So what's the plan if nothing changes or SD gets even more seats?

It could force a center-left government. The Alliance is pretty much breaking up, and the fault line is between the more liberal voters (mainly within L and C who can consider working with S, which is basically a center party at this point) and the conservative ones (mainly withing KD and M, who are comfortable with giving Jimmie a victory if it means ruling).

E: so basically don't expect a re-election until we've seen M crash and burn, and then seen if S can get through a minority coalition of their own, possibly S+MP+C or S+C+L with passive support from V and MP. Both are slim chances as the number of seats are hard to reach, but at the same time a lot of parties are afraid of a re-election.

For example, Bush Thoor talks a tough talk, but dare she take her chances on voting against a center government, and then see if she still has support voters in a re-election (KD famously stays under the 4% threshold between all elections but are pushed up above it by support voters who really prefer another party, but knows that the Alliance is screwed without their seats). I'm pretty sure that V could also let such a coalition through as long as it's led by S.

But really, we're into uncharted territory and everyone's guessing at best. A lot of assumptions are obviously wrong, if even the party leaders (lol Ulf) can't read the tea leaves. So who knows?

She ended up trying to get elected in Lund for the Moderates after publicly badmouthing their current local party leader, and lo and behold, wasn't elected. Oh, and surprise, she's bipolar and got famous for publishing a book about her experiences living with it (which I consider a good thing and I'll still give her credit for), but it kind of also explains why she suddenly fell of a MAGA style cliff which has caused endless rows with her now quite embarrassed University employer as well as previous friends in academia.

It could be M who gets the ball again, but it could be someone else: for example, C has said no to both M and S, so Annie could be asked if she can do it better herself (which I doubt, but hey, it's one option).

EDIT: Comedy Fasc option is that Jimmie gets it, and he forms up the brown-blue wet dream of a SD-KD-M government, with L and C folding and not actively voting against them. Yay!

I'm of two minds with the Arbetsförmedlingen issue.

On one hand, yes: Arbetsförmedlingen needed to change, as it was gradually turned into a New Public Managment nightmare where administrating reasons to control people on the dole became a larger part of their mission, and actually finding available job and matching them with people became a smaller one. This led to a lot of unproductive administrative work that probably could be removed without that much negative effects.

On the other hand, just saying "lol cut down all small town offices and leave it up to private contractors, because they did such a great job with jobcoaching and Fas 3" is not a good solution.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of computer-literate younger people think that Arbetsförmedlingen sucks at doing their job. Myself included, when I had to deal with them. It's because their mission has been, as well, to focus a ton of their time and effort to helping those who are furthest from the job market, while doing very little for the rest. I leave it unsaid whether or not they actually did a good job with those people (for the people I know it's been a mixed bag). But again I think that a better solution would be to tone down the NPM monitoring part of the agency, rather than knee-capping it and hoping that the free market won't use it as a pile of free money (they will).

It one way it doesn't matter.

But in the larger scheme of things it matters in that it follows a current trend with large parties that historically led coalitions being weakened, and you see that in more countries than Sweden. S are also slowly losing votes. With M as weak as they've been lately, they're much less likely to be able to create a consensus for political ideas on the right wing. Compared the current climate to the Alliansen heydays when they basically strongarmed a lot of the parties to only try to influence specific areas that M didn't care as much about. So you'd have Kd pretty much only talk about pensioners, Liberals only talking about education, etc.

M keeps retreating into an area where their competition is either more established (Sd) or more charismatic (EBT being far more popular among populists than the grumpy and uncomfortable Ulf). They're risking becoming more and more irrelevant.

So what's their big political push for the European elections? "Hey here's Tobé saying that we need much fewer immigrants!". Great, the people you're trying to attract already prefer Sd and Kd, and all you're doing is pushing away the few remaining who doesn't agree on leaving traditional M policy in favour of anti-immigrant rhetorics.

Not specifically, but kind of. The part in the law that's specific is a longe break that must be available within five hours of the start of your work day. Basically a lunch break or similar, which means that you can't force someone to work non-stop for eight hours.

The part about short breaks are a bit more vague.

However, that's before taking into account what's written in your kollektivavtal, which in Sweden is where a lot of your actual work enviroment rules are covered.

You can't decide what people do on their breaks. This will never be implemented, it's just empty sabre-rattling to satisfy racist voters. It's from the SD heartland, and clear signal politics. It's not even meant to be implemented, just a way to shout "vote for SD if you hate muslims".

From Unionen:

Rasten räknas inte in i arbetstiden.

Utöver rasterna har du rätt till kortare avbrott från arbetet det vill säga pauser. Då har du inte automatiskt rätt att lämna arbetsplatsen. Pauser räknas in i arbetstiden. Längden på och omfattningen av pauserna är inte reglerat i lagen mer än skyldigheten för arbetsgivaren att organisera arbetet, så att arbetstagaren kan ta de pauser som behövs utöver rasterna."

I don't work in politics, but I work in an organization that is politically directed. It has made it a lot more apparent to me just how often you can't just act on good intentions and ideology. Sometimes the end result of doing what is ideologically pure will have a worse end effect, and sometimes there are barriers constricting your actions that are not obvious to an outsider. It sucks, but it's not always the best way forward to "do the right thing" 100% of the time.

And yes, I'd say that a leader for a political party sometimes needs to act in the way that maximizes long term political influence, rather than what is "the right thing" - if doing "the right thing" means a smaller long term influnce on society. It's a tricky balancing act, comparing the long term effects vs. the short term effects, and I don't envy those who have to make those decisions. Again, the issues that seems so easy and simple as an onlooker are often a lot more complex once you're inside the organization that has to make the decisions.

That said - sometimes politicians just gently caress it all up. But most often there's more to the story.

Nah, it's good to put forward your views, even though it might be more effective to write an e-mail, not send it, go back an hour later and re-read it, and then send it. However, then it's up to the party leadership to weigh all the hundreds of pros and cons against each other.

Think of it like this: if V didn't exist, S would be far further to the center today. And if people on the left half of V didn't complain when V takes the easy way out, V would take the easy way out more often. Complaining has an effect, just not all the time and not always in the short term.

Ullenhag is the worst kind of liberal and is one of the major reasons why SD could grow during the Reinfeldt era. At a certain point during the early 2000s, some of the issues that fed SD could have been avoided.

As for Sabuni, there are some major questions on how she should save L.
1. What politics will she push? And how will those actually differ from M?
2. She will lead a party that is part of the current ruling coalition. Will she continue on that path? I have a hard time seeing that L will give up the opportunity for some actual political influence for the sake of "ideological purity".

IMO, it won't be a massive change from Björklund in terms of actual politics but rather in presentation.
Also, I am kinda curious on the state of Sabunis family gatherings given who her brother is.

Sabuni has a tough position if she's going to try to muscle into a position among the more hard right borgerliga, between M, SD and KD. What's her USP going to be? Basically the liberals are already leaving L for C, and "muslims should integrate more goddammit"-voters have already left for SD or KD, and "I just hate Social democrats"-voters have left for M.

Also, she was pretty mediocre at best as a minister. You can't always tell how good someone will be as a party leader based on that, however. I was tangentally affected by her role as vice minister of education, back when she had a very broad portfolio, and my experience was that she was a pretty single note minister who ignored most of her portfolio and just focused on her own hobby horses. Maybe she's gotten better since then, or maybe she'll bog down into a single issue party leader. We'll see.
