I enter notes and calculations about orbital periods and the like into my dataslate as the others' questions wash over me...save for Turncoat.

"What? No. Nononononononono. A thousand times no. X-Wings have a distinctive silhouette, yes. But in terms of flight performance, speed, durability, maneuverability, combat performance, etc. There's nothing more suited. As for armaments, We can probably safely nix all but a couple concussion torps apiece. Our lasers should pack all the punch we need and the ammo requirement is almost nil. Besides, if we reach the point where we need torps on a covert insertion, then we're fraggin vaped regardless."

I turn back to my dataslate and send a message to the quartermaster about parts for my ship.

Well, I guess now we know how the Quartermaster is gonna react to "No really, one of the new pilots is a flippin Ewok..."

"Certainly wouldn't hurt to keep a couple of X-Wings on hand, just in case. Paint 'em up like pirate fighters, have them fly escort for the main batch on the freighter," mused Winter, "Assuming it's close enough to working to fix up, of course."

She looked back over to Forney, wondering what the man in charge had in mind.

Frgrbrgr
Jan 20, 2009
Everyone:

Forney nods, "Sounds like a plan. Pops, you take the freighter and lead the party to make contact with the Hutt. Vessery, Stardancer, you two wait in the freighter with your X-wings, in case something bad shows up."

Lant VII - 1706 Local Time - Scene 3

The Wayward Destiny drops out of hyperspace after an uneventful trip through the Periphery system. Inside, seven pilots share an incredibly cramped ride. In order to fit the two X-wings, the mechanics had to pull out not only all the inner cargo hold levels, but the entire passenger quarter, leaving just the cockpit and gunnery stations.

Entry onto Lant VII goes easier than expected as well. From the sounds of it, you're one of the only visitors to even show up today. Of course, this could mean you stand out as well... but so far, the fudged IFF codes provided by Forney and the paint job are doing the trick. You land at the spaceport and get ready for your first mission.

Bar Team - Pops, Winter, Crash, Reist, Rusty

Forney's instructions upon arriving couldn't be more clear. "Head to the Broken Engine bar and ask for 'Graves.'" The walk there tells more than enough about Lant VII to figure the place out. Just another boring backwater, ignored by both sides of the war, full of destitute ex-miners and the even destituter people that used to serve them. The Hollings Mining Company had a nice set-up here, until the price of neolonium tanked following the discovery of an asteroid cloud full of the stuff. Much easier to process it from there than from deep in the ground. So Hollings pulled out, and the people of Lant VII turned to serving as a trading post, and little else, though the local pirates do speak well of the planet's brewing methods.

So, it's no surprise as you walk through the streets that there's definite signs of criminal activity all around you. The dominant pirate gang in the area seems to be Devil's Fist, well-known for violent initiation acts and a bloody approach to any jobs they take on. Lots of turnover in the lower ranks, if you know what I mean.

Hopefully, when you get to the bar, it'll be relatively empty. Of course, when you get there and walk in the door, the bar is full of them.

Pops: So, do you go ahead with Forney's plan, or look around first and try to get a better read of the place? What are you most worried about happening? Do you want to protect any member of your team over the others?

Winter: Entering the bar, you can sense an overwhelming bloodthirst from within. Now, you can tell where it's coming from - a back corner that's dimly lit, where the Devil's Fist are gathered most densely. One figure, however, sits alone in the corner booth. You can tell just from the way others avoid him that he's the leader. For some reason, however, you don't sense any bloodthirst from him... rather, it's more a sense of calm and contemplation. Do you share these feelings with the rest of your team? How do you feel about having them?

Devil's Fist's leader

Crash: Oh, people to fight! But no, you can't fight... at least, not yet. In fact, as you take a look around, you see bits of yourself in these violent people. Angry at the world, angry at everybody... sure, you got dealt a bad hand, but so did they. And they didn't find a good path to walk... so they settled with this. Who do you see that reminds you the most of yourself?

Reist: Ugh... a pirate bar. Not that you aren't unfamiliar with them - your days on the circuit saw plenty of nights hitting up whatever local joint you could drink at, picking fights and bragging of wins. So... what do you know about the Devil's Fist gang? What run-in have you had with them in the past?

