It might be worth cutting our losses and going with Rena yea
While 'cutting our losses' implies hanging out with Rena is a bad thing.

Yeah, let's go for the ending we're sure to be on track for. Having Meditate the whole run from here will make the other ones easier after all :pseudo:

Hmm. On the one hand, I'd like to see you try for Yui because the two endings I saw on my own were Suzu and Rena, but if you think it'll be difficult it might be better to go for Rena now and wait to try for Yui later. Yeah, I'll just vote for Rena, this game gets repetitive enough without making you try for something that's likely to fail. Besides, if I remember right, finishing Rena's route gives you a bonus for future routes which will make things a bit easier.

Always cut your losses. You'll get so much XP from a successful run that it's a lot better. Rena is super cute too. It's win/win!

Crazy to think the LP's been going for over 2 years now. And I've only done 2 routes so far.

Aah, Meditation. It doesn't do as much as I remember it doing, but it's still an improvement.

Arguments about the culture festival...

An event about voodoo, I'm pretty sure we've seen...

We've seen this too. But last time, we didn't chat to Rena, so let's do that. We'd just finished an informal class test.

: Hi!

: Hi, Rena. What'd you think of the test?

: I liked it a lot. It made me rethink some of the things we read recently.

: Oh, really?

Only time I had that happen was when I studied Animal Farm and the Russian revolution at the same time. It's an interesting way to learn things.

Alice invites us to join the swim club, we were a towel boy last year.

yes, yes, whatever aya

Monday, July 12

Oh, no!

: This is...?

: Yui!

: Aah! ...Hello, Lorde. Did you... write this poem?

too many god drat ellipses...

: Uh, yes I did.

: Heehee, it is... really pretty.

: Do you really think so?

: Indeed. It makes me... happy.

Only poem I can really remember enjoying was one about the Bengali Liberation War from the perspective of a Pakistani soldier. It was interesting, definitely not pretty.

: Sure, if it makes you happy.

Why do Goon's options always get weird when Yui's around?

Nice to get all this Yui stuff, but we're already going to Rena's route.

Spoilers: She "grows" four toes.

I could probably skip some of these things. They're fixed things that happen at predetermined times per loop but if I got rid of them, I'd have nowhere to stick idle commentary.

We organise a day out to the park. We're not totally on top of things but as long as people like us and we're not failing, we have nothing to worry about.

The artist's style works really well for this chibi stuff.

Another fixed event. We like the haunted house!

Sunday, June 25

Oh, well, beats running into Aya or something.

Usual greetings, sass towards garbage bag chic and all. We head off to the duck pond.

I'm... not sure if we've seen this or not? Well, it's duck content, I'll err on the side of caution and leave it in.

: There are more ducks here than I thought there would be.

: Yes... sometimes a lot of other people come here too. To feed the ducks.

: But today it's just the two of us, isn't it?

: Yes.

: I'm not sure which is better... being alone or in a crowd.

Jeez, none of these options seem great to me...

: Both have problems and advantages.

: What do you mean?

: In a crowd, you always have someone to talk to... but when you're alone, nobody can bother you, right?

: Yes, I suppose that is right.

: Yeah, but sometimes you can be lonely in a crowd, too. Like, there are people everywhere, but none of them care about you, or understand you.

: ...Yes.

: I know what that's like.

Goon seems to have not have had any drinking friends in his miserable days.

Game: Yui nods.

And with that, the usual good bye and we're off.

Day 1 of swim team - we cannot swim.

Monday, July 26

We've seen this event before, so let me just skip ahead to the new bit...

This is the event where Rena gives us her phone number, if you don't remember.

Goon's no genius but he's not dumb enough to pick the other option.

: I know, I know. Worms might start falling on my book, right?

I'm a time-traveller, friend. :smuggo:

: Oh, I always knew you were special! Take my number, I hope we can talk more about this sometime!

: Fine, thanks.

: I guess I'll see you later, then!

Moving on.

We participate in a girly plot to rob Hiroshi of his Vegas themed culture festival.

Saturday, July 1

We've seen this too (probably), but it's short and relevant so I'll keep it in.

: What's so funny?

: Your face! I always become happy whenever I look at it. I just want to smile and laugh like a habby baboon! That's because you're such a good friend to me! Nobody makes me happy like you...

It's good to have friends.

Tests come and go, at the moment we're pretty safe on that front.

Some chat about Rena's family having eel, nothing much here.

Didn't grab a screencap of this at the end, so I'll just tell you we got an A in Literature, D in Math, C in Art and B in Sports.

We decide to call up Rena and chat.

: Hey, what would you do if you saw something weird...?

: Um... what do you mean?

: I was writing on my bed, and I looked up for a second...

: ..and?

: Did you talk to Hiroshi about it?

: No, Hiroshi doesn't understand these things.

: Oh, okay.

: What a mystery...

: Well, what did it look like?

: Hmm. It reminded me of a badger.

: A badger?

: Did you try talking to it?

: No, it went away too fast...

: Aww...

: Oh well, I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled if he decides to come back...

: Hahaha, alright.

I'll try and grab some more small chats with people on their respective routes. It's usually a good way to get some free brownie points with people and if I'm going to start skipping over everything, I need something to flesh these updates out.

Wednesday, July 19

: Hmm? On what?

: On doing well on your literature examination.

: Oh... you found out about that?

: Oh, yes. Everyone pays attention to those things. Word travels fast in such a small school.

Difficult choice.

: Of course.

What a thrilling conversation. Overly serious Kiku is not good Kiku.

Semester's over, let's go hit on some strangers.

