it's the Akane Tendo school of cooking, like good sense to know potatoes and apples have similar textures - but not enough sense to realize you can't swap one for the other in a recipe like that.

Satsuko, stop complaining about Goon focusing more on studies than romance when you are the one who raised the bar on exams :argh:

More importantly, the tone whiplash of a goofy giraffe swing set while someone says "Everything needs to die :geno: " is amazing.

It is pretty great, it's why I keep using that image for whenever that scene comes up.

This game is pretty whiplashy in general. You get a Kasumi scene one day and then the next, you'll talk to someone like Suzu or Rena.

: Hey! What're you doing?

: Oh, sorry... I'm reading this guide. It's for modding a game system to play imports. Somebody asked me to, and I've never done it. I get it all except this one thing... see? I'm worried to do it without a full understanding since the system's expensive. So what do you think?

: Okay, could you explain it to me?

Game: You quickly explain to Kazuki the point he doesn't understand.

: OH. I get it now! You're awesome, Goon. I was so stumped on that.

: Is that good?

Never actually gotten this point of XP before. I didn't realise we qualified as good at Science.

The usual comes and goes, not much change here. Also Satsuko came by to congratulate us on being well-rounded again.

We have enough XP to get a point of Fitness so I grab that. Good Fitness is important for sports and other scenes that pops up consistently.

Wednesday, June 14

: Hey, what's up?

: Nothing really, I'm just glad it's lunch time.

: Man, what a rough morning...

: I'll say...

: Hey Rena.

: Hehe, I just got this incredible bolt of inspiration for a sculpture.

: Oh?

: I don't want to tell you what it is, but I'll tell you that I need to make a full-body cast of a person.

: Full body cast?

: Alright, I'll do it.

This is a Sports check. We should be fine.

: Really?

: Sure, it couldn't hurt. Just make sure you leave me breathing holes...

: Hehe, of course! Let's do it soon, okay?

: Sure, sounds good.

Next day, we get the next event.

: As ready as I'll ever be, I guess...

: Okay, here we go!

Game: Rena begins the process of creating a mold. After what feels like forever, she finally seems done.

: All done with making the mold, we just have to wait for this outer shell to dry. Are you okay in there, Goon?

I'd probably laugh if this event could cause a reset.

: Teehee, I'll take that as a yes!

: *chuckle* Thank you.

: Hope it wasn't too cramped in there...

: It wasn't too bad. Nothing I couldn't handle.

Wednesday, June 20

: Oh? You're displaying it in the hallway?

: Yup!

: Oh wow, that looks really cool.

: I knew you'd be the perfect person to cast!

: Heh, I'm pretty honored to be a part of it.

Perfect Goon comes closer and closer. We've nearly hit Adequate Goon!

The next day, we run into an older event but we chose a fairly different option this time...

To recap, Aya was yelling at Rena about the idea of a haunted house for the culture festival.

: It's a stupid idea.

:sigh:

: It is NOT! It is NOT a stupid idea, Goon!

: Haha, he thinks it is! I told you that nobody liked your dumb idea.

: B... but... that's not true. Someone's got to, right? Someone's got to like my ideas. My idea's aren't terrible...

: Calm down, Rena.

:smith:

: Don't wait up for me, you two, I'm leaving!

: Finally, she might get the point... thanks for helping pound it in, Goon. Pfft, she's such a a wuss sometimes. Maybe I should tell Hiroshi my idea... heehee...

We call up Aya for a chat after this.

: Oh, it's you.

Game: She sounds... angry.

: Is something wrong?

: "Is something wrong?" Of course something's wrong! Can't you tell by my voice?!

: Well... yeah.

: My little brothers smeared cheese all over my sheets!

: ...What?

: You heard me! It's disgusting!

: That IS pretty gross...

: Sorry to hear that...

: Grr, it's always my fault...

: It's okay. You didn't do anything wrong.

: Sometimes it's so annoying having all of these siblings.

Huh, I never realised Aya had older siblings.

: Wow, that's a lot of responsibility.

: I know! And I always get yelled at for being too loud and waking them up or watching too much TV or yelling at them when they do something wrong...

: Yeah, that sounds tough...

: Maybe you can ask for a day off?

: Hey, that's a brilliant idea!

: That way you can get your fair share of peace and quiet.

: Ugh, I just heard a crash. I'd better go see what this is...

: Alright, talk to you later.

I feel like the detail about having older siblings should've been somewhere that wasn't this easily missable.

this is how she repays our support.

shameful.

Friday, June 30

Same old scene, it just go slightly different this time.

: I don't want to deal with your crazy girly flower ideas.

: Girly? I'll have you know it was Goon's idea!

Game: Hiroshi gives you a subtle frown.

: What's wrong?

: Alie says you came up with this ikebana idea.

: He did.

: And now I have her and Kiku on me about it. Even Yui is. It's totally weird. Yui usually doesn't talk to anyone, and even she's stalking me to talk about how she loves your ideas.

: We could get her to leave you alone by just agreeing.

Game: He pauses for a moment.

I wonder why it took until our 4th loop to get that XP. Anyway, they call over Kiku and the event goes back to normal here.

Monday, July 3

In for a penny, in for a pound, I suppose. We help her.

: Hmm...

: Hey Aya, what are you doing?

: OUT OF MY WAY!

: What was it?

: A mailing envelope. It has something in it I'm supposed to mail today and I kinda... lost it, I think. I had it a minute ago, I SWEAR! These things ALWAYS happen to me! And don't you dare pull a Kiku and say I'm just irresponsible...

: I see.

: Of course I will.

: Great! Let's do it.

Game: You help Aya scour the school, but to no avail. The letter is nowhere to be found. Finally, you convince her to take a break.

: This SUCKS! Why doesn't anything every work out for me? I try and I try but things like this just keep happening...

: Hey, Aya, calm down. We'll fine it... It's- hey, what's that?

: ...It was there all along? Well, just GREAT!

: Don't worry, I do stuff like that all the time.

: Oh, you do not.

: Sure I do. Everybody does, it's just most people don't admit it.

: Heehee.

: And hey, you have the letter now, and you can mail it.

Not sure I've actually seen this scene before.

Anyway, Goon goes to talk to some girls since I'm half wondering if we'd be doing better with a higher Popularity stat.

: Oh... I can't find something I was tinkering with earlier today.

: Really? What is it?

: It's a metal detector, only I changed this one to detect organic materials.

: Why?

: Did you leave it turned on?

: Possibly, why do you ask?

Well, that's not going to work.

: Hey! That's a good idea!

: So you're going to try it?

I guess calls don't change based on endings seen.

: Good luck!

: I don't need good luck when I have logic!

: *chuckle* Really, you are quite smart.

: Thank you, you're so nice!

: So should I leave you alone now, so that you can look for it?

: Yep, if you don't mind!

: Alright, let me know if you find it.

: I will!

There's no real reason for me to do this call, I just felt like it. I don't need a reason to be nice to people.

Unless it's Aya.

kiku is a maybe

Went fishing for something at the Theatre, nada. Oh well, just a weekend.

Forgot to show these earlier but we're doing fine here.

I've been getting sloppy with stamina management and I'm not really sure why.

Might be a bit of a problem if we go for a harder route though.

They clearly designed Aya as the first route but Rena seems to be way more people's first ending.

Oh yeah, a call, whatever.

: Oh, hey. What's up?

: Not too much. How are you?

: Watching the "Hottest Male Celebrities" special on TV...

