I'm torn on Xcom 2. It does improve on the first in a lot of ways, but there's a lot of decisions I don't really like all that much. I mean, it's partly because I'm really bad at the game, but hoo boy. I cannot tell you how many times one mistake in a battle actually cost me my entire campaign. So I'm looking forward to this to maybe show me how not to be so awful, and then maybe the game will be fun.

Bruceski posted:Sounds like you need to invest in backup plans. Both in-mission (never save critical shots or advancing a position for the last character of the turn if you can possibly avoid it) and outside of it (have backup soldiers, not just an A-team, and cycle them so it's not a bunch of rookies in the lategame.)

A little sad that Good Ol' Jane Kelly is gonna be kicked to the curb at the first chance. She's usually one of the most memorable things for a first playthrough of the game simply because she's there from the start. I'm going to enjoy watching the rest of this, because I am trash on veteran even. Commander is way out of my league.

WrightOfWay posted:Phantom is arguably the best skill in the game. Having a scout is incredibly useful and being a man down in fights is well worth never activating a pod that you don't want to again. Also swords are garbage even if they are cool. I'm not sure why Firaxis decided to give them terrible damage and accuracy compared to Shotguns.

I'm sorry you're wrong, Guava. Bullwark owns.

Run & Gun rangers exist to delete an enemy. There's an enemy in a bad spot? Well it's dead now because that ranger just ran up next to it and did a 25 damage crit. You got one of the more annoying alien enemies on you? It's also just been deleted.

Let me explain why Bullwark is such a good skill, at least to my playstyle. I call it "scorch the earth, and then do it again for good measure" My main squad is two rangers, two grenadiers, a specialist and the last slot is either a sniper or a spark. Everyone but the specialist has at least one explosive. My rangers run forward, my grenadiers blow everything up, and then the rangers delete the enemies. "Cover" basically does not exist for me. The rangers are usually fine because they're running so far ahead that they reach the next section of cover, but the grenadiers are usually in worse places. So bullwark is sometimes the ONLY high cover my grenadiers have.

killer_robot posted:Maybe I'm missing something down thread- but what are the pips at the bottom of the squad selection/mission recap scene for? They're usually full but once in a while they're missing one or two pips. I've been playing this game for a while, actually finished it a few times on commander level, but haven't noticed them until recently after a few months break from playing the game.
