I feel like I would enjoy parts of this movie, in the same way that the weird kid in school enjoys dissecting the frog in biology class. At least it sounds more interesting than that Obama-produced movie I can't even remember the name of, where the world is ending but the most tense situation they can imagine is awkwardness between a rich white family and an even richer black family.

they were correct that the final action scene is pretty badass and everything else is extremely stupid

would the movie work as third parter to the first two Anchorman films, given how much of it is about Respecting Journalists?

i came out of the movie with some chuckles and a few thoughts, but ultimately my main one was that it didn't explain any factions motivations.

on one hand that let's the viewer project whatever they want onto the factions (of which their seem to be 4 or 5? of two types: state trained or second amendment militias), and ultimately that means the writer/director/producer is a coward

wanted to play bf2042 during the last act

I haven't listened to the ep yet but I legitimately didn't know what, if anything, the movie was trying to say. War is bad? Idk they sure made it look cool. Journalists are important? They didn't do anything and all seem deeply hosed up and then die. It had about as much to say about anything as that Battle: Los Angeles alien invasion movie

It’s funny how the A24 marketing tried to position it as like, the smart version of the Purge movies and instead it’s actually the dumb version of the Purge movies.

Still struggling with this as well. Like was it a commentary on how dangerous war journalism is? How the only way to feel alive is in the middle of a war zone?

the purge is so much smarter than civil war lol, remember they had "the first purge" that was like "yeah of course they'd do murder experiments in black neighborhoods first?" just that premise is more than this whole movie put together

A civil war movie where all the action was like the action sequences from Children of Men where it's just hectic and scary and senseless and the protagonists are powerless and get owned out of nowhere would be pretty good. Just the jesse plemons scene but for like 90 minutes

Movie suckin off the Importance of Journalism is a pass, nothing is less important honestly

Children of Men is about the awfulness of neoliberal hellworld; this movie seems to be about how we have to preserve neoliberal hellworld by maintaining our faith in hollowed-out institutions.

I got the sense the movie also kinda wanted to be apocalypse now, but was so loving bad at that aspect it fell comically flat. "You don't know who you're fighting for??? 😱😱😱"

the funny thing about the movie is that instead of presenting journalists as brave freedom fighters they instead come across as disgusting opportunists out for their own erotic fascination with violence.

tbh the movie worked for me on that level.

right, but i don't think that's what they intended so it was very funny they were outing themselves

Oh no not in the slightest. Garland is completely oblivious somehow to the movie he directed.

Yeah i remember the old black guy being like "I'm sure you understand why I have to get across the country to see the president get executed in person" and thinking no man that sounds crazy and bloodthirsty and THIS is the character we're supposed to think is wise and soulful??

This was how I (and apparently Hesse) took it too, but yeah Alex Garland's actual interviews all being "actually I'm not right OR left" style dumb poo poo made me realize oh no I was supposed to think the journalists were brave heroes, whoops!

The First Purge is amazing because you have this dumbfuck liberal intellectual who ascribes social problems to mystical Jungian nonsense, and is totally clueless about how the government is just using her theories to justify slaughtering poor people. And there's a recurring theme throughout the series where the population isn't actually as violent as the government wants, so they just send death squads out to get those casualties up, up, up!