: Ah...

: Man, why can't all guys have rock-solid abs like the guys in movies?

abs are hard, man, i've only started putting on muscles on my arms

: I guess not everyone has that much time to dedicate to working out...

: Well, maybe one day I'll look like that...

: Heh, if you do, make sure you give me a call!

: Heh, will do!

: Oh well, I guess I can always dream of a hot guy...

: Hey, there are a lot of good looking guys around who aren't celebrities.

: Yeah, but being the girlfriend of a hot celeb would be so exciting! I can just see myself on the red carpet now in a beautiful pink satin dress...

Man, sometimes she's spacier than Rena...

: It just sounds too good to be true...

: Heh, I guess that's what daydreams are for...

Goon giving off some powerful printer goon energy here.

: Just have to keep your eyes peeled, I guess.

: Heh, I bet Prince Charming is someone who's right in front of me.

: Heh, you never know.

: Ah, the commercials are over. Gotta go!

: Haha, bye.

One day we'll be buff, Goon. Both you and I.

smelling like flowers is fine, this school has no taste

Monday, September 4

: Hey, Yui?

: Oh!

: Sorry, did I scare you?

: No ... I just... did not see you there. I was... thinking about something. It was... Not important.

: You look upset. Is something wrong?

: I seem to have misplaced... my pencil...

: Oh? Do you want to borrow one of mine?

: Oh, thank you... but this one was special. It had a kitty eraser on it...

: Heh, sounds cute. I wonder where it could have gone.

: Me too... I was just sitting at my desk reading.

: Hmm, let's have a look around.

: It's not a problem.

: Oh, thank you...

Game: You help Yui look around the classroom, but her pencil is nowhere to be found.

: I guess it just disappeared...

Hiroshi's always stealing people's cute things for himself...

Wait, what? This is new to me.

: I bet Hiroshi took it.

: Hehe, that is silly...

: Here, take my pencil in the meantime.

: Oh, thank you...

: No problem.

: You know... lately a lot of my things have been disappearing...

: Oh?

: How strange. I'll help you keep an eye out...

: Oh, thank you.... I... appreciate it.

I'm still surprised by Goon blaming Hiroshi of all people.

truely, the stress of working with Aya is a fearsome thing

Monday, September 11

: Oh, hello...

: Have any more of your things disappeared?

: N-Oh!

Game: A mysterious figure shrouded in black comes and snatches Yui's bow, and is gone in an instant.

: What was that?! It was so strange a-and...!

: Ugh, they're too fast!

Game: You find the cloak on the floor in the hallway and bring it back to Yui.

: They were too fast for me, but they seem to have left their cloak behind.

: Oh, I see...

: Maybe Suzu and Kazuki can do some kind of weird experiment to see if they can identify who was wearing this cloak.

: Do you think it is possible?

: Sure, there's bound to be some hairs or clothing fibers stuck on or something like that...

Oh, we're working off cop show logic now.

: Oh... then, I hope they can find an answer... I do not know... what they want from me...

The next day, we hit up the next part of this chain.

: Hey, can I help you?

: Heh, I kind of have a weird request.

: Oh?

: Someone has been stealing Yui's things lately. Yesterday during lunch, someone wearing this black cape came and stole the bow right off of her head.

: Hmm, I don't know... it sounds tricky, and I don't know if I want to get caught up in something this weird... Is it really necessary?

: Please? Yui's really scared...

: Well... let's see... hey, Suzu?

: What do you think we could do to see who was wearing this cloak?

I was going to complain about forensics taking forever but then I remember this is a dating sim, not a hard scifi game. Also, Suzu is a science themed wizard.

: Great, thanks.

: There's not a trace of anything on it.

: Are you sure this is the right cloak? Maybe they used it to throw you off.

: No, I'm positive that's the one.

: In that case, I'm completely stumped.

: I don't understand this at all! Even if it was a different cape, there's not even dust particles on it!

: You didn't clean it or anything did you?

: No, it's just as it is when I found it.

: Weird... if I didn't know better, I'd say a ghost was wearing it, or some kind of spell was on it.

: Hmm, that's a good idea. Thanks for all your help.

: No problem!

: I wish we could have figured it out...

Next part of the chain starts the next day too.

I wonder what she's doing.

: Hey, Rena?

: Oh!

: Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.

: No, that's okay... I... was just doing some cleaning... It's such a mess here sometimes. Hahaha!

: Um... are you okay?

: Sure, why wouldn't I be?

: You seem a little frazzled...

: Everything's fine. Teehee!

Game: Yui's bow falls onto the floor as Rena tries to push the stuff away.

; Hey, that's Yui's bow!

: Er...

: It was you who has been taking Yui's stuff lately, isn't it?

: I can explain! I get really weird feelings all the time from Yui... she isn't normal, Goon. She isn't normal at all! How can I explain it... it's like everyone else is a mochi while she's a jellyfish.

: When you wear a cape to get something, it's no longer borrowing. It's called stealing.

: If you wanted to understand Yui better, you could have just started talking to her.

: I know... I'm so sorry. I was going to give everything back! I swear!

: Well, you should do that and then hope she forgives you. Yui is very easily frightened...

And finally, we finish up the chain with one last event.

: For what?

: For everything... this morning, I found a bundle near my locker... it had all of my missing things in it. I did not think I had lost them.

: Oh, I'm glad everything is back.

: Did you find out...?

: Who took your things?

: Let's just say that whoever did it was really sorry.

Didn't see the need to name names here.

: Oh, I see...

Lot of days taken up for one point of XP. But I guess it's topical to get an event showing off Rena's bad side on Aya's route.

Monday, September 25

You broke rule 1. Never speak to someone else in a men's bathroom.

: ...Me?

: There's no one else here.

: Er.., what's up?

: Okay...

: Me and a few other guys challenged another high school to an indoor soccer match, but one of our guys is down with the flu.

: Oh... could you ask the other school to reschedule?

: Of course not.

: Why not?

: I don't go back on my word. If I say we do something on a certain day, it gets done that day.

: Then I guess forfeiting isn't an option.

: Of course it's an option. If you're a pathetic wuss, that is.

Ouch.

Been so long since I had to deal with high school machismo.

Now, of course, I have to deal with adult machismo now. Seems a little less desperate to me.

: Look, I need you to fill in for our missing teammate.

: When is the match?

: Sure, sounds great!

: Heh, I knew I could count on you. I'll see you in the gym after school, then.

: Good, you're here.

: Thought I wouldn't show?

: Nah, I knew you'd come.

You would have pounded me if I didn't...

: Alright men, this is it! We invited them to play, so we can't lose this!

Game: Your team is well-coordinated and wins the game easily.

Thought we had to do this event once to succeed but no, we won anyway. Good.

: Man, we really beat them to a pulp.

: Heh, you're a pretty aggressive player.

: Heh, you have to be. That's the only way to win!

These stat checks are starting to feel real easy now.

Monday, October 9

Game: You start to run to class to avoid being late, however, you fail to pay attention to where you're going. You run right into Aya, who is also late. She doesn't fall, but all of her books are scattered from her arms.

: I'm sorry, Aya, let me help.

Game: You stoop down to help her gather her papers and books.

: Thank you so much, I-... oh no...

: What?

: My report, look! Part of the right side is ripped off... wait, here it is... do you have any tape?

: Nope, sorry.

: Let's fix the paper.

No real reason to not do so. I mean, it's not like we're going to get detention or anything.

: Grr, she's just going to think I needed extra time to write or something.

