Necc0 posted:hey wow turns out you can store data in any file extension you want turns out it's totally arbitrary! It's actually a valid png file though. It's still not impressive because pngs can have arbitrary data chunks. They could also use steganography and store the game rom in the lowest bit or two of each color channel of each pixel. That would limit the game file size, but that's on theme.

Sorry OP but actually creating and knowing new things isn't nearly as interesting or cool as drinking heavily and hating everything

So many people hate the Pico-8, which I really just don't get. Someone wondered to themselves, "could I do [thing]?" They took to a chair with an IDE/ interpreter open, began working, and, however much time later, came out with [thing]. other people wanted to use [thing] as a vehicle to express their creativity, and now they have, and the overall results are kind of mediocre from a quality perspective, but hey -- [thing] actually works and it's kind of interesting how it works. Meanwhile, over at Something Awful, man children have stirred from their synchronized afternoon naps to hate [thing] because.. Well, I don't really know why.

I don't hate the thing. I just think it would be better if it was actually emulating an actual instruction set instead of interpreting lua. If anything it is insufficiently nerdy for my taste.

It sucks because it's intended to trick dumb people into thinking [thing] is more clever than it actually is. The Big Bang Theory of retro indie games.

While I don't hate thing myself, this is an accurate statement. It's a modern game engine wrapped up to look like a retro console.

I think the whole point of it is to build games inside of a set of working technical constraints, as opposed to a lot of the twee indy stuff on steam and elsewhere that just adopts pixelly aesthetics to prey on nostalgia but still clocks in at multiple gigs to download even if the constraints are arbitrary and not "authentic" enough the gimmick of using little PNGs to do it is interesting, to me

I get it. It's more like I expected it to be one thing, and then it wasn't. Now I'm probably going to try to create what I thought it was but quit as soon as I realize how daunting that is.