You may have noticed that update lengths have been shrinking. This is mostly because we're skipping stuff. Previously, I've been recording 10-15 minute segments and turning those into a SSLP. Recently I've been taking 20 minute clips and getting only like 40 images out of them. I'll try to increase the length of the recordings and the updates.

But uh first, I should probably update more regularly, huh? Been busy with things in real life.

Oh right, we'll be aiming for Rena's route. I think we're doing well for that now.

Both in body...

And in mind.

Obon comes, taking away 2 free days we could really use.

Wednesday, September 6

Remember when we told Aya we weren't going to help her out with her doujin?

Game: You approach Aya's booth. She sits at it, looking entirely too frustrated. Very few people seem to be around, and a large stack of the comics sits on the table. Many of them are saddle-bound with crooked staples.

: *sigh*

: How's it going, Aya?

: Huh? How is it GOING? How do you THINK it's going, huh? It's going terribly! No thanks to you, too! You wouldn't even help at all! You wouldn't even look at the script! Oh, just get out of my face, Lorde-san. You're blocking the way for all my customers.

My bad fanfiction days are behind me now. No more bad Harry Potter or Ranma 1/2 fanfics for me. Or fanfiction in general.

But you don't have any...

Bye!

After that, we get another Kasumi event that we can't really do anything in.

Wednesday, September 13

: Hey, check this out.

: What?

: This video.

: Hmm...

: I think Kazuki should see it. You know, to broaden his horizon, heh.

: Oh......OH. It's THAT kind of video.

Time to bully Kazuki a little.

: That's cool.

: Hey guys, what's going on?

: Here, take this.

Game: Kazuki takes it and looks in the bag.

: What movie is it? There's no label.

: You'll see. Just watch it tonight when you get home, okay? I have to split. Let me know what you think tomorrow, Kazuki.

Haha.

: Hope you enjoy the video, Kazuki.

And the follow up happens the next day.

: Er... part of it...

: Ugh, you must've chickened out after turning it on.

: No, that's not it...

: Then what was the problem?

: I don't want to talk about it...

: Come on, what's the problem?

: Leave me alone, Hiroshi.

Oh my.

: HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW!

: NO WAY! That's HILARIOUS!

: Not for me! I've never been so embarrassed in my life! And stop laughing at me! I didn't know what was on the tape!

: Hey man, don't blame me!

Subtle.

: Sorry, Kazuki. I should have let you know.

Poor Kazuki.

Friday, September 24

We've seen this event before, there's just some XP we can grab this time. Skipping ahead to the new bit.

Recap: Rena and Kazuki are talking about ghosts and they decide to go check out the graveyard.

: So you want us to help you look for the unmarked grave, right?

Boom, XP.

: How did you know?!

: Indeed...

: Just a hunch...

: Wow. You and I are certainly on the same wavelength, Goon-kun.

: It happens sometimes.

After this, we revert back to the normal event.

Saturday, September 23

Back to the graveyard adventure. Once again, we're skipping ahead because there's a modified part.

We'd found the grave and Rena's shocked to see it in such disrepair. I think we all know whose grave this is.

: Really?

That's about it for new stuff here.

Wednesday, September 27

: Hey, guys! What's up?

: Oh... what brings you here, Suzu?

: I just wanted to check out the greenhouse. What're you doing?

: I come here often to help take care of the plants.

: Why?

: What do you mean, why?

: There's something quite mystical about taking care of another living being.

: Yes... he got it right.

: Like... magic?

: Yes.

: That's exactly it.

: So... um... I'm sorry, I still don't understand.

: ...Wait here a moment.

Brief fade out. I didn't take many pictures for some reason.

: What's she doing...?

Game: Kiku hands Suzu a small plant in a pot.

: Take care of this plant, okay?

: Hey, that's a good idea.

: You want me to raise it? How long does it take?

: Two or three motnhs, I think will do it.

: Well... alright, I'll give a try, guys.

Monday, October 2

: Yeah! Lately I feel like I can really get into these stories.

: Some murder mysteries... kind of frivolous, I know...

all I've been reading is Xianxia books, poorly translated web novels and Fate Grand Order's story, I have no room to talk

: Well, at least you recognise that there is better literature out there. It is still better than Aya, believeing that it is perfectly normal to be obsessing over alien... princess... zombie fantasy-things.

Ouch. Actually I did try reading the Mahabharata but I went for an unabridged text and was turned off by the prose...

More Kasumi sightings. I might just do a summary of all her events when we get closer to her route although they tend to change over the course of the game.

I decided to just chat with Rena for a bit. Small chat is a powerful option and it costs nothing.

: Oh, just finishing up a new story.

: Cool, what's it about?

: Oh, it's about a little girl who helps a fox spirit find something he's lost...

: Is it for school?

: No, I'm just writing it for myself.

: Ah, I see.

: Grr, I just feel so blocked right now...

: Hmm. Tell me what the story is about and I'll try to help you.

: Well, you already told me a little bit about it.

: Yes, but I wouldn't want to say any more about it.

: Alright...

: Writer's block is the worst!

: Do you get it often?

: Every now and then...

: What do you usually do to cure it?

: Take a walk, usually.

: That sounds like a good idea. Why don't you do that?

: Eating something might help. Good food always puts me in a good mood, so maybe it'll do the same for you.

: Hmm, I never thought of that...

: You should give it a try. It might help.

: Alright, I think I'm going to go do that.

: Okay, hope it helps.

: Thanks!

You know what, finishing a story is more than I've done. Writing well is pretty hard, this game certainly tries, it just needed a lot of editing.

And a skip button.

We take Alice to the graveyard. She doesn't even respond to the different response so that's boring.

We get an affection call from Rena.

: Uh... thanks?