Rusty: Beep boop. Do you have any data on this gang in your memory banks? Have you worked with them in the past? And, who in the room do you want to kill the most?

Port Team - Calum, Nema

Staying behind in the Wayward Destiny - joy!

Calum, Nema: What do you do to pass the time? Who of the two of you is in charge?

It's funny how variables change the mental equation. Were it just Pops heading into the bar, he could play off that he's just a bulk freight operator - the smallest fish, not worth pursuing. With a group, they become a bigger target - any level of organization takes resources. Resources a predatory gang would love to try and bleed dry. Fortunately, his group had the best backup they could hope for - If a firefight were to happen, he knew Rusty would already have priority targets picked out. It was this reassurance that allowed him to allay his worst fear: an attempt at being pressed into service by the local gangs. Cliched as it may be, his primary concern was for Winter - Crash was a homicidal teddybear that could rip the nuts off a Rancor in record time, Rusty was an assassin droid that could take out the handlers of said Rancor before the gate dropped, and Raist proved last night that he could hold his own in a bar brawl. Winter, on the other hand, was unaccounted for. She was here for a reason, but he hadn't quite seen her in action yet. It would be almost comical to watch one of the local punks try something. Still, they called him Pops for a reason - he kept a watchful eye over all of his kids.

First and foremost, he placed his trust in his team. Walking right up to the bar, he gives the place a casual glance and a first assessment, expecting them to come up with the finer details and act appropriately. "Afternoon. I'll take a double of whatever kind of vodka you have, neat, and a conversation with Graves."

I catch the scents of everyone in the bar before we've even walked through the door, adrenaline, fear, drugs, and the like. I'm dressed much like everyone else here, cast-off and threadbare clothing of utilitarian design. The others carry standard sidearms, I opted for a larger blaster repeater-made to look rusted and patched together- strapped across my back. I notice the leader, stylized skull and crossbones on his coat, and nearest his booth is a Gungan. Obviously a part of his gang, maybe even a second in command. The absolute stillness and icy glare in their eyes belie the goofiness of their pendulous ears. I've met a few Gungans, generally considered to be incompetent and harmless, idiotic galactic jokes. This Gungan is anything but.

I let the tall ones do the talking.

While Rusty's programmed social dynamic data was several thousand years out of date, he was a witness to one deal between his former 'employer' and the Devil's Fist. During said deal, the Devil's Fist meatbag bragged about torturing initiates by making them hold a thermal detonator on a dead man's switch for days at a time. Of course, the meatbag couldn't fall asleep without dropping it and blowing themselves up, so the new recruits kept a strict diet of drug stimulants going in order to survive. By the time the initiation was over, they were so addicted to the chems that they'd follow any orders just to get their fix. It was, Rusty thought at the time, a pity that no meatbags present at that deal had brought along any thermal detonators, but then the story might have been simple bragging rather than fact.

Just the same, Rusty scanned the gang meatbags for any that might be a new recruit undergoing such hazing. They would automatically be an HVT in this sort of space, where the blast could possibly kill everyone in the bar. And if captured alive, that meant a free explosive for Rusty to keep.

Calum was glad that he had been given this backup role: he always felt safer in the cockpit of a fighter than out and out on the ground. He had been tinkering with his X-Wing to help it produce a little bit more speed, but nothing drastic: the mechanics for Grey Squadron had been very possessive of their charges, and the little scrape that Calum had got into it hadn't gotten them on his good side. Still, he hadn't joined the Rebels to make friends.

He turns around as he hears Neme call out to him, and contemplates the question.

"TIEs? Well, let me put it this way, TIEs are a ship for true aces. The X-Wing is a decent ship, but its deflectors are a fallback, a crutch. The idea is not to get hit, and TIEs encourage you to not get hit, both by their excellent manoeuvrability and their lack of shields. I mean, in a TIE/ln you can do a turn so sharp and fast that you can easily black out, and there aren't any fancy mechanisms to prevent you from doing that turn either. A TIE has no shields or life support, instead it dumps all that extra power in the engines. In the hands of a mediocre pilot, the TIE is a liability, but in the hands of an ace? Whole different story."