: It's okay. Come on, let's get it fixed.

Game: By the time you get back, class is nearly half-over, and both of you are very late.

: Thanks so much for this. You didn't have to. Now you're in trouble, too.

: It's okay.

Hmm, there's not really a terrible amount of engagement with school in this game. You have stats, you do tests and the culture festival pops but...

Guess it's not really the focus of this game though.

not you too, minion #2

Wednesday, October 25

Maybe I should just go home. Wonder what's for dinner tonight...

...Hmm? What's that on the ground?

1 is the boring option, 3 just feels like it's asking for Kiku/Yui to come in. We take the flower.

Game; As you are standing up again from picking it up, you see Alice and Rena standing before you.

: Hey, Goon.

: I just found it lying around.

No point in giving it to them, we're not looking for their route or even their friends routes.

: Oh... that's a bit weird...

: It is?

: Ooh, maybe some flower fairies dropped it!

: ...I think it might have just been dropped by somebody.

: Fairies are somebodies.

: A HUMAN somebody, silly.

: ...Oh...

: Well, whatever. We're going on home, see you later.

Hmm, never seen that one before.

Monday, October 30

Man, Naoko looks annoyed...

: Oh, Lorde! Maybe you know more about this than I do.

: Oh?

: What happened?

: Well, I was scrambling around the kitchen as usual, and I guess I haphazardly left my phone sitting on a spoon instead of putting it on the windowsill like I normally do when I cook... So my brilliant brother Kazuki sees it and decides that it would be funny to catapult my phone.

: Uh-oh...

: Straight into my banana flambe! Thank God I have quick reflexes.... it almost exploded in my face!

: Whoa, that sounds pretty dangerous.

: Yeah!

: So what do you need help with?

Oh, so that's what this was about.

Game: Naoko hands you her phone.

: Hmm...

: I'm so bad with these things... you'd never know I was Kazuki's sister!

My phones have never shown the number on my sim cards. I've had to have people tell me my number...

: It can be kind of complicated... oh, here we go.

: Ah, that's it! Hmm, let me write it down for you, since you've been so helpful... If you ever need a snack, just give me a call!

: Sounds good.

I really wish there was a way to tell which phone numbers you'd picked up on the current run.

I uh, probably should've split that up into two updates. Oh well, too late now.

Hey, a Shira Oka update! I was wondering when another one of these was going to come out. I was reading this for quite a while back when I was still just lurking, glad to see I got a chance to chime in on the thread. I don't know why I find this game so interesting, but I do.

Needless to say, I enjoy this LP quite a bit.

But in all seriousness, that was kind of out of the blue. I don't think he's ever been mentioned stealing anything before, That and Aya's sudden older siblings made this an update relatively full of surprises, I guess.

Hi, sorry about the delays between updates.

I'd been a little busy between starting a new job and setting up a new PC (the parts took a god drat month to arrive and I'm mad about that) after my old desktop finally started getting a little too old. Between that and the whole forums drama putting me off, I'd been pushing this back for a while.

Anyway, with my job sorted out and my new PC built and running, I should be in the clear to update again. I've actually got a small update like half done but that'll be coming later, not tonight.

Neat, I've been looking forward to another update on this. It's not a good game by any means, but it has this awkward sort of charm as result of all of the jank and it not being for sale anymore.

I'm sure it's better to read than it is to play, though. I'd imagine that charm would disappear if I had a chance to play it for an extended period of time.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

You can see the germs of a good game under all the jank, just it really needs a lot of QoL improvements to make the looping mechanic less tedious to actually play through.

It was also in dire need of better artwork. A lot of the stuff looks like it was placeholder art in many places.

I guess since I've played early Hanako Games (which had some pretty bad art) I don't see it as quite as needed, especially for an indie game.

Yeah, for me art's not nearly as important as the gameplay/narrative. I know the stuff for this game was done by volunteers and it's safe to say I can't freehand draw much better, so I'm not that bothered by it.

Don't get me wrong, great art design is always good to have, but I don't typically expect indies to have great art. Sales-wise, it probably hurt given how the general market was at the time, but this game was really aimed for a niche market in the first place.

Right, right, we were doing the worst route...

At least these kids still think we’re cool.

We’re cool, right?

Tuesday, November 21

oh no, we’re not

: Uh oh…

: What’s with the “uh-oh”?

: It sounds like you want something.

: Goon-kun! I’m surprised at you! No, I don’t want anything! I just wanted to say hi, that’s all. I never thought you’d be that cynical…

: Sorry…

Geez!

: No one else would give it to me…

: Why didn’t you do it yourself?

: Because there was a four-hour “Funny Furry Friends” marathon last night!

: ...Isn’t that a show for little kids?

: Er… well, my little brother and sister wanted to watch it! Yeah, I was baby-sitting all last night! That’s it!

Real smooth...

Man, I don’t know anyone who actually did this IRL. Not for homework anyway, in class worksheets were always fine.

: You know, you do this an awful lot Aya…

: What?! I do not!

: I’ll help you out this time, but you really need to be more responsible.

The follow up to that happens the next day.

: Hey, what’s up?

: Thanks for the homework! I did great on it!

: Heh, sure… just remember to do it yourself next time, okay?

: Sure, sure…

And part 3 happens after that.

: Hey.

: You know, it was so cool of you to lend me your math homework last time…

: *sigh* You need it again, don’t you?

: Who asked you?! Goon-kun WANTS to give me his homework!

: Well…

: I’m surprised at you, Lorde-san. You’re really just hurting Aya because she’s not learning this material herself.

: You to, Kiku?! What is this, hate on Aya day?!

Not my misspelling.

: Come on Aya, this can’t go on forever. You need to grow up and start doing work yourself.

: Yeah, seriously.

: Why does everyone think I’m so irresponsible?!

: Because you are!

alice is the real hero of this story

: They're right, Aya. This has to stop.

: Grr, this is so not fair!

: Thanks, Lorde-san. That was the right thing to do.

: Yeah, this habit of hers really needs to stop.

Huh, neat.

The stuff for the Christmas Secret Santa comes up. I know what Hiroshi likes, I've gotten him in this a few times before.

Sunday, December 10

Satsuko wants to come with us on our Secret Santa shopping. We've seen the first part before but the event does change based on who you need to buy stuff for.

: Oh, we have to shop for Hiroshi...

Sometimes I wonder if Hiroshi was planned to be different. They talk him up a lot at times like he a huge deal but he looks like a generic visual novel protagonist.

We've got an obvious joke answer and then we've got two real answers. We go with the gift card.

: Is that a gift card, Goon? That's so boring!

: Do you think so?

: Well, I guess it's safe. You can never know what Hiroshi is going to do or think...

Can't wait to get Aya for Secret Santa next run...

no goon, web novels don't count

Not much new is coming up really. I guess it's good that we're skipping through things faster considering we're getting too close to 100 updates but eh...

hell yeah, buff goon

And we make some decent Christmas cards too. We're just bad in Lit this run.

Dumped some XP into Charm. Not sure why now but I guess I wanted Fashion/Popularity to be easier?

Monday, December 25

Skipping ahead again, you know the deal.

: One could say your fate depends on it...

: Well...?

: A gift card, eh?

: Not so fast, Aya.

: Huh?

: What?

: So I applaud you, Lorde. Thanks for the gift.

: Uh, yeah! Good job, Goon!

Alright, after that party ends up pretty much like normal.

Not sure there's much to say about Kasumi here. No changes there.

