Though of course, that raises the question of how that part of the base is accessed.

And assuming it's the same style chip that was plugged into the Commander, it's huge, spiky, and intentionally designed to never be removed. Agreed. It reminds me of Leonid Rogozov, a soviet surgeon who removed his own appendix while snowed in at an Arctic research station.