That was the downside of seeing through the Force. You get vague emotional impressions of people when you see them, sure, but there are some things -- the more intense feelings -- that you just don't want piped directly in your brain. The leader, fashion choices aside, was like an oasis of calm in the midst of the chaotic feelings filling the bar.

Winter leaned over to Reist, "What's your read on the guy at the corner table? Skull and bones, cape, the whole bit. He's putting off a weird vibe, seems too calm."

Alright, let's assume that Calum doesn't know about what happened to the Pegasus Knights and that isn't a dig at me, Neme thinks. Probably best to offer another sounding question. He thinks of all the TIE Fighters he's destroyed over his career. Piloted by recruits? Veterans? People like himself? People like Calum...?

"So then what do you make of those 'mediocre' pilots?" He asks, and there's just a touch of edge in his voice. His squad mates may not have been "mediocre", but this is definitely a nerve. "I've seen Imperial casualty records--even when they win they lose an awful lot of TIEs, and I doubt they recovered all the pilots. Do you ever think of battles like that, how they might have gone differently, whether those pilots could be alive or not if you did something different...?"

I'm going to call this "icing out", since it makes it sound like Neme thinks Calum is callous to the fate of his squadmates. Rolling Blue!

"Uhh... one second..." he says, as he bolts into the back somewhere. You can hear the distinctive slam of from the back - yeah, he just ran out the back door.

As you turn around to face the rest of the bar, every member of the gang is now staring at you with a mixture of joy and anger, and many have drawn weapons. A shout from the corner pauses what could've been a slaughter, "Hold it, guys... let's see what we have here..." The Devil's Fist leader gets up and strolls slowly through the bar, with the crowd parting to give him ample space. The man radiates with power. He approaches Pops, eyeing the group warily, "Who are you? Come now... no secrets among friends, right?"

Pops: The leader smiles at you and Reist, "Let's drop the act. Name's Zero. We heard you were coming. Of course... we have to test you out first..." Razor reaches behind the bar and pulls out a Seinar rocket launcher. "We got a few... unwelcome visitors... on their way here now. You want info? Help us take them out." As if on cue, a loud explosion just outside rattles the shack. Zero's men begin heading to the door, pouring outside amid blaster shots and vehicle roars. Do you tell your people to help out? Or do you have something better in mind? And where the hell is this Hutt?!

Reist: Seems that your bluff didn't quite work - of course, Zero was holding all the cards anyway. Do you really trust Zero to help out if you help him defend the bar? Or do you try to warn Pops? What are you most scared of happening?

Crash & Rusty: Action time! Do you jump to it or do you wait for orders from Pops?

Winter: How do you feel about the prospect of joining a gang war? Are you really ready for this? Are you worried of working with people like this?

Not in the Bar

Calum: Your trek towards the banging doesn't last that long. As you enter the cargo hold, you notice a large tear in the side of the ship, and a muzzle poking in. Through the hole, you can hear distinct voices, "We burn-em all take-em stuff rip-em hearts! Yarrr!!! This.... this can't be good. And then the blaster goes off, sending a shot into a nearby bulkhead. What do you do?

Neme: You behind the turret controls, and while the layout is alien, the video screen in front of you is more than clear - half a dozen Chadra-Fan's dressed in rags and holding a variety of blasters and buzzsaws. They almost looked cute in a way, but then of course you notice one of them sticking its blaster into the ship's cargo hold and firing it off. They look whipped up into a frenzy, and likely to breach the hold in the next minute if you don't do anything. So... what do you do?

"Of course they couldn't make the controls to this easy and standardized," mutters Neme as he looks for labels while trying to watch the viewscreen with the Chadra-Fans at the same time. "That would be sensible, and this galaxy is INSANE!" He seizes a joystick that looks separate from the main throttle and control yoke and maneuvers it. The viewscreen turns, but does it control the turret? Only one way to find out!

I think I'll take that Use Something Unfamiliar roll.

