The only real "hint" in the manga is that it keeps being mentioned for a while, so you definitely know it'll be a plot point later on and can assume its another character.

Finally got around to watching most of the anime (currently on episode 12), and I think this is a really good adaption of the manga! Sure it cuts out some of the smaller bits (ex. after the volleyball match where they spot Yoake and Onoya in the comic), but it's pretty well paced and hits all the major plot points. Having the whole volleyball tournament arc take place over the span of two episodes made Kariu's drama much more tolerable to watch versus multiple weeks of waiting for each chapter. She's still one of my favorite characters in the show though because of how much she acts like a real teenager with problems to struggle through.

I do like all the characters in general, actually. Inukai can chill out some more though.

The whole reveal about Kaizaki's senpai and the following funeral episode was really satisfying to watch animated. I think they did a lot more foreshadowing in the anime that helped it pull together nicely - a lot more neckgrabbing, for example. But one of the touches I liked best was in the episode where they talk about Onoya, Yoake, and Kaizaki before the ReLIFE experiment. Specifically, when they show Kaizaki properly resigning from his job and taking the pill on his own initiative. In the manga he just takes it while really drunk and really regrets it, so I liked the fact that they gave another chance to show Kaizaki's character.

also the 90s endings + the watercolor illustrations are the best, so I found a list of all of the songs that play:

”Iijuu★Rider (イ―ジュ-★ライダー)” by Tamio Okuda (ep 1)
”HOT LIMIT” by T.M.Revolution (ep 2)
”タイミング~Timing~” by BLACK BISCUITS (ep 3)
”HONEY” by L’Arc~en~Ciel (ep 4)
”Kore ga Watashi no Ikiru Michi (これが私の生きる道)” by PUFFY (ep 5)
”Sunny Day Sunday” by Sentimental Bus” (ep 6)
”Saudade (サウダージ)” by Porno Graffiti (ep 7)
“Yuki no Hana” (雪の華) by Mika Nakashima (ep 8)
“There will be love there -Ai no Aru Basho-” by The Brilliant Green (ep 9)
“Asu e no Tobira (明日への扉)” by I WiSH (ep 10)
“PIECES OF A DREAM” by CHEMISTRY (ep 11)
“Natsumatsuri (夏祭り)” by Whiteberry (ep 12)
“Button (ボタン)” by PENGUIN RESEARCH (ep 13)

Yeah, the character being so broken was all I needed. Once it was clear that there was a subject 001 and that they were progressing terribly it didn't take much of a deductive leap to figure out who it was.

The scene where Yoake thanks Kaizaki after Hishiro and Kaizaki hear out Honoka and try to help mend the rift between her and Rena makes a lot more sense once you realize Hishiro is Subject 1. Cause it pretty much comes out of nowhere and Kaizaki himself has no clue why he's being thanked. I mean, I suppose you could say Yoake's thanking him for taking the ReLIFE experiment seriously (possible, but doesn't feel like it) or helping two students fix their friendship (seems hella unlikely), but it seems more likely that he's thanking Kaizaki for influencing Hishiro to actually start taking steps to change herself, especially after the failure of her 1st attempt at the project.

Ytlaya

^^^ My interpretation of Yoake's "Thank you" when I read the manga was that he was thankful for Kaizaki being a successful ReLIFE subject, after facing all of the disappointment and sadness of the previous subject (who was also Yoake's first subject, so he probably felt like a huge failure). I could definitely seeing thanking him for his involvement with Hishiro (who is of course the previous subject) also being a part of it, though.

What are you talking about? In the anime he has been out of work for months (so he doesn't have a job to resign from) before he gets approached by Yoake and also takes the pill while drunk.

You're forgetting stuff, he had his convenience store clerk job which he had to resign from, that's why he ended up taking the pill twice.

Yeah, this. I didn't recall that scene happening in the manga at all, so I thought it was a nice touch!

Ah, I'll take your word for it then. I'm assuming this happens later, because it isn't in the first episode. Is there some sort of flashback to the night after he received the pill from Yoake? I only remember him having to retake the pill after visiting the cemetery. Which episode is the scene in?

It's in episode 7.

There is one hint about Subject 001's identity I caught on rereading the manga that seems obvious enough in retrospect I'm surprised it never seemed to come up in speculations before the reveal.

Every character is strongly associated with a color, usually for their word bubbles, but sometimes for other stuff like a relevant character's ReLIFE pill. Kaizaki is blue, Hishiro is green, Yoake orange, Ogha yellow, etc. As early as ch. 25 (before Hishiro and Kariu even became friends), you can see that while Kaizaki's file is appropriately blue, the No. 001 file is green.

I mean, Hishiro probably would have aced the tests even as an actual student too. Kaizaki's an adult too and he's loving failing everything.

Do they ever mention what he went to grad school for? I can understand having trouble with some high school material (especially if you were taking the Japanese equivalent of AP-level material, though that doesn't seem to be the case here), but it seems like you should at least be able to pass most courses, especially if you're an adult with a graduate school-level education.

I dunno man I don't think I could do well on math in high school without learning everything again and I'm 27. Then again I'm an humanities major...

Their school is supposed to be a decent one, I believe, so I can buy him having trouble.

I was wondering that a lot too, actually. I mean, even if it wasn't something math/science related, you'd think he would at least be able to read/write at a high school level.

High school level literature is probably poo poo in Asia.

I remember there being a lot of 'what was the author feeling about this passage' questions in middle school. I loving hated them. I hear high school is the same.

Not even 'trying to imply', feeling.

Yeah but he fails literally everything, not just math/science (and I think I could probably relearn high school math/science well enough to get at least a B pretty quickly, even if I did poorly on the first test or two, but I'm also somewhat inclined towards those subjects). Unless Japanese high school is WAY harder to pass than American high school, it seems weird for him to do so poorly in courses like Japanese.

I guess it's possible he has an MBA or something, though I don't think people usually refer to an MBA as "graduate school", even though it technically is.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
He's going to a prestigious prep school (ie: all AP classes, probably), and from what I hear Japanese education is really big on memorizing lists of random facts.

REALISTIC maids. The period costumes and boots are really nice touches.

I want ReLife to go on and blow away all the cliches, but I would settle for just turning the pool episode into a total "oh hey we're at the pool, let's have fun" without pervy swimsuit gazing.

it's going to resort to pervy swimsuit gazing, isn't it

Not realistic? How is jealousy from coworkers resulting in them treating the "suckup" badly unrealistic? Hell, the current running throughout the entire series is crippling stress, depression, trauma and abuse from office workplaces.

Just that in this case, he's taking care of the person who lost their poo poo rather than that person having to make do on their own.