: Hiroshi tells me that there's no such thing as a real spicy tuna, but I know there has to be! Otherwise, where does the sushi come from?

:3:

: After all, the only thing that makes me happier than being around you is eating spicy tuna.

: ...

Flattering, isn't it?

Alright, cute stuff over. Time to go solve everyone's problems.

Tuesday, October 17

: Oh, Suzu. What is it?

: Well, I'm not sure if you noticed, but Kazuki is not here today. And I was supposed to get his homework for him.

: Okay, so what's the problem?

: I'm going to be busy in the shop today and I know I can't get it to him... And Naoko already went home and didn't know I needed to see her... so...

: You're asking if I'll do it?

: Sure, I'll do it.

: Alright, thank you! Here it is.

: I'll take it right there.

: Thanks.

: So, Lorde. What brings you by?

: Suzu was busy so she asked me to take Kazuki his homework.

: Oh, alright. He's upstairs. Hold on, sweetie. I'll go get him.

: Thanks.

: Suzu was busy so she asked me to bring your homework instead.

: Oh, alright... thanks. Hey, can I talk to you about something before you go?

: Yeah, what is it?

: Well... er. Um... I'm barely sick at all today. I only stayed home because Naoko made me. Er... she's been babying me like crazy.

: So?

: She just does it because she loves you.

: Do you think so? It's just so irritating!

: Yeah. She really loves you so she wants to take care of you. She does go overboard, but... she cares.

: I guess you're right... thanks for listening.

: Anytime.

That makes for 4 points of XP this update.

Thursday, October 19

: ...

: Naoko, is something wrong?

: Oh dear... it's just that I accidentally broke something, while I was cleanign the living room this morning before school.

: Oh, was it something important?

: Fairly important, yes...

: Can you replace it?

: No, that would be impossible, I'm sure. It was a gift to my mother from somebody we met in India, and it means a lot to her. I just feel so clumsy!

: Ouch.

: Are you absolutely sure it can't be replaced?

: Yes, I'm quite sure! It was hand-made by her friend, I think.

: I see... well, maybe it can be repaired.

: ...Maybe. I did save all the pieces. I may have been clumsy but I am resourceful, heehee!

: Well, there you go. We should see if we'll be able to get it repaired.

: Alright.

: Want to meet at the shopping district sometime soon and give it a shot?

Aand part 2 happens the literal next day.

: Lorde, there you are. I have the vase her in this box.

: Alright, let's head to the glassworks store.

: Oh my... that's the problem, while I was waiting I already went, and...

Game: She opens the box, revealing to you a hopelessly shattered pile of intridcately painted glass shards.

: Ouch.

: You should probably just tell her.

: Yes... you're probably right.

: If it's really that important to her she'd find out eventually, so you might as well just tell her.

: You're right. I'll call her tonight and tell her...

XP 5 for the update and a nicer ending than just giving up. Didn't actually know you could get XP off this event.

Anyway, we've done about 2 months in one update.

The saddest thing about this game is that it'd probably be okay if they added basic QOL stuff like "fast-forwarding through already-seen text"(especially in a game that's about repeating the same few years over and over) and had a few more editing passes on the script. They clearly tried to do a lot as best as they could, they just did too much for their team to handle.

Been nearly two years now and this is update 66. The fact that a 20 min recording turned into only a 50 image update is a sign things have gone for a while.

Somehow, I never noticed I was recording in 1024 x 768 and scaling it down to 864 x 640. No, that's not a 4:3 or a 16:9 screen ratio, I'm not sure what the hell I did there. Anyway, welcome to 800x600 pictures, I haven't really noticed a difference.

Been busy for me lately. I almost forgot we were going for Rena but I still remembered to call her up here.

: Just thinking...

: Hmm?

: I feel like trying something new today...

: Oh, like what?

These are both terrible options. Oh well.

: Heh, having a mid-life crisis?

: No, I'm just bored...

: Ah...

: Hmm...

: Are you sick of drawing and writing?

: No, not really. I'm just feeling spontaneous, you know?

: Well, taking up mechanics would be a change from your normal hobbies. Maybe you should talk to Kazuki?

: Ooh, that's an interesting idea!

: I guess mechanics could be kind of artistic, too, right?

: So are you going to do it?

: On second thought... I don't know if it interests me that much...

: Haha, I see.

: Oh well. I guess I'll go take a nap instead...

: But that's nothing new and exciting!

: Sure it is! My dreams are always new and exciting!

: I don't doubt that...

There's a lot of small chats and I've never seen them all. So if we get to ambigious answers like that, I got no clue.

We invite Rena out to a date at the shopping district a week after exams. Curiously, she was busy the day after exams.

I'm geniunely not sure we've seen this but I think we have? I didn't get any XP anyway.

Monday, November 27

: Hey, what's up?

: Ah, not too much.

: Heh, that's unusual for you.

: Haha yeah, between school and the bike shop I can hardly ever say that...

I would've updated a whole week ago but then I got distracted by Fate Grand Order and Smash

Game: Hiroshi sips a can of soda nonchalantly.

: Yo.

: Hey.

: Hey, Hiroshi.

: You guys will never guess what just happened.

: Uh-oh...

Ugh, another Hiroshi bragging session...

: So I was sitting in calculas- you know, in the advanced class, and my teacher...

: Ugh, this is going to be a long one.

Game: There is a bee sitting on the rim of Hiroshi's soda, but he is too engrossed with his story to notice.

: Eww...

We choose not to point it out. Not sure why, really, just felt like it.

Game: Hiroshi takes a sip of his soda and then spits it out.

: Ow, my throat! What the-

Game: The bee buzzes away angrily.

: I almost just swallowed THAT?! Why didn't you guys say anything?!