We hang out with Satsuko for New Year's and I figured it was worth seeing what she had to say.

: I think tonight has gone well...

: Too silly! Not tonight, how do you think tihngs are going in general with life?

: Oh...

Hey, that's pretty much a seal of approval.

: You could be doing better, but you aren't doing badly at all.

: What can I do to improve, then?

: Hmm, let's see...

can't believe satsuko hates hanging out with aya

: I see...

: Don't be afraid of things you've never experienced before. They can open up whole new doors for you!

: I understand...

: Hmm, well, there's always the chance it won't...

: Heh, it was fine. Don't worry about it.

: Are you sure it was helpful?

: I'm positive.

: Oh, then I'm glad...

: Heh...

From there, we jump back to the rest of the scene. Seen that before.

Got about one year left on this cycle, I think?

It's weird seeing us have a Fashion/Popularity stat higher than a school stat.

Anyway, it's a new year. Rena had a good dream, Hiroshi had a bad dream and we had a meh dream.

Somehow Rena still likes us.

Gonna chat with Kazuki a bit. Best to hedge our bets since Aya's been a less than happy with us lately.

: Oh, not much, I guess. Just came back from work.

: Oh, I see. How was work?

: Pretty good. Hiroshi came by today. He wanted to check out the go-karts.

: Oh, he's into that kind of stuff?

: Yeah, he even pointed out a few things that could really make these carts fly.

: That's cool.

:Man, I wish I could be more like him...

: What do you mean?

: Well... everyone loves him and always want to hang out with him and be his friend...

: Well, you'll look worse if you just try to copy him.

: I'm not trying to copy, I just want to be as cool and respected as he is...

Not my mistake. There's a missing "him" there.

: Hmm...

: I guess I'll just have to live with it...

: Well, if you really want to change...

: I kind of do... I mean, I just want more respect. I don't want to be the geeky kid who always get teased...

: That's understandable.

: Well, being respected is important, so it's definitely a good thing to strive for.

: Yeah, I'm trying hard...

: Just don't stand for it when people make fun of you.

: I'll keep that in mind. Just have to keep trying, I guess...

: Yeah. Besides, I think people respect you more than you think.

: You think so?

: Sure. I mean, you're pretty much the authority on anything with wheels or a motor.

: Not many people think that's cool, though.

: Well, it doesn't matter how many people think it's cool. Friends are all about quality, not quantity.

: That's true... well, thanks for listening. I'll talk to you soon.

: Alright, later.

Man, he's more insecure than I remember. Oh well, he's still our bud.

School starts up again.

: Hey, Goon!

whoops, I missed a line at the start when I was taking screenshots

And we all know what this is about by now.

: Kasumi died again, didn't she?

: Yeah...

: I see...

: Are you okay?

: Yeah...

Goon seems super out of it. I'm kind of impressed we're still getting new variants on this scene.

: Let's get out of here and talk about it, again. That seems to be our little tradition. I could use some cheering up today too, I think. Let's go.

: Here we are again, talking about the same, sad story.

: Yeah...

: Why not?

: Sometimes people are in unimaginable pain, Goon. Even after exhausting all of their options for help, sometimes the pain is so great that they don't think it's worth it for them to continue living. Kasumi was likely one of those people, Goon.

: So, what does that mean?

: It means that this was a terrible tragedy, but you also have to look at it from Kasumi's perspective.

: Hmm, I need to think about that.

: I hope this talk helped you a little bit. How about we go to the hot springs? I have a few more things I want to talk to you about. I think we can both do with a little bit of tranquility and relaxation in light of the recent events. Let's go!

Alright, time to get advice on Ay-

...Huh. Well, there you go.

: Oh...?

"He's not the sort to not give up"?

Doesn't that mean he's the sort to give up?

: I won't give up, ever.

: Good. He deserves someone that will be just as loyal to him as he is to his buddies. And on top of that... You should always be honest, and you should give him advice yourself. Don't send someone else to do your job.

That sounds like "raise your popularity". Valid advice for Kazuki's route although we hadn't really planned on it.

: Understand?

: Yeah, I think I do.

She then asks if there's anyone we want advice on and we ask about Aya.

: It's very important to her, because she's so social. She also only likes to be seen with the popular people, so maybe you should work on your image. She also seems to put a lot of thought to sports, so that's something you should keep in mind. that's all I can tell you for now. Be sure to keep what I've told you in mind.

I've always wondered why they give route advice once you're like 2/3rds done with a cycle...

Well, time to become Mr. Popular.

Time to hang out with Kazuki at the movies for a bit.

: Hello, Goon-kun. What's happening?

: Not much. I was wondering, though, would you like to hang out sometime?

: Oh, I see. Where did you want to go?

We just picked a weekend and picked the movies.

Hadn't realised we hadn't done this until I got this XP point.

: Really? Awesome.

: I'll meet you there. Just make sure you're on time!

: I will be.

: As long as you're there, it shouldn't be a problem.

Geez, how hard is it to just end a call?

Saturday, February 3

Nice, nice.

: Good to see you! I got here ahead of schedule so I decided to wait for you.

: Oh, that's good!

We're still holding up at mediocre fashion. Now that we're getting to the last few exams, we can kind of stop worrying about the stats for tests. We've got a healthy lead on everything except Lit which we're sacking this run.

: What are you thinking?

: How about we go to see one of the new action movies?

: Sure, that sounds nice!

Game: You enter Cinema Shira Oka with Kazuki. You take a moment to find your seats, and spend some time talking before the movie starts. The lights fade and the movie begins. You watch Vicious Glory. It is about a terrorist attack on a large-scale office building. The people who work inside team together though and stop the attack with the help of the bomb squad. Afterwards, you leave the theater.

I have no clue what movie they're meant to be referencing here. It could just be a generic action movie pastiche, I guess.

: And they were all so gracious - even though many of them didn't know there was a problem to begin with.

: Not all people realize there's a problem in their lives...

: Until people try to save them from the squalor.

I have no clue what this is getting at. Goon at the beginning of the game, I guess?

: Of course.

: Then how?

: I don't know how... but if it's to happen, it will.

: I see...

Monday, February 5

: You know, Goon.

: Hey, Satsuko, what are you doing here?

: Is that any way to greet me..?

: Oh... I didn't mean anything by that...

: ...Haha! Gotcha. Don't worry, nobody but you can see me right now! I forgot to tell you something, so I rushed right over.

: Oh?

: It's almost Valentine's Day.

: Oh, right.

oh, welp

: Really...?

: Oh, no!

: What?!

: None of the girls like you! We're such failures!

: How does it make YOU a failure...?

: ...Ah... Well... It is partially my fault...

: Gee... thanks.

: Well, it's alright, I guess. I have a feeling that even if none of the girls like you, you still have friends.

: Just no girlfriend, huh?

: Right on!

: Great...

: Just you watch.

Man, I feel like it's been ages since I've cared about Valentines. Chocolate doesn't even go cheap anymore, they keep up the prices for Easter.

hello yes, be impressed by basic math skills

Anyway, we're calling up Aya to see if we can get some Valentine's chocolate.

: Oh, hey!

: What's up?

: I think I need a raise in my allowance...

: Do you want to buy something?

: Yeah, I need to get a gift for my grandma for her birthday...

: I'm sure your parents wouldn't have a problem lending you money for something like that...

: Well, it seems a little harsh that they wouldn't help you out even for your grandma...

: I know! The nerve of them!

