can ruin my day is by putting on either Phish, Ween, or Zappa, although i will give the latter two a smidgen of credit because not every second of music they ever produced was pure garbage.

I also knew that Lowell George was the vocals on that song, but I only yesterday found out that Roy Estrada was also part of Little Feat. Also, didn't Roy Estrada wind up screwing around with a minor and wind up in jail? Or am I thinking of someone else? E: Oh gently caress I just looked it up and it's worse than I thought. Always gotta post this fun fact: Frank Zappa invented iTunes/Spotify basically, as a cable driven on-demand purchase driven audio streaming service. In his autobiography he talks about trying to sell studios and telecom companies on the idea and it failing to gain traction. https://www.amazon.com/Real-Frank-Zappa-Book/dp/0671705725/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466467758&sr=8-1&keywords=frank+zappa+autobiography It was published in 1990.

Man I need to order that book. I haven't read it since high school in the late 90's. I remember it being lots of great stories, his theories on music, and IIRC, whacky libertarian politics. I'd like to see how I feel about his opinions 20 years later.

I think it's awesome that he cut his hair, shaved, and wore a nice suit to those TV/Congress appearances on censorship. You know those fuckers probably hated that he didn't show up in wacky clothing and long hair so they could take potshots.

The only reason I know Zappa is cuz a friend from high school loved singing "Catholic Girls" but only like random lines in the middle of conversation. He also did that with Type O Negative songs. The protag is trying to gently caress a cyborg who speaks German before it calibrates to English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohhUIbVPUHQ Joe's garage is great. That's my two cents! Edit: wait I think it's a cyborg pig. And it's very a clean-sofa conscious song! TheArtist 314 fucked around with this message at 14:47 on Jun 21, 2016 |