There was a choice here, I forget to capture the choice.

: Sorry, we were not really paying attention...

Next day, the event continues on.

: Have you seen Hiroshi recently?

: No, why?

: I heard- Oh, isn't that him over there?

: What? Grr...

Game: His voice sounds strained and garbled, his throat clearly swollen by yesterday's sting. He quickly storms past you, obviously in a bad mood.

Huh. Wouldn't that kill someone normally? I'm not allergic to insects but I can't imagine a allergic sting in your throat would be easy to deal with.

: His voice is a little silly right now, but don't worry! The doctor said he'll be fine by tomorrow.

: I'm sick...

: Aww, you poor thing! Come here and let me feed you lunch.

: Hehe...

Game: Hiroshi sits down to eat with Naoko.

: I'm beginning to think he planned this the whole time...

: No kidding.

: He just wanted Naoko's sympathy...

: Yeah, seriously...

: Me too, I guess...

Not picking fight with Hiroshi, a novel concept for sure.

We got XP, I assume it's new. I shoulda made that checklist back when I remembered this stuff just so I know what we covered. Been nearly 2 years since I started, I remember jack poo poo.

I barely even remember the endings so that'll be fun to see again.

Anyway, we decide to head out to the theatre, just for kicks.

drat, even Minion #2 is judging us.

Options, options...

I first assumed Kazuki's favorite would be Sci-Fi but he gets picky about details. To my knowledge, the best for him is Action. I guess this is kinda like taking someone out to the movies in Tokimeki, except we have way more choice.

: What are you thinking?

: How about we go to seee one of the new action movies?

: Sure, that sounds nice!

Game: You enter Cinema Shira Oka with Nazuki. You take a moment to find your seats, and spend some time talking before the movie starts.

Game: It is about a terrorist attack on a large-scale office building. The people who work inside team together though and stop the attack with the help of the bomb squad. Afterwards, you leave the theater.

I suspect this is a reference to something but I have no clue what. Could be generic too, certainly sounds like a generic enough plot.

: I can't believe they'd saved all those people at the very last minute... it was so exciting.

: And they were all so gracious- even though many of them didn't know there was a problem to begin with.

: Not all people realize there's a problem with their lives...

: Until people try to save them from the squalor.

: Of course.

Weird tangent.

: Then how?

: I don't know how... but if it's to happen, it will.

: I see...

Dev's probably should've picked a different topic to talk about after the movie, that seemed pointless.

Secret Santa comes up, we're buying for Kiku. I don't know what she likes but it doesn't really matter.

We end up shopping for Kiku before I realise and Satsuko doesn't give us any helpful advice.

: Wow, what a gorgeous sweater! Oh, and it's so soft! Goon, this is quite an extravagant gift...

: Is it too much?

: Well, that's for you to decide... Just because Kiku is from a rich family doesn't mean you have to get her something this luxurious, but what girl can resist cashmere...

This is the point I realised I screwed up. Well, it doesn't matter so full steam ahead.

I don't even know what cashmere is, it was just the first option...

aw hell yeah, a chance to show off our sick art skills

We get our exam marks back. A+ in Lit, D in Science, C in Art, B in Sports. Pretty typical but this is our first Lit A+ so we get a point of XP.

Saturday, December 16

Oddly enough, Rena was late. I've got no clue if others being late or early has any effect on the date, I just know you being late is bad.

you know I gotta post all these people making fun of trashbag chic

Predictably, we go to the bookstore.

: Oh, I love bookstores...

: Any reason in particular?

: There's just something so wonderful about books... something warm and strong...

: Ah, I see.

: I feel like I wanted to buy something today... what could it have been... Well, the last book I bought was a fantasy book...

: Fantasy, huh?

: Oh, I just love fantasy books!

: Like dragons and knights and stuff?

: Usually, but fantasy means so much more than that... magic and hope and new and unusual things...

I've been real into wuxia/xianxia lately. And let me tell you, xianxia is some trash.

: Sounds interesting.

: Um... maybe you can show me a good title?

: Sure!

Game: You follow Rena as she walks toward the fantasy section of Suzuki Shoten.

: Hmm...

First option is boring, second option is cold. Third one is clueless, but oh well.

: Uh... I guess I never really thought about it.

: Really? You haven't had a fantasy about anything?

: Er... that's a little vague.

: Like to be a super hero, slay a dragon, save a princess...

: Hmm... saving a princess would be nice. Lady Rena, are you in need of any saving?

: *giggles* Not at the moment...

Sounds like a Lancelot thing to do.

: Heehee!

I love Rena's little figures of speech. They're so odd.

And then we return to people who do not appreciate our sick art skills. I've kinda let Art slack, I focused a bit too much on Lit.

Monday, December 25

: Oh, thank you, Goon. I wonder what it is...

: What do you think?

: Oh, a sweater.

: Whoa, is that cashmere?!

: It is...

: Why aren't you more excited?! I'd die ifI got a cashmere sweater! Goon-kun, this must have cost you a fortune!

: You don't like it...?

: No, it's very nice. I just wish you wouldn't think that I need such an expensive gift.

: Aww come on, Goon-kun must really like you, Kiku!

: I suppose. Thank you very much, Goon.

: Jeez...

Kiku doesn't like getting reminded of the rich kid thing too much and would like to be normal at times. Cashmere being a rich people thing explains why I've never heard of it.

Our free Christmas XP for the loop. I never remember where it is.

Alice calls us up to tell us we're cool.

Game: It is about a terrorist attack on a large-scale office building. The people who work inside team together though and stop the attack with the help of the bomb squad. Afterwards, you leave the theater.