: I guess you'll have to make do...

: I don't know what I'm going to do...

: Maybe you can make your grandma something?

: Make her something?

: Sure. Don't they say that the best gifts come from the heart or something like that?

: Well, I'd keep it in mind. At least you wouldn't need much money to make her something.

: Eh, presents from the store are so much better.

: I guess...

: Well, I'd better go brainstorm a plan of action...

: Okay.

: She's my grandma, and she'll still love me even if I can't give her anything, right?

: Right.

I swear, Aya gets worse every time we talk to her.

I have no clue if we've seen this or not. I'm still putting off going through the LP and checking what scenes we've already seen. I'd just recommend skipping ahead a little bit if we have.

: You know, it's been really great hanging out with you. I think my mentality has started to change.

: What do you mean?

: Well, I know sometimes I get too wrapped up in thinking about popularity and how few friends I have... Naoko always tells me friends are like food, "quality over quantity", but I never really listened.

: I'd rather have two great friends rather than a lot of acquaintances, you know?

: Sure.

: I guess high school isn't as scary as I thought it would be.

Wednesday, February 14

: Geez, Goon.

: What...?

: You're almost done with high school and you don't have a girlfriend yet? What's with that?

: Wow... you could be a little more supportive...

: It's so depressing though.

: Why...? It's not that bad.

: Because! I mean...

: It was?

: Unless you WANT to live all alone and worthless!

get 'em, Goon!

one of us, one of us

: Well, no, but... don't you think you should at least try to make some really good friends... And try to help them out in life?

: I... I guess so.

: I've... failed you. I'm sorry, Goon...

: Hey, calm down. You didn't fail anyone.

: ...If you say so, Goon, if you say so...

We have friends, so it's a little annoying to see this.

Sunday, March 4

: What?

: It's that time of year again!

: What time?

: Again? Honestly, Goon. It's almost White Day!

: Oh yeah, White Day.

: Time to go present shopping again.

: Except that I didn't get a present for Valentine's day...

: Really? I guess you didn't... Well... don't worry about it too much, then... no need to try.

There's been nothing going on other than Satsuko yelling at us not having a girlfriend. We're just... working on popularity.

Because the game said it helps us out with Aya and Kazuki and I have no better ideas.

Wednesday, March 14

: ...I know.

: This is an atrocity...

: I'm sorry...

: No... no, you're not sorry! I am! It's all my fault! Mine!

: Calm down, Satsuko...

: Don't you see? If... if you don't then...

We can still probably get an ending from here. We just keep pissing off Aya accidentally which is a bit annoying...

Oh yeah, exams. This'll do for a stopping point, we have some dates coming up. This update took me a really long time to write up for some reason despite it only being of middling length.

Righto, righto, we had a date to get to.

: ...I knew I was early, but she should have been here by now...

: Yo!

: Calm down, I'm not mad.

: Wow, you're looking super... normal.

Meh, neutral fashion still. At least we aren't getting laughed at.

Skipping ahead a little.

We chose a sci-fi movie because we know Aya's into sci-fi and anime and poo poo.

Game: You enter Cinema Shira Oka with Aya. You take a moment to find your seats, and spend some time talking before the movie starts.

drat, someone got their fanfiction turned into a movie

Game: It is about a magician named Larry who is told to protect his planet. He seeks out a magical ring to help him do it. He is cursed though and has to overcome the curse to save his people. Afterwards, you leave the theatre.

: I love that series. Have you ever read the books?

: Nope, are they any good?

: They're fantastic! I'll lend them to you sometime.

: That would be awesome!

: They really did a good job with the movie. Usually I like the books better, but this I think I like them both the same.

i can't believe our official characterisation for goon is "Not!Harry Potter fan" and "i liked the book better than the movie"

: The scenery was so beautiful... do you know where it was shot?

: No, but it really was someplace gorgeous.

: I thought Larry Dotter was an excellent character!

how long are we going to be talking about harry potter

: Yeah, you really feel bad that such a good guy has to go through so many trials.

: I know! I wanted to jump through the screen and help him myself!

Is this a Lord of the Rings thing? Never read the book.

: Absolutely, friends are the most important thing.

: Yeah, I always go to my friends when I need help. They always have my back.

: It made me really sad to see Larry's friends struggle with him... you could tell that they really wanted to save him, but he was so under the curse that he couldn't control himself!

: They helped him snap out of it just in time, though.

: Yeah... without them, he might have been lost forever!

of course we'd end up talking about harry potter for too long with aya of all people

Kiku apparently doesn't approve of our love of Larry Dotter. She's good.

It's okay, Goon will soon learn to stop talking about Larry Dotter.

Since I haven't had enough text, I decided to head out to the beach and see what happened.

We haven't seen too many of Naoko's events off the top of my head. Of course, this LP has been running for years now so I've probably forgotten by now...

: Oh, hey, Naoko!

: Today's such a lovely day, isn't it?

: Yeah, the sky's really clear.

: Yes, that's why I came to the beach. I thought I'd take a nice walk or something.

Not sure we've seen this. Also not sure if it's worth showing off.

: So how are you today?

: I'm doing just fine.

: Lemme guess... you bought us some delicious food today!

: It was just a lucky guess.

: Well... I am suppose I AM known for liking to cook. Maybe it's not that surprising. Then there's also this big picnic basket I'm carrying...

: Yeah, that too. So what's in the basket?

: I'm sure I will.

: Hehe, if only Kazuki had your attitude about the food I cook for him. Ah well. Maybe that's just how siblings are.

: Yeah... so where do you want to set up?

: Come on, I know a secluded place that would be nice for fishing, I think.

: Okay, sounds great.

: This place is kinda special to me. Kazuki and I used to come over here all the time when we were little.

: I thought you two traveled around a lot as kids?

: We did. But we are from here, and so when we weren't traveling we came by here all the time. We would play all sorts of games in there, and we made it into our secret clubhouse.

: Sounds great.

: And we'd play tag... And have picnics and read books together.

: Wow, that sounds fun.

: I love Kazuki so much. I don't know what I'd do without him.

: I know. He's a really great guy- I can't see how you can dislike him.

: I know. He means so much to me. It's just that he doesn't seem to get along well with the other boys. He has such a hard time making friends.

: Traveling around all the time probably didn't help.

: No... it didn't.

: And... He's a little bit bitter sometimes, needlessly.

: Some people are just like that.

: Just give him a little time.

: What do you mean, give him time?

: He'll make friends. If you give him enough time he'll find some.

: I... suppose. It's just... I don't know. I want so much for him that I push him too hard, I think. I think I might be trying to make up for mom not being around so much.

: It's alright. You love him, that's natural. But he'll make friends. He's got Suzu, for instance.

: ...I suppose you're right. I can't do everything for him. I'll just let him go and see what happens, I guess.

Game: After a short walk, the two of you arrive at the entrance of a small cove with rocks and water below.

Hoo boy, this is gonna be a long one.

: Well, here we are! What do you think?

: Looks like a nice place.

: So the fish will all be swimming among these rocks, won't they?

: Yes, that's right.

: Hmm... It's a little colder here without the sunlight, isn't it?

: Yes, it is.

: Would you like to borrow my sweater?

: Hehe, Naoko... you're always so on top of things. Only you would cause a date where the man borrows the clothes of the woman.

Really living up to that old school goon reputation, Goon.

: O-oh, is... is that so? I didn't mean to embarrass you. I am sorry.