All the Bigs pull out their weapons just as we start hearing crashes and commotion outside the bar.
I swing my repeater forward on it's sling, the tables are just tall enough I can run under them without needing to hunch over, so I do so. I sprint through legs and under tables, snagging the table closest to the door and knocking it over to use as cover.
"I have a good feeling about this!" I shout back just before bracing my blaster rifle on the table's edge and waiting for targets.

Bar Crew

You all head out the rear door and circle through an alley filled with things you'd rather not think about. Ahead, however, is the unmistakable whine of blaster fire, as the Devil's Fist engage with whomever is out to get them. You emerge out onto the street, flanking a couple dozen Chadra-Fan's dressed in what appears to be rags and tribal clothing. Scars and tattoos cover most of their bodies. They haven't noticed you yet.

Pops: Well, this escalated quickly. Do you rush into battle, or hang back and try to protect the more inexperienced members of your crew, like Winter. What do you see that could be an even bigger threat than the Chadra-Fan gang?

Crash: You burst into the street, ready for battle! Who do you see that is the biggest threat among the Chadra-Fans? Clearly, taking that one out is the way to victory!

Rusty: Time to take out the tiny meatbags! As you fire at them, something in your memory banks stirs. You recall something... something about this particular group of Chadra-Fans. What is it?

Winter: As you set up to provide cover fire, you notice an innocent person caught up - hiding for cover in the middle of the streets. What do you do?

Reist: Are you looking forward to this battle? Who do you most want to impress? How do you fight?

Port Crew

Neme somehow wrangles the turret into submission, and lets off a round straight into the ground, sending the Chadra-Fans flying. Combined with some blaster fire from inside the hold - presumably from Calum - the boarding crew has been effectively neutralized.

Neme: However, you spot across the tarmac something definitely more worrying than some break-in gang. An Imperial shuttle is sitting with its hold open, and a man stands eyeing your ship. What do you do?

"Remember - shoot to disable. Rusty's going to cause enough havoc as... it... huh."

He hadn't expected a rabid gang of Chadra-Fan. Still, a gun was a gun, no matter who was pointing it at you. Still, something sounded... off. It was more the report of the blaster fire than anything. Normally, a street gang would be able to mop the floor with the little fuzzballs, but every blaster sounds juuust a little different. Familiar.

"Kids, I think these guys are packed with some "formal" firepower. Let's get a look at their gear afterwards."

Pops was only armed with a blaster pistol. He could take the occasional potshot, but at this range, Winter and Crash would reign. Staying in the middle of the group, he does his best to provide spotting assistance, keeping a view on the grand scheme. Adrenaline leads to tunnel vision, and tunnel vision inside or outside of the cockpit gets you ambushed.

"Winter, check 3:00, down 2 degrees. Doesn't that one seem a bit slower than the others?"

Maybe it was proximity to someone innately force-sensitive, or maybe it was age and experience, but something seems off.

I sweep the crowd, settling on the one slightly bigger than the others. Fun fact about chadra-fan: they aren't, on average, much bigger than ewoks. The big one though, it's got 'leader' written all over it.
I flip off the safety, hear the high pitched whine of the power pack charging the coils, the readout goes from amber to green...I squeeze the trigger.

You take control of it. (seize the upper hand for everyone?)
The rifle vibrates in my hand as the focusing crystals in the big gun's barrel rotate, allowing me to unleash a stream of blaster bolts so quickly, it seems like one continuous line of deadly light spraying back and forth across the crowd of enemies.
Once my crew is in place, I plan to take out the Leader.

So, what I'm trying to do is basically covering fire for everyone else, if the Chadra-fan are ducking for cover they can't shoot at the others, the 'Take Control' option seemed to fit best, but I'm happy to change this if you don't think so.

Neme successfully resists the urge to cheer after firing on the Chadra-Fans (too bad, but they started it!) to notice...uh oh. He ducks down behind the center console. Is the cockpit glass tinted? He can't remember.

"Uh, Calum?" he grabs the intercom and calls down to the cargo bay. "One of your old friends is here, and he doesn't look happy!"

What's he doing here? Please, ask questions, work!

Holy crap, it worked. Why is the empire interested in this place? Why did the Chadra-Fans come after us and not them? Their shuttle is fancier!

