The tone was hinted at fairly heavily near the beginning of the episode as the dad is (maybe for the first time) all alone in the apartment that seems far too quiet.

I think I last heard the door opening sound at 6:00 in Half-Life 2.

Also - not ready for those last couple minutes.

Oh, definitely, it just caught me off guard which, if anything, made it more effective.

Man, watching while slightly hungry was a bad idea. And it didn't even make me cry to forget about it.

In this episode, Tsumugi's mom returns from the dead to remind her to eat all her fish.

While it wasn't an emotionally devastating roller coaster like last week, Tsumugi's sudden realization that food actually comes from somewhere and turns into you was super cute. I don't think I had that revelation until sometime in my teens.

Nowhere to go but up.

Also the stunning debut of Kotori's mom ... right at the end of the series.

I like the character but something seemed ... odd about the way she looks here. Maybe the only-lower-lip lipstick coloring or something. Reminds me a bit of Chiyo's cameo in the last episode, with her GIGANTIC EYES.

Also she didn't get flustered! Her getting all flustered in the original manga was the best part!

Are my eyes deceiving me or did the animation budget tank with this last episode? Tsumugi was basically twerking at one frame a second... :stare:

I'm also super weirded out by the father calling his daughter "Tsumugi-san" but that might be some Japanese thing I haven't managed to run into in the past ten years.

I figured he was being ironically respectful as some sort of in-jokey roleplay thing. A game he was playing with her, sort of.

I do not believe so.

Not yet, at least. If it doesn't get a s2, j will be supremely sad. Alternatively: read the very good manga?

If you've watched the anime, what's a good starting point for the manga?

Read from the beginning anyways.

I'm pretty sure at least one episode was sorta altered, cause I reread bits of the manga and found the sequence different from the anime.

EDIT: Oh, I remember. The thing about Tsumugi going out while Inuzaka was sick happens after a chapter where Tsumugi wanders by herself and gets lost, leading to Inuzaka getting angry at her.

It's even brought up in the sick chapter.

Plus, some chapters are skipped over.

The anime also briefly mentions their neighbors in the fish episode (they run into their neighbors, who give them some fish), who got slightly more focus in an earlier manga chapter.

The manga only has thirty-some-odd chapters at the moment and every single one of them is a gem. Hop on.

Also, while I did like the way the anime combined the "Tsumugi runs off" and "Kouhei is sick" chapters, his angry outburst in the manga has more impact, mostly because we follow him around as he gets more and more panicked, and we don't know where she went until he does.

Anime counterpoint: The shark song was adorable.

Actually for the most part I watch anime that isn't heavily action based with my wife and reading through a manga at the same time isn't the same :shobon:

There's also the problem where pretty much every anime we watch together decides not to finish the manga run tho

Yeah, I guess if you're reading / watching something together than anime beats manga hands down.

When it comes to anime adaptations... Usually if I find that the manga has overtaken the anime I'll jump to the manga out of a desire to get on with the story, and then I won't return to the anime.

It happened with Yona.