Sounds like a combination of Die Hard and Executive Decision

It's also okay to do the occassional shorter-than-normal update if you know you need to get something out but aren't up to doing a full update. Some content is better than no content.

Cashmere being a rich people thing explains why I've never heard of it.
Cashmere's expensive since it's a type of fine wool. Sweaters made of it are usually ~$130 at their cheapest(dipping to $60-70 if you catch a good sale). I'm not sure I'd call it a rich people thing, but normal people aren't exactly going to have a wardrobe full of it either, and it's definitely out of the price range of most teenagers.

Oh well, I've got a lot more free time. I can try pulling it back up to fortnightly at least.

Alright, how are we doing?

never mind

Suzu comes to show us her rainbow plant and I decide to check out the negative path for this event.

: I like it better plain.

: What? But that's so boring!

: But it's more beautiful because it's natural. This is a bit... too much. What do you think, Kiku?

: I agree with Goon.

Sorry, robot girl.

We're just meeting up with this crew to talk about New Year's but we've got a new variant of this coming up.

: My first dream of the year was about soup...

: Oh?

: Was it eggplant soup? Or hawk soup? Or Mount Fuji soup?

What even is Mount Fuji soup...?

: No, I was just swimming in plain old noodle soup...

: Hmm, well, at least it wasn't a bad dream...

: Oh, having a bad dream as my first dream of the year would have been horrible! I just wish I could figure out if this was more of a bad dream than a good dream...

: Hmm, it doesn't seem to be either.

: Well... nothing is completely neutral, is it?

: I think you'll be fine as long as nothing bad happened to you or anyone else in your dream.

: No, I kind of enjoyed swimming in soup... it was nice and warm!

This is the main difference. Previously, we've just said it was neither good or bad.

: Hmm, that makes sense...

If this game didn't tell you got XP via pop ups, I'd have skipped over so many minor variants of scenes that give you XP.

Beyond that, our dream is pretty normal. Nothing fancy for us this year.

I'm gonna have to remember to hang out with Kasumi more. You get more options to talk to her with each successful loop.

Saturday, January 13

: Hey...

: Goon, you look down today. What's wrong? You know you can tell me anything!

: I couldn't save Kasumi. She died again...

: Oh! I see...

: A bit, I guess...

: Let's go outside and talk again. I really like it when we do that. Besides, it's quite therapeutic. Let's go.

Game: You and Satsuko walk back to the mountain trail to discuss Kasumi's death.

There's never really a need to think about what you say to Satsuko but the 1st sounds like giving up and the last comes off kinda weird.

: I don't really feel anything.

: You don't feel anything at all?

: Not really.

: Because Kasumi was such a difficlt person, I imagine. You also must be a little numb for having to relive this event.

: Yeah...

: That's okay, Goon. It must be so difficult to go through this again and to not be able to stop her. I know you have done incredible things, Goon, and I have no doubt that you will overcome these feelings yet again. For now, just take care of yourself and those around you. Together you will make each other stronger.

: Thanks.

From here, it returns to the usual chat at the hot spring so let's skip ahead a bit...

: She can be so sensitive. She really feels things deeply, and you should show care for her when she's hurting.

: Yeah, that's totally true.

: No, I always get what she's saying.

: Well, that's good then. Rena can use someone who always understands her.

: Everyone could, really.

: Most people can't.

: Just remember that the key to Rena's heart is believing in her and putting as much effort into projects as she does. It really impresses her.

: I'll keep that in mind, Satsuko.

After that, we ask her for some advice with Rena and we just get told "more dates." Easy enough.

Looks like we're doing alright there, just need to do a bit more.

We meet up with Alice at the graveyard again.

: Checking your history book for information on who might be buried here?

: Oh, how did you know?

Thrilling stuff.

Aside from that, this is pretty much normal.

Anyway, I organised a trip to the park with Rena off-screen...

Saturday, January 27

she was not only late, she also criticised our immaculate sense of fashion :(

We just go for a walk through the park.

: Are you here often?

: Hiroshi used to take me here all the time when we were little, but I come here a lot on my own.

: I can see that this would probably be a relaxing place to be.

: Oh, it is! When I'm here, I feel like I can hear the grass growing growing and the trees aging.

: Oh? What does that sound like?

: It's kind of like a low, creaking sound. Like an old door closing.

: Ah...

: Yes, I really do love coming here and being surrounded by all these beautiful trees...

: What do you usually do when you're here?

: Lots of things! I love to sit over here and draw.

: I'm sure this scenery is really nice to paint.

: Oh, I don't usually draw or paint the scenery. At least, not as it is.

: Oh? Then what do you draw?

: Oh, I'll draw a tree as if it were made of giraffe necks or something like that.

: Ah, I see...

: You really have to take a step back sometimes and just understand the basic shape of something. Then you can turn it into something else. Something new and exciting.

should've taken some more pictures instead of transcribing this all

: That's pretty interesting...

: I bet you could come up with something really interesting, too!

: Err, I don't know...

: An upside-down tree?

Probably should've picked the first. It sounds way cooler.

: Hmm, it's a start...

: Well... what if the tree was upside-down and diving into a lake?

: Now you're talking! I think the idea could use some tweaking, but it's on its way!

: Really? Hey, maybe I'm pretty good at this stuff...

: With a little more time, you could be great at coming up with good artistic ideas! Anyway, I should go.

I don't think you can lose points with anyone for saying the wrong thing on a date?

Oh well.

Game: Kiku hands you her bookbag. Then she pulls on a pair of tights under her uniform's skirt and changes her shoes.

: Thanks!

Game: She takes the bag from you.

: You in a hurry or something?

: Yeah. I lost track of time and I'm going to be late for my dance lesson. So I've really got to rush if I need to get in there on time.

