A White Guy posted:the gently caress is a bob? A shilling Britain didn't even have decimalised currency until the 70s. Before that it was 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shilings to a pound. If you ever wondered why Harry Potter had retarded money, that's why. After decimalisation, people called new 5p coins bobs and old people still sometimes do this just to gently caress with young people, like a 20 year old cashier is going to know what the gently caress a "ten bob piece" is

ElGroucho posted:I like the whole class system thing in Britain Everything you say and do in Britain is a class identifier, from your name to what you call your evening meal and it saturates all British media The central character dynamic in Dad's Army was based around the massive chip on Mainwaring's shoulder at being Wilson's social inferior despite being his Captain in the Home Guard and boss at the bank. Because Mainwaring was lower middle class and Wilson was upper middle class. Keeping up appearances is based around a person trying to act higher born than she is and being embarrassed by her working class sisters. In Harry Potter 2 there's a character called Justin Finch-Fletchley which is the poshest name it's possible to have and he was going to go to Eton which is the worlds poshest school for rich little twats including noted pig fucker David Cameron and he gets attacked by a snake for being a low born garbage person in the wizard world.

Prettz posted:Can you expand a bit more on why? I guess Rupert Poncington-Smythe would be posher. Or Francis Urquhart from the original British House of Cards. In answer to your question: not really. Double-barrel surnames are upper class indicators. Maybe men who married above their station wanted to keep their wives' family "brand"? I did IT for a couple of schools, one a fee-paying private school and the other a specialist school/pseudo-prison for kids from broken homes and you could tell at a glance from the kids' names which was which. No Chantels at the rich school and no Ruperts at the poor one.

Armando Iannucci ruled out any more of The Thick of It because real life politics is so farcical and toxic there is nowhere left for satire to go and the creators of Veep are in an even worse situation

I rewatched a couple episodes of the West Wing recently and it weirded me out seeing a show that portrayed politics as a glamorous place full of honourable people