: Haha. I'm only teasing you, Naoko. Thank you for the kind offer.

: Oh, you were only kidding with me.

Jeez, this writing is bad here. Super redundant. It's especially notable now that I have to transcribe this stuff.

: Here, we should probably start getting our bait ready.

: Ah, alright...

: Don't worry, I'll take care of everything.

Game: You lay out the supplies, bait a hook for each of you, and sit down next to her.

Wait, we know how to fish?

: How long have we been here, an hour? I think I'm starting to relax into this.

: Oh, yeah?

: Yes. It's very peaceful. I wonder why I like it...?

: You don't have to be THAT surprised!

: Haha. I'm sorry, that sounded bad. I didn't mean it that way. What I meant is, at first I was disappointed at how long it took to catch anything. But then, when I accepted this, I felt myself relax. Now I am really enjoying myself.

: You seem to have a natural disposition for fishing.

: Hmm, I wonder why...

: Maybe you'll get lucky soon, too.

Man, there's been a lot of fishing in games recently. It's nice to not have a fishing minigame once in a while too.

: Haha. I don't know, are fish peaceful.

: Maybe they aren't, but they just prefer peaceful fishermen?

: You like such a nice image, don't you Naoko?

: Yes, I suppose so. That's just my nature. Oh, I am getting impatient.

: This is the time to catch your second wind.

: Second wind?

Oh no, I can't help but see the "Metal Gear?" thing in that.

: If you can find a way to relax, time will begin to slide by. Then there will be no struggle.

: You sound like you're reciting a koan or haiku! I will try to relax, though.

I doubt our Goon would know what either of those are. Or at least a koan, anyway.

Game: Time passes...

: I am definitely getting the hang of this.

: I'm glad.

: I feel like I could wait forever. It isn't quite like being alone and thinking, though.

: Yes, it's a more empty feeling than that... but in a good way.

: Hehe, yes, I agree. Somehow I don't even feel the need to talk in order to fill the silence.

Game: The minutes drift by as evening approaches, with nothing but the sound of your lines casting and re-casting into the peaceful water.

?

: No, haha. I don't mean that kind of romantic. Just... romanticizing my life, you know? I like to think about the future.

: What do you think about, Naoko?

: I'm embarrassed to have brought it up, actually...

Game: She suddenly looks a bit shy. How unlike her!

: I love being at home. But sometimes I think about going away. Leaving again, for overseas.

: Really? Why?

: I finally see all my old friends, from all the other countries... I get to see that they are okay, and cook for them.

: That does sound good.

: And they'll each give their recipes to me, and I'll know how to make a dish from everywhere in the world. Not for a cookbook, not to try and make money or a career, or anything, neceessarily... just to have those recipes- one from everywhere... Well, what do you think?

: Naoko, I hope that I'll get to taste all the amazing food you'll discover one day.

Picked the top option because after all that talk of wanting to cook for others, saying "yeah, I'm down to eat food" seemed like a decent idea.

Game: She looks so happy, and perhaps a bit relieved, to hear your words.

: And I hope that you get to see all those friends again, someday, as well.

: Thank you, Goon. Just... for listening, that's all.

Game: You nod, and the two of you continue to fish. But it no longer seems silent, with Naoko close by... it feels as if the two of you are communicating without words. Naoko appears completely relaxed. After a while, she turns to you.

: Hmm...

: That's all I wanted to say.

: Oh.

Game: The two of you continue sitting together, simply enjoying the comfortable silence and peaceful surroundings... Time passes... Suddenly, you feel something tugging on your pole!

: Oh, oh, I'm so excited, Goon!

Game: You start reeling it in. It appears to be a trout of decent size. You deftly remove the fish from your hook and put it into the cooler you brought with you.

: I wonder if I'll be able to catch one before it gets dark...

: If I can do it, then so can you.

Game: You re-bait your hook and settle into the silence again. Naoko looks a bit anxious now, as if she's worried she won't catch anything. Time passes...

: *gasp* I got one!

Game: She starts reeling it in quickly. Before you can grab the fish, it flops onto the dirt, gasping for air.

: Oh!

Game: Finally, you are able to grab the fish as it expires. You put it in the cooler and turn to Naoko wordlessly.

: ...

: I'm sorry. I am so sensitive sometimes it is ridiculous! It is always with things like this. I'm sure you think that I am insufferable.

: It's okay, Naoko...

: I feel like there is no way to know what it is right- no way to know whether or not there is something wrong with killing this animal.

: I'm sorry. I don't know what to say.

: That's okay. Perhaps these feelings don't make sense, and I shouldn't express them.

Game: The two of you stand there in silence. Naoko ends it by speaking.

: Well, we caught dinner, didn't we? Let's go up and make a fire.

Game: You and Naoko head somberly up to the beach. You both cheery up again, but slowly. you quickly gather sticks to build a fire, while Naoko cleans the two fish and seasons them with the spices she brought. She then skewers them and grills them over the open fire. when it's done, she hands you a skewer and you both dig in.

: This is the best fish I have ever tasted!

: No, really, there's something about this fish that is just amazing.

: Not to sound boastful, but I think this is pretty good, myself. I don't think it was just how it was cooked, though. There's something special about the fact that we caught the fish ourselves, rather than buying it from a market.

: I definitely agree.

: Well, it's getting dark, so I guess I should start heading back now. Kazuki will be expecting his dinner soon. I had a wonderful time today though, Goon. Fishing was such a peaceful and relaxing activity. Seeing the fish die... well... stressful... but I am glad we did, even if it was uncomfortable.

This is my first time seeing this event too. There's a few more really long dates at the beach...

Might avoid this place for a bit.

Oh, huh. I have no clue what this unlocked.

Well, whatever happens, we still have school again soon.

Alright, so it's been a long rear end time since I've updated. The big reason for the delay was that whole Lowtax and FYAD kerfuffle that had me wondering if I wanted to continue this LP here or move it elsewhere. Or even just end it since it has been 4 years since I started the LP.

For now, I'll be continuing the LP here. I had some mild technical issues with FaceCopy apparently not working any more but that was a quick fix. The other reason the update took ages was, well, it's just a lot of text.

Incidentally, I found some neat little things relating to this game recently. I seem to have stumbled upon the person who did the art for the game. I'm linking this because there's some extra art for this game here.

I also found the soundtrack to the game up on Spotify. It's not available in my country (Australia) but it should be up for the US people.

And finally, I've discovered one last site, one last hold out that actually does sell this game. Of all the place, DLSite's Japanese store has it available for 550 yen. But only on the Japanese site. DLSite in general has a poo poo ton of porn and I'm not sure how to give a safe link so I won't link it here but it's out there and still possible to buy. The fact that this game is now only accessible from a Japanese store is kind of hilarious to me.

Not much time left before we get locked into our route.

: Y'know, I'm really glad I ran into you on your first day of school. I was definitely your first friend, huh? And now look at us, we're closer than ever!

: Yeah, that's true.

: Good thing, too. I've got a lot of friends, but you're one of the best. Thanks for bein' around... let's keeping hanging out, okay? Bye!

That's a good sign. Relationships can decay enough to miss routes so getting something like this well into 3rd year is good.

Naoko's first message also comes up but we've seen that. It's only her first message so there's no real risk of ending up on her route.

School starts up and this time I chose an option I've never picked before in either of my runs.

: Get a desk job and earn a decent living!

: That sound rather dull. There's no way for you to express your creativity that way!

I know I've never gone down this route before because I'm pretty sure I'd remember an option that stupid.