: Oh, alright.

: Good-bye! Well...

: Hmm... sure.

: Great! Oh by the way, you like dancing, right? It's one of the things I absolutely LOVE.

: Well, I-

: You're right. I'll wait until you call and then we'll talk.

: I don't have your phone number, though.

: That's right. Give me just a moment.

: I most certainly will. Have fun at your dance lesson.

: I will!

And that's everyone except Yui. Not sure how we're going to get her number but it's pretty much needed for her route considering how hard she is to find.

Anyway, we decide to chat with Kiku.

: Oh... I am just thinking about my horse.

: Your... horse?

: Oh... can you go see her?

: I wish... but not for a while, unfortunately. It is too far, except during a school vacation.

: Oh, that's too bad...

: It is not fair!

: I'm sorry.

Kiku, uh, is a little inconsistently written. You may have picked that up already.

: Well, I never asked to move here. My parents insisted.

: Ouch, that must have been tough.

: It was...

: I'm sorry.

: I'm willing to listen, if you want to talk about it.

: Alright...

: Don't worry. You can always talk to me.

: Alright, if you insist.

: So cheer up. Promise you'll take me riding with you someday?

: Nope, not really.

: Wow, then I have a LOT to teach you! Anyway, I think I should go now, and work on my homework.

: Alright. Bye-bye.

And right after that, I call up Rena. Just wanting to make sure that we've got enough points with her to get onto her route.

: Have you ever worried that you've lost your imagination?

: Hmm... I never really thought about it...

: I always hear that as you get older, it's something you lose...

: I don't think you have to worry about that.

: It's just part of who you are. You can't ever lose it.

Well, you can lose something close enough...

: Hmm...

: If you didn't have your imagination, you wouldn't be Rena anymore.

: I'm sure it sounds like such a stupid thing to worry about.

: Not at all. It's important to you.

: It really is...

: But I wouldn't worry about it too much. You won't have time to imagine things if you worry all the time.

: Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll be fine.

: That sounds like a good idea.

: Great.

: Oh, I think it's time for dinner. Thanks for the talk.

: Okay, talk to you later.

And the next day, we run into her...

Monday, February 5

: Oh, hi, Rena.

: Valentine's Day is coming up again!

: Yeah... I suppose it is.

: There's nothing to "suppose"! It either is or it isn't. And it IS.

: Yeah, you're right about that.

: So, what are you expecting? I was told by someone in a dream that a handsome kitsune prince would whisk me away on Valentine's someday...

: Huh?

: Oh, nothing! Hoping to get lots of chocolates?

: Well, everyone hopes that, I think.

Man, I haven't gotten Valentine's chocolates in years. I mean, I never really pay much attention to it nor do I think people around here pay attention to it.

: I hope you get a lot.

: Why...?

: Because you're nice and I hope the best for you, of course.

: Oh, right.

: So, I hope lots of them come your way.

: Thanks. You're sweet.

: Oh, I am not. I'm just normal.

: Well, you're a good friend, at least.

: I try to be.

: You do a good job of it.

: No, I don't have any plans...

: Oh, I see.

: Why did you ask?

: I was just a little curious, I guess.

: I see...

: Maybe you and I could do something.

: You and I...? Why?

: Because you're nice, silly. And I like you.

: Oh... I see. Alright.

: Valentine's Day is a day to spend with your loved ones and friends, right?

: And which one of those am I...?

: Teehee! You're silly, Goon-chan.

: I am?

: I really like you.

: Thanks.

: I'm gonna take off now, Goon-chan.

: Okay. See ya later, Rena.

that felt really long

i'm already pefect :colbert:

Wednesday, February 7

: Goon, I must admit that when I first met you, I did not have the most favorable impression.

: Oh, really?

: I know it is not right to judge someone just on appearance, but I was afraid that you would be lazy, dull, and unkempt. However, I quickly came to see the opposite. You are quite the charmer, you know. And not in the way Hiroshi is, or thinks he is...

: Thank you...

: I'm quite glad we have become acquianted.

Wasn't really expecting this call or to get her phone number. Kiku's usually a pain to get in touch with.

Anyway, that last call gave us the XP we needed to finish off our traits! We have Ambitious now, I have no clue what that'll do but we're done here. Finally, our XP will be going towards our kind of bad primary stats.

Well, we're still smart, I suppose. But we'll need those other stats if Goon ever wants the leniance to be fashionable.

Wednesday, February 14

she hasn't been kidnapped by the tengu prince yet, I see

we need to prepare to duel him in her ending

: Oh, hi there, Rena. What's going on?

: Not much. Did you remember what today is?

: Valentine's Day, of course.

: Yep! I'm so happy about it, too!

: *chuckle*

: I got you a present, too, by the way!

: Oh, awesome!

: Here you go! I hope you like it.

: What's this...?

: Well, it's a book I made. It's full of drawings.

: Ooh, of what?

: All sorts of things! Lots of tanuki though. And there's all sorts of poems and other stuff I clipped out for you. By all sorts of different writers. They all capture my feelings, I think.

: You went through all that effort for me?

: Of course...

: Wow... thank you, Rena.

: Nothing to it, silly beans! I had to do something special for you, Goon-chan. After all, you deserve it.

: Thank you so much, Rena. This means a lot to me.

Well, that's a relief.

Anyway, we keep up our art skills although our main focus is still Lit.

one of these days, we'll have to do aya's route and that makes me sad

Tuesday, February 27

: Yeah?

: Sure. Let's hear it.

: Do you like Rena?

: Huh? In what sense?

May as well commit to it. We're on her good side, we don't need to stick to Hiroshi's.

: Yes, I do.

