There is indeed no requirement to ever use the chain-dash unless you're trying to get everything in the game. I know this because I absolutely could not reliably chain-dash ever for the life of me; the timing was just such an incredible awful unfun bitch that I finished the game, got every single non-chain-dash-required thing in the game, spent a full day beating my head against the chain-dash segments without ever successfully completing any of the ones where you have to change course midway through, and gave up on the game in disgust.