: I could decorate my desk with sexy things.

Hey, I thought it was my best option to try and salvage things...

: Sexy things...?

: Like one coin models and stuff.

: Well, a desk that's properly decorated... er... motivates. So I've heard.

Nah, I don't think that was a crowd pleaser. Oh well, the event goes back to normal now.

there's gotta be something making this event more frequent, I swear I never see the science/math event as much

We get this for hitting 60 popularity for the first time.

Not that much is going on, we're just passing time for the most part. We've done what we need to, the end of a run is usually much easier than the start.

There was a 2 month gap between this and the last time she did this. Maybe we need to appease the literature gods or something...

I figured a quick chat with Aya couldn't hurt.

: Hey, Aya. Are you okay? You sound a bit down.

: Ugh, my parents are mad at me again.

: What's wrong?

: Well, I was out shopping today and I felt like splurging, so I bought a whole bunch of manga...

: How much manga?

: Enough for me to have spent all of the money I had saved up...

: That sounds like a lot...

: Hmm, I guess they should respect that.

: They should! I'm not a little kid anymore!

: Yeah, that's true.

: Well, I'm glad I bought all of this manga. I hadn't bought any in a long time, so I was overdue.

: Well, as long as you enjoy it.

: I mean, what else would I splurge on? Clothes? At least this is somewhat educational!

: How so?

: That's an interesting definition...

: Well, it's true! Reading is educational.

: Heh, I guess you're right...

: Well, I'm going to go enjoy my new purchases.

: Okay, have a good time.

And with that goes anything interesting for a bit.

Exams come and go. It's 8 fails to get a reset and well, that's a little hard right now.

of course it was kiku complaining about our one fail

I misclicked this time around but eh, it's fine.

: Er, what was the question?

: Your mind is much too cluttered, Goon! You should meditate more.

: A...actually, that was a bit confusing.

: I was discussing the things to come. Voices on the wind tell me about it...

: I thought you said... tea.

Teamwork! :yayclod:

And from there, we're back to normal for that.

A skip function or some sort of scheduler would've been nice. Not as nice as a skip button for text, but...

We've got more Fashion than Lit now. Mind you, our Fashion is only average and we haven't really used it in many dates but hey, we're moved on from trash bag chic.

Same old scene but we're not being a dick to Aya this time.

: Kiku will never stop being your friend.

: Yeah... yeah! We need each other- for balance, you know. We're inseparable, like... tofu and miso broth!

: Hehe, there you go.

: Thanks, Goon-kun. I feel a lot better about everything now.

: Good, I'm glad.

: Bye now!

Hmm, we're just about done...

Bingo. We've done about 6 months in one update so you can tell things have been eventful.

THUNDERDOME LOSER 2020
First of all, thank you, OP, for sharing this weird, clunky, wonderful game with the world.

Second, I want to point out that Aya's dialogue shows she has a negative relationship with her parents - when they're not scolding her, they're dumping a bunch of responsibilities onto her. That doesn't excuse her being a bully, but it explains her insecurity and desire for attention. Still, the writers screwed up by putting her bullying of Rena front-and-center. There's nothing quite like bullying for making a character into someone an audience will love to hate.

E: Also I'm pretty sure Aya has an undiagnosed learning disability, probably ADHD or something similar. Again, doesn't excuse her bullying, but it would explain why she's so "flakey" and bad at school.

Well, Kazuki's route it is.

Game: Your head still swarms with the thoughts of the vision you saw.

: Are you?

: I'm ready... I think. It'll be different this time. I won't get made fun of this term. Nobody's going to get a chance.

Does this have anything to do with that vision I saw?

: ...I better take a seat. Class is starting soon, after all.

He does catch a lot of flak, I suppose.

Incidentally, I'll be cutting the giant event symbol for once we start on a route. Time stops meaning as much.

: Yes I did, how about you?

: It was pretty good...

: So what did you do?

: Not too much, really... I worked in the bike shop.

I'd rather not be too mean to the kid with huge confidence issues.

: I see.

: Sounds good to me.

: ...Ah.

: Is something wrong?

: No... nothing.

: You seem a little bothered by something.

: Well... the sports fest is coming up.

: So...?

: SO?

: Well, sports aren't everything.

: Yes, you say that, but a lot of people seem to think they are...

: What do you mean...?

: Well, ah... I... tend to get mocked.

: You could always skip it.

Clearly the coolest option here.

: That'd just make it worse... Trust me on this.

: How would it make things worse?

: Because then they'll just do the same stuff as always.

Game: He fidgets in place and then starts pacing.

: Then they'll accuse me of hiding out so I won't get humiliated.

: Lose-lose situation, huh?

: Sure is...

: What are you going to do then?

: Hmm... you could go and do your best.

: That's all I can hope for, I suppose.

: Yeah...

: Well, I guess I can try...

: Good luck.

: I just hope I don't get totally humiliated this year.

: Who knows?

: It just seems that some people are out to make me miserable.

After that, a week passed before...

Yeah, I was confused too.

: I had other things to do, okay?

It seems I've accidentally failed a route. And I had no clue what I messed up...

: You're always just thinking of yourself! Couldn't you tell that this was important to Kazuki?

Man, he never even asked...

: You're right... I'll go help him.

: Forget it, Goon, it's too late now! Your refusal to help him affected him profoundly. Even his closest friend wasn't willing to help him when he needed it most. How do you think that made him feel?

Oh no.

Yep, that's right. We just got a bullshit reset for failing a route.

: Kazuki felt betrayed by everyone... even Suzu laughed at him. He at least had you to depend on... And even you gave up on him.

: I... didn't mean to.

: It doesn't matter what you meant to do... All that matters is you failed your best friend.

: Geez...

: No, don't give me that! This is your doing for being so insensitive!

: Oh...

Goon here is definitely giving me early game Goon vibes. The guy who hosed up his life and became an alcoholic.

: *sigh* Don't worry. It's Golden Week. Just don't mess up again! Sending you back is tiring work.

Anyway, out of sheer spite, I decided to just load a save and figure out what went wrong. I told myself I'd roll with a reset if I failed to get onto a route but this bullshit?

Nah, I'm just loving reloading.

Anyway, that never happened and welcome to the good timeline.

: Ugh, so boring... how was yours?

: Oh, sorry to hear that. Vacations are never as great as they sound... Mine was pretty good, though.

: So what did you do?

: Not too much, really... I worked in the bike shop.

I was still pretty certain teasing him was not the correct option so I avoided it again.

: I see.

: Sounds good to me.

: ...Ah.

From here on, we follow the same route as above for a little bit until he confides in us about the sports festival and his worries of not doing well.

: Try a bit harder?

: I DO always try hard.

: Well, you could give a little extra push.

: What do you suggest then?

: What do you mean?

Bingo. This is why we failed last time and we never even had the option show up...

: Maybe you can train for it. I could help.

: Really? You would help me train for it?

: Yeah, sure.

: Practice running and things like that.

: I see... Thanks, I think I'll give it a go. I want to be able to at least say I made an effort.

: Sounds good. If you find out the games beforehand, you could practice them.

: Oh, that's a good idea too. Thanks, Goon-kun... I was pretty worried about all this.

...Is Kazuki getting paid for his work or is he just a volunteer? He's like 15 at the start of the game and all...

Anyway, two days pass.

These interstitial frames are actually fairly easy to capture but I just don't bother most of the time. They look kinda jank.

: Of course, what is it?

