Have cork city played really well here or are Genk suffering due to lack of games played?

Genk's preseason got hosed up pretty bad with early matches and the team isn't that good as is. Still enough to beat Cork.

Meanwhile, poor Viitorul getting absolutely shitcanned by Gent, 5-0 down with 15 mins to go

Tbf he's always been good going forward, and La Liga defending is going to be even worse in preseason. I'm just mad we sold him for €7m. At least now we have the balls to tell clubs to gently caress off for only giving 12m for good lads like Izquierdo

Assist against Leicester tonight + involved in 2 other goals.

Nothing could be done about his price, he had a buyout clause for that amount. No use fretting about something that's been decided ages ago. I just hope they can keep the current team together, I don't want anybody to leave now. Next year, yeah, no way we can keep everyone. But this year I want everybody to stay, play a good CL campaign, and get the title again.

It'll probably be Ferrera. He has been under fire for months now and the football hasn't improved much. I will die of laughter if he's replaced by Wilmots though.

And my club got 1 point against the mighty Kortrijk. They played good at times, but the goal they conceded was pretty dumb. We need some extra defenders asap. And again, we had difficulties going forward and scoring. So many side- and backpasses. It's like no-one wants to take risks. We did score from a corner, that's positive. Let's hope it's not the only goal we score on setpieces this season!

Well seeing as there's no Eurofoot threads yet I guess this will remain the MDT for Belgian clubs in Europe. Anderlecht-Rostov starts in 15 minutes for a chance to get into the 4th Qualifier of the CL and therefore guarantee being in the group phases of a European competition come September.

ANDERLECHT GO THROUGH IF:

- They win
- The game is a draw with a scoreline lower than 2-2

ROSTOV GO THROUGH IF

- They win
- The game is a draw with a scoreline higher than 2-2

On my phone screen that smiley looked a lot more confused.
Anyway, it's a weird signing. Especially since they just announced: "There were more than 40 serious applications!" and then they picked Martinez?
I also got a newsflash that Mancini was the new coach, but it got quickly corrected. Too bad.

According to Belgian media the final three (after Verhaeghe vetoed Preud'homme to do a double job Club/NT) were Rudi Garcia, Martinez and Advocaat.

So I'm glad we didn't get Advocaat again (and lol that he was even reconsidered) but how do you see those three names and not immediately go for Garcia?

R. Mute
Jul 27, 2011

I've already seen articles describing him as an anti-Wilmots. But he's a defensive mess, his play-style is very vulnerable to teams just sitting back and soaking up the pressure, he rarely if ever changes his tactics - I've heard all of this before. His main advantage over Wilmots is that he isn't a glorified PE teacher and actually knows how to make his own system work in theory, but other than that...

belgend

Well, gently caress the NT, club before country. Speaking of, there's two teams in Eurofoot who want to prove they're not as fail as Anderlecht.

Gent visits Viitorul at 20:15 CET (in about an hour)

GENT GO THROUGH IF:

- They don't lose with six goals difference

VIITORUL GO THROUGH IF:

- Viitorul won't go through

Genk heads to the Oirish half an hour later

GENK GO THROUGH IF:

- They don't lose
- In case of a loss, they'll go through with only one goal down starting from 2-1 (so also 3-2, 4-3, etc)

CORK CO THROUGH IF:

- They win with a two goal difference

Well we had the EL draw since the CL draw don't matter and we got some clubs.

But I hear you asking, who are these clubs the Belgian teams in Eurofoot drew.

Ask no more, behold: an opponents writeup

Anderlecht are headed to Czechia:

Sportovní klub Slavia Praha - fotbal a.s. aka Červenobílí (The red and whites) aka Sešívaní (The sewn-ones) aka Věčná Slavia (The Eternal Slavia)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Since the independence of the Czech Republic, they have won the Czech League three times and also have 3 Czech Cup wins. Most of their titles, however, come from the Czechoslovakia era. 4 cup wins and 13 league titles from the club's history are from that period. They're owned by a Chinese private energy company.

Trainer: Dusan Uhrin Jr. (CZE)
Main league rivals: Sparta Prague
You've maybe heard of: Milan Skoda, Jiri Bilek
Founded: 1892 (as ACOS Praha)

This will be Slavia's third match in the competition. They've beaten the Estonian Levadia and the Portuguese Rio Ave.

Meanwhile, a Belgian club meets a Macedonian club when Gent go up to face:

Klubi i Futbollit Shkëndija aka Kuq e Zi (The Red and Blacks)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Shkendija were founded by Albanians in Yugoslavia to undermine the Titoist worker's paradise have people from the Albanian diaspora to Yugoslavia have their own team to root for and unite around. Disbanded by the government in the 80s, it would return after the fall of Yugoslavia in the Macedonian football pyramid. Their fans are a bunch of far-right fascists (as in, their name references the Albanian collaborators with the Nazis) who want to kil lthe Serbs to install an Albanian state in Macedonia and have beat the poo poo out of a former opponent's fans (Buducnost Podgorica) went they went to a match in Skopje.

Football wise, they've won the Macedonian League once, won the Super Cup as league champion and are the current holders of the Macedonian Cup.

Trainer: Bruno Akrapovic (BIH)
Main league rivals: Vardar, Teteks
You've maybe heard of: Stephan Vujcic, Ferhan Hasani
Founded: 1979

Shkendija have punched their way through all qualifiers thus far, beating the Polish Cracovia, the Azeri Neftçi and the Czech Mlada Boleslav

Genk play a team with surprisingly similar kits in Croatia

Nogometni klub Lokomotiva Zagreb aka Lokosi

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Listen, these guys being in this competition is a loving disgrace. They're a Dinamo Zagreb feeder team. The Croatian FA lets them play in the First division as well alongside their proper team. What a loving shambles. Their only honours were before the independence of Croatia, when they were still their own team. Sad

Trainer: Tomislav Ivkovic (CRO)
Main league rivals: Competent FAs
You've maybe heard of: Ask a Dinamo fan
Founded: 1914

Not Dinamo have also gone through all qualifiers thus far, beating the Andorran Santa Coloma, the Finnish RoPS and the Ukranian Vorskla Poltava

The matches take place on August 18 & 25

EUROFOOT RESULTS

The CL drew the following group for Club: Leicester, Porto, Copenhagen

The EL has given us these scores:

Anderlecht 3-0 Slavia (2-0) (6-0 aggregate)
Genk 2-0 Lokomotiva (1-0) (4-2 aggregate)
Shkendija 0-4 Gent (0-0) (1-6 aggregate)

This means that all five Belgian clubs that qualified for Eurofoot made it to the group stages! I think that's a first! The only downside of the qualifiers was Anderlecht losing to Rostov in the CL.

EL draw is tomorrow, we'll do a roll call of the Group Stage opponents next week