: I like her a lot!

: Oh... well, alright then...

: Yeah.

: See, I found this note in one of her schoolbooks.

: ...Oh? It's a love note. What were you doing in her books?

Oh, I remember this.

: It's no big deal.

: ...Clearly you have no idea about these types of things.

:allears:

Argh... this has to be a trick question...

I got the XP so clearly I won.

Since we got a Valentine's day gift, we need to get something in return.

Exams? Who has time for those?

Wednesday, March 14

: Happy White Day to you too, Rena!

: Isn't it so romantic?

: Yeah... it's a great holiday.

: I'm just so excited... it's so, so beautiful...

: Well, it's about to be even better. I got you a present.

Rena, Aya, Suzu in that set, I guess. Will need to take a look at the other sets sometime.

: I got you some books.

: Books?

: I got you some fantasy-romance novels.

: REALLY?

: Five of them. It's a set.

: Wow... I can't believe you'd think of something so considerate!

i can't believe i remembered which set of valentine's gifts had Rena's preferred one

: I know you like to read, and anybody could guess that you like romance.

: I do. I really do... Thank you so much, Goon-chan! I'm never going to forget this...

: Oh, hey, Hiroshi, what are you doing here?

: Just picking up Rena after school... and she told me you got her a great White Day present.

: I tried to, anyway.

: You made her really happy, Lorde-san. And know what that does for you?

: Huh?

Sadly, I don't think it'll be a good strategy for when we do Hiroshi's route.

: Oh. I see.

: Well, thanks for spoiling my little sister.

Well, time to get back to exams.

I uh, feel like I didn't prepare much for these. Although the requirements tend to get more lenient...

We've gained about a single point of Science/Math since last exam and I guess we were borderline failing there prior.

Ah, well. It's too late in the run for that to cause us problems.

: Yeah. I lost track of time and I'm going to be late for my dance lesson. So I've really got to rush if I need to get in there on time.

: Oh, alright.

I am probably the only person who is both bothered by this kind of thing and weird enough to point it out, but I do side-eye the way some VN authors handle female clothing (and I don't remember who wrote this so I don't know if anyone female was involved).

However, in my experience from memories of dance class back when I was in school:

1) You don't wear underwear under dance tights.
2) Tights are kind of a pain to get on. While you could put them on while still wearing a skirt, you would almost certainly have to lift the skirt up out of the way in order to see and adjust the position of the tights correctly.

If Kiku has been wearing a leotard all day under her clothes, then she could pull tights on while only slightly flashing the entire hallway. She would then have to go to her dance class with her tights over her leotard, which would be an embarrassing faux pas. Her whole class will absolutely notice. And then, if she were wearing a leotard all day, why would she not be wearing the tights all day too?

The action I would expect would be to demand that you hold her bag, then disappear into the bathroom with her leotard and tights in hand, then come back out wearing them under her clothes and now holding her underwear (or hiding it in her purse).

On the other hand, this is technically Japan, so maybe they have different tights?

Now that I have talked far too much about underwear I return you to your regularly-scheduled stat-raising.

yeah there's VNs on steam that while technically more proficient, I find much more appalling to look at because the artist was clearly designing with one hand so to speak.

Or have terrible design sense - like Major/Minor where technically the sparkledogs are more technically advanced than Shira Oka's, but the awful color palettes, nonsensical costumes and lack of unity makes them so ugly.

: Hello there, Alice. What's going on?

: I have been checking around for quite a while in the local music shops. I've been completely unable to find anything by Onpunuma Kichirou though.

: Really? Why is that?

: It's apparently long out of print. Public domain now.

: It's so sad to think someone who probably made beautiful music... or at least made music at all... would just fail to exist after a time.

Isn't that sad, zombie Mozart?

: Yes, that's too bad...

: Every artist needs a little recognition, sometimes. I know you're dead, Onpunuma, but don't worry! If you can hear me, know this. I'll find your music someday, and I'll listen to it! I may even get to play it, better than anyone! Even if the rest of Japan wouldn't, at least know that I will. Teehee, that was fun.

Think that's the last of that for this run.

School starts up again.

Getting yelled at for poor stats is kind of annoying most of the time since it eats time you could use to improve but here, it's fine. We're mostly in the clear this run.

Game: The moment Kazuki walks up to you, it's obvious he's a bit taller. It's also equally obvious he's wearing a pair of platform shoes that are increasing his height. Not by much, but enough to be noticeable.

: Oh, hi, Kazuki...

: What's up?

: Not much, wasting time before class. How about you?

: Ere, not much either, I-

: Those are the most awful shoes I've ever seen.

: Uh... what's wrong with them...?

: They look horrid for one, and do you think they're fooling anybody, making you just a TINY bit taller? Come on, Kazuki!

: Lay off him, Aya.

Choosing between Minion #2 and Aya is a trivial choice when nothing's on the line.

: What? Why?

: I think they look rather nice on him, actually.

: You do? But they're hideous.

Checks out with our fashion sense.

: You say that, but I like them. They fit him well.

: ...Shows what you know. Hmph.

: Thank you. They are nice, er, aren't they?

: Yep.

I feel like we used to have official heights. Those have since been lost to the fall of the Shira Oka site though.

These friend animations are the only reason I haven't turned anims off for everything.

We just call up Rena for a chat.

: No.

: Do you want to talk about it?

: Maybe...

: So what's wrong?

: Hiroshi's in a bad mood. Since he goes to a local university, he often comes home on the weekends to visit.

: How could he snap at cookies?!

: I know!

: Man, that's rough...

: Grr, I hate it when he's like this... It makes me so mad!

: I'm sure it's really hard to put up with...