: Alright, here goes... The sports festival is coming up, and I was hoping... well, I mean... Er, I- I was wondering if you really meant it, when you said you'd help me practice... You know, so that I can be a little more prepared this year.

: Of course I'll help.

: Really? Thanks, Goon-kun! I don't think the gym is being used today after school. Let's meet there to practice, okay?

: Okay, I'll see you there later, then.

We immediately transitioned over, no breaks.

: Let's start with the three-legged race, okay? That's the one I'm the most terrible at.

: Alright.

Game: He brings out a piece of rope from his bag.

: Alright... and we bind our ankles together like this... and then I think we're good to go.

Game: He stands there smiling awkwardly, his left leg bound firmly to your right.

: Ready?

: Yeah. Let's try this slowly... Ahh, this feels so strange. W-wait, wait, I-ahh!

Game: Since your ankle is tethered to his, it ends up being twisted completely out of place.

: No, I think my ankle's twisted.

Guess we're not fighting any zombies this time around.

: Oh no, twisted?! You should go to the nurse! I'm so sorry...

: It's alright... help me walk there...

: Alright...

: It's alright, Kazuki. It was an accident.

: I should just skip the sports festival. It was foolish of me to think I'd do well, even with practice. I never do.

: Come on, don't talk like that.

: If you say so... Are you going to be okay?

: The nurse says it was just a minor sprain, so don't worry.

: I'm due in the shop now, otherwise I'd say here with you. I'm sorry, Goon-kun. I'll never forgive myself for this, ever.

He's taking this rather hard...

Game: Later that night...

: Satsuko? Did I do something wrong?

: Oh, not at all! It was very nice of you to help Kazuki, Goon!

: It's okay. The nurse said it was just a minor sprain.

It's been a while but I'm pretty sure Satsuko was actually pretty incompetent as an angel? I remember something about her screwing up her job as a librarian or something.

: That's good. I'm sure it'll be good as new in no time!

: That's true...

: But the sports festival is next week, isn't it?

We're pretty good at sports so that's a bummer, I guess?

Anyway, a week or so passes.

: Hiroshi? What're you doing here?

I checked back, this didn't happen in last run. I don't think this is a shared event...

: Huh? What do you mean? That's one crappy greeting.

: Well, yeah, but you graduated.

: Rena forgot her lunch. I happened to be home on school holiday, so I brought it to her. Oh, did you hear the news about the sports festival? Since I'm the champion from the previous years, they're letting me compete again this year. You know, to defend my title and all.

: I see...

It must be rough to have peaked in high school.

: You're totally going to lose.

: What?

: Yeah, somebody's going to beat you like crazy.

: Wh... What the hell are you talking about?

: Well, we've all been practising. What have you been doing?

: Looks like you practised too hard, you have a limp! And I was at SCHOOL, of course. You know, studying.

: Well, see, I bet you don't have it anymore.

: Shows what you know.

: Oh...?

: I'll bet you that I'll be the champion again this year, no matter what I have to do.

: No matter what, huh? Are you going to cheat?

: Oh course not. I never cheat. But I won't lose.

: We'll see.

Well, Hiroshi successfully provoked. This can only lead to good things, I'm sure.

: ...

: What's the matter, Naoko?

: Hey, is that Hiroshi?

: Yeah, Hiroshi said he'd be back to defend his title this year.

: Yeah... I'm just worried about Kazuki... He's worried sick about this festival, and you were supposed to be his partner, Goon, but... Well, it's obvious that won't happen now...

: Oh man...

: I just hope he'll be okay...

Well, that came out of nowhere.

: What are you talking about, Aya?

: Heh, what do you know, anyway?

: Well, considering he's the one who got hurt, I'm sure he would know a lot about the matter...

: He's just defending him because he and Kazuki are practically sewn together at the hip! You never see him anymore without that little shrimp right- ....Whoa, did Hiroshi just wave at me? Hold on, you two, I'll be right back! We'll finish talking about this in a second.

Game: Aya dashes off.

: Hiroshi can be... competitive... Maybe even more so today, now that Rena's sick and absent... He won't have to worry about hurting her feelings, so to speak... And I heard...

: Heard what?

: Well, maybe we should wait until Kazuki shows up before I say anything. I just don't want Kazuki to get down on himself.

: He said he'd do the best he could. That's why we were practising.

: Did he? I'm glad to hear that. Maybe his attitude is changing... Or maybe I'm just being a silly over-protective big sister! Anyway, let's all try our best today, okay? That's still something to be proud of... Goon, you can cheer us on from the sidelines.

One fade to black here...

: Hey, Kazuki. It's the big day. Are you ready?

: Ahh... I... don't... I don't know.

: Don't worry about it. Are you okay?

Game: Chewing his lip slowly as if unsure what to say, Kazuki finally sighs and explains.

: Well, I practised and everything... But I still don't think I'll do too well.

: That was just an unusual accident.

: But if things like that happen just when I'm practising, then I can't help but wonder...

: It's okay, Kazuki, it'll go better today.

: I just have a sinking feel about all of this.

Hmm, that looks like a wrong word there. It's in the vanilla script so eh.

: Yo, Goon. Hey, Kazuki.

: Hiroshi? What're you doing here?

: Heh, they invited me back hack this year so I can defend my title. Anyway, I heard you needed a partner for the three-legged race, since Goon here's all gimpy. So I graciously volunteered to the race staff to be your partner.

Uh-oh...

: Come on, I'm doing you a huge favor here. Show a little gratitude, man. When we win, you'll gain so many followers you won't know what to do with yourself.

: Kazuki, just try your best.

: I already told you, Goon. I intend to win. You got that, Kazuki?

: Um... okay... *gulp*

: Just follow my lead out there, and we'll be fine. I never lose.

Time for Kazuki to carry Hiroshi to victory.

Come on, Kazuki! You're falling behind...

Announcer: And he's doing it! Hiroshi's sprint to the finish line has won him the event!

I hope Kazuki doesn't take it too badly...

He took it badly.

: I'm so... ARGH!

: I think everybody did...

: Hey, great job there, Kazuki, we won!

: Yeah, you should be more sensitive, Hiroshi...

: Well, we DID win, right? What's the big deal?

: That was pretty awful of you, Hiroshi.

: Aww, you'll get over it. Give it some time, and you'll find it just as funny as the rest of us.

Game: Hiroshi chuckles to himself, seeming quite pleased.

: Hiroshi...

: ...You're just not getting it.

: Whatever. Well, I gotta go. See you guys later.

: Forget about it, Kazuki. It's not so bad.

: Not so BAD? Goon-kun, he picked me up!

: Just calm down...

: Suzu was laughing... Kiku too... I just... I just can't handle this...!

: Don't worry, everyone will forget about it soon enough.

: Do you think so...?

: Yeah, in a few days, nobody's going to remember this.

: I'm not so sure, Goon-kun.

: Come one, think positive.

: *sigh* I guess.

: Before you know it, nobody will remember this.

: But... they remember everything.

Man, these are not... great responses.

: Just ignore them.

: You don't know what it's like to be me.

: Oh...

: I... think I'm going to the nurse's. I don't feel so well.

Game: He walks away sadly.

Good tidings.

It's been like 3 months since the last update, sorry about that. I lost my job 2 months back and I lost any semblance of schedule I had with it. I've sort of pulled myself together but man, I miss being able to split my day into work and not work. Hopefully I can get an update done in January and we don't need to wait for 2022 for me to finish this route.