Winter, having clambered up some pipes to the roof of the bar, keyed her commlink, "All Grey, be advised that there is a civilian pinned-down in the crossfire. Left of that speeder." She hefted her blaster and took a few pot-shots at the Chadra-Fan who were braving the hail of fire from Crash. Shoot to disable? These things were small enough that she wasn't exactly confident in hitting them to begin with.

He wasn't looking forward to this battle, he just wanted to contact a few scum and then get the information and go, but he also realized that things are going hot and they were going hot quickly. He rolled behind a piece of cover behind the assassin droid, his blaster drawn. He looked to Pops and Winter before standing up with a flourish. Flipping a switch on his blaster he went to auto fire, a wry grin spread across his scarred face. "I suggest you run off now, A Sun diver doesn't get scared, and I am a drat good shot." Riest then fires a flurry of shots at the gang members, he thinks he strikes a few, his aim seemed really on par.

They start to take fire, and he rolls to the next batch of cover and hides behind it as he waits for his blaster to cool. "Get of here you bantas, you are out gunned, out classed and most of all, you all are kind of ugly. "

Rusty scanned the crowd of meatbags, focusing on the ones that were the nominal enemies of the team. It wouldn't do to have these Devil Fists turn on the squad just because they were focused on the battle, but the battle was the primary objective of the moment. He picked out the Chadra-Fan with the heaviest armaments, computed a firing solution for the rocket, and fired.

You break it - disabling the heavy weapon

As the fireball erupted from the impact point, it stirred a memory in HK-32's newer programming components. This particular tribe of Chadra-Fan were pacifists. Well, that just showed Rusty not to rely on meatbags to do proper upgrades, since clearly these meatbags were not acting very pacifistic.

Scene 3 - Wrapping soon!

This is the end of the scene - finish up any stuff and I'll fast forward to the next planning scene.

Neme: A dozen Chadra-Fan suddenly rush around the side of the Imperial shuttle, with the officer staring at them in disgust. He ushers them aboard quickly, and the shuttle takes off soon after, screeching up out of the spaceport and off into space. Calum lowers the hold door and steps out, watching along with you. He glances up at you with a shrug, "Huh."

Imperials are interested in this place in order to replace Devil's Fist with its own Chadra-Fan gang, which should answer both questions!

Reist: Your shots, combined with the rest of the squadrons, effectively blow the gang out of the street. Stragglers take off, running at full speed for the spaceport - where, almost immediately after, a suspicious shuttle takes off. Gotta be more to that story. But first, the Devil's Fist. One of the gang members is impressed with your shooting. Who is it, what offer do they tempt you with, and how do you respond?

Crash: Nice shooting! You and the crew completely clear the street of Chadra-Fan. However, you notice some innocent person on the street who looks scared at you and what you've done. How do you respond?

Rusty: Yeah - you blowed it up. The Chadra-Fan is vaporized in a second, and those arround it are thrown meters across the rough ferrocrete. Why do you think these Chadra-Fan changed? What do you do with that information?

Winter: Your shot, as if on cue, strikes a Chadra-Fan in the throat, killing it instantly. How do you feel, having killed? Violence erupts on the street as the rest of your team demolishes the gang. What do you do?

Gain the condition Guilty

Pops: You try to figure it out, but nothing's coming. Not that it matters - your squadron quickly mops up the gang, Rusty's rocket being a nice finishing touch. What do you say to them?

Gain the condition Useless

As the fight settles down, Zero approaches you and hands you a small datapad. "Here's the 'Hutt' you were looking for. Thanks for the assist." What do you do?

Maybe age really was catching up with him. While he tried to piece something together, the firefight had not just come and gone, but the whole drat mission had flown by him. Hell, it's a wonder he didn't get himself killed. Still, the team did great out there - did they really need him holding them back?

A little phased by the rush of what happened, the feeling of a datapad in his hand snapped him back to. "A-oh! Not a problem. I take it you've got everything covered here?" Tucking the datapad away, he gives a quick hand signal to pull the team together before offering his hand once more to seal the deal. "Anything else we should know about this Hutt?"

Words to the group as a whole can wait until they're back on the freighter - somewhere a bit more private. They had a job to finish.