: He really needs to learn to control his temper. He doesn't realize how much it hurts me when he gets angry...

: Have you talked to him?

: I can't talk to him when he's like this!

: I guess you should wait, then...

: Then everything will turn out alright.

: I hope so...

: Hiroshi's a good guy. I'm sure everything will be alright.

: Thanks for listening to me, Goon-chan. I really appreciate it. I'll go see if Hiroshi's calmed down yet.

: Anytime, and good luck.

: Thank you, Goon-chan!

Wonder if that one can only be triggered in 3rd year.

Golden Week comes up. I kinda wish there were some events that happened now, it's kind of a nothing week.

I decide to head out to the theatre on a lark and I ran into Kiku.

Everyone's a critic these days. :(

: How about we go see a drama?

I don't actually know what Kiku likes. Randomly guessed drama, I suppose it worked.

Game: You enter Cinema Shira Oka with Kiku. You take a moment to find your seats, and spend some time talking before the movie starts. The lights fade and the movie begins. You watch Memoirs of an Empress. It is a movie about an empress whose kingdom is being destroyed. Her entire family is lost. However, she stays strong and prevails in the end. Afterwards, you leave the theater.

That was such a generic sounding film, I'm not sure it was even based on a single film.

: Yeah, going on even with a family enslaved.

: Of course she did. Who would abandon their family?

: You'd be shocked.

: Never.

: Never, hmm?

: Never ever.

: Even if they were away and couldn't witness you ignoring them?

: It's betrayal even if they cannot see.

: I see.

Guess that worked out?

This certainly makes me think so.

: Oh Goon-kun, I never expected high school to be so... orchestrated. Everyone is just playing a role they think will gain the favor of others. Take Hiroshi, for example...

: You think so?

: I think part of the reason Aya and I have become such good friends is because she is not afraid to just be herself, without worrying about who is watching. I think you have a very similiar quality. I really like who are you, Goon-kun. I'm glad you are you.

: Oh, thank you...

: I hope we will be able to spend more time together in the future.

I guess we were on good terms with her before, shouldn't be too surprising.

Friday, May 11

Game: One day you head to Kirin Park to have a little bit of alone time.

: Hey, Rena. What's up?

: Oh... I was just thinking of the story of Momotaro. You know, where the elderly couple finds the baby in the peach, that grows up to bring them home riches in thanks for the great life they gave him?

: So why are you thinking about that?

: How interesting.

: I'm glad you think so too! So, Goon-chan, what would you do?

: Do about what?

: What would you do if you found a baby inside a peach?

: Does it have to be a peach?

: I'd raise it with you.

: You're such a kidder...

: Hehe.

Yoink.

Monday, May 14

We go hang out with her since we don't have a reason to not do so.

: Why, hello, Lorde.

: Hello, Naoko. What are you up to?

: Oh, dear. Well, I think that Kazuki and Suzu should get together. They're kind of cute around each other. But the poor dear needs a little push. So I was going to pick up a present for him to give her.

: I see.

3rd options sounds bitter as hell. Maybe I'll give it a shot someday.

: That's a good idea.

: Oh, I'm glad you think so too!

: Help him all you can.

: Thanks for the support. Lots of people think I'm too into helping others. But I don't think there's any way you could help people too much!

: No, that just shows you care, I think.

Not sure I've ever gotten anything out of that event.

Personally, I thought the triangle and squiggles looked better.

: Oh... I was planning to. But it makes me curious.

: About what?

: Well...

: I will be reading as well.

: Will you really? I do like to read.

: I know you do.

: Perhaps we could discuss it sometime.

: Discuss what?

: What we read... of course.

: We could talk it over on the phone.

: Alright... here is my number.

: Thank you. I'll call you sometime.

: I am not sure it will work.

: Work? Huh?

: Nobody has called me in so long

: I... see?

Well, I guess we might as well call her.

And with that, we've gotten every phone number in the game!

Unfortunately, we still have to actually get the phone number in that run we're calling them otherwise the other person will think we're a creepy stalker.

We're just calling her up for a chat.

: Oh... It is you.

: Yeah... is that bad?

: No, not at all. I was just... thinking about some things. And then you called.

: Oh... what were you thinking about?

: I would still like to hear about them.

Getting info from Yui is like getting blood from a stone most of the time.

: Mostly about when I was little.

: Oh... I see.

: It... It... is nothing special.

: Sure it is. Tell me more.

: The problem is... I am having a hard time... remembering a lot of my childhood. It seems so... long ago.

: Don't worry. It will come back to you.

: Are you sure...?

: Yes, just try to relax and don't worry about it so much.

: But... I cannot seem to recall anything.

: I'm sorry.

: No, it is alright. I feel better when I talk about it with you. I will let you go now. Thank you, Goon. You are sweet.

: Bye then.

Bit of a pleasant surprise for this run even if we're pretty much guaranteed to get Rena's route this run.

Tuesday, May 22

drat, we really are popular.

: Goon, I hope... I am not bothering you. I just wanted... the opportunity to tell you... Thank you... for taking the time... to speak with me.

: Oh, sure...

: But... now I enjoy... having a friend... You... have a good heart. Thank you... Good-bye...

Hmm. Pity we're seeing all this close to the end of the loop.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

Calling it now, Yui's our token ghost character.

Alice dealt with zombie possession, suzu was gits, yui has some sorta amnesia (maybe ghostie). I'm curious where kiku goes, since she is all over the place tonally.

I did wonder what Yui's deal was. She's the only one in the game that seems to notice that things aren't quite right. Unfortunately, the lack of text skip and my own impatience made it so I never found out, so I hope to learn through this LP.

I dunno, that seems mundane by this game's metric.
