Josh said that they were “trying to make a statement about how the Hollywood industry has condemned Harvey Weinstein but still leaves Cosby’s star up.” Funnily enough, the same intent could’ve been communicated via posting the picture of the star, and, well, just saying “why is his star still up? Hollywood doesn’t actually care about stopping abusive structures” or something to that effect. I’m an under-20 cis, het, white guy. I’m surrounded by this type of bullshit humor that relies on combining edginess and irony & blowing both aspects up as far as you can until it’s feasibly possible to argue that the joke stands for any imaginable point you ascribe to it. It’s loving horrendous. It’s not clever, it’s not original, and it’s not funny. It feels like every single man on Earth, from the most regular normie to the most online Nazi has made at least a dozen jokes just like this. This joke is structurally identical in every possible way to something you’d find on /r/dankmemes or the meninist twitter page. When I started realizing caring about other people was good & worth doing, it almost-instantly made me realize that it’s almost impossible to get away from this type of joke/meme. That was why finding Chapo & the Online left was awesome — they did care, they were ironic, but they made fun of people that deserved it in a clear way that really obviously gets across the message that this is loving terrible & you shouldn’t support this, rather than “oh wow, that sure is TWISTED of you to post!” This type of humor has nothing to do with making any actual statement; it’s about masturbating over how desensitized & cool you are for saying transgressive things that are so wrong they Cross the Line Twice. Keep crap like this out of this space, please— it makes it impossible to actually discuss things that matter, or use relevant humor in said discussions.

One was a government hearing, controlled by Republicans though, while the other is ostensibly a democratic primary. I don't think the same influences will necessarily lead to the same outcomes in those scenarios. That said, yes I can imagine a vocal Resistance-y opposition to him falling apart after his groping issues are brushed past, without following up with any substantive or effectual criticisms, a la Trump, so I understand that fear. But what should be done, then- don't bring up the many hilarious pics of him looming over uncomfortable women?

I said that the anti-Trump tactic was not a winning one, though to be fair (1) it was Hillary as the candidate and (2) her campaign team seemed to enjoy loving up, so absent those factors she still could have won.

I feel like their main concern was how adept these freaky teens (no offense) would turn out to be at acting politically and contributing to leftism. Maybe they underestimate the effect of online activism, or maybe they have a point at how comfortable people are to stay ensconced in their online spaces.

SunAndSpring posted:Why ever leave social conservatives alone when you can just stamp out conservatism entirely, honestly? What do I gain from letting some racist gently caress proselytize instead of just making it so he never gets to spread his views for fear of getting arrested I can see an argument for convincing racists, sexists, various deplorables etc. to at least vote in their class interests for a labor populist type (who wouldn't explicitly extend their politics into social equality) to secure a more collectivist economic system for one's country because it'd be better to fight for social justice in an economic climate like that, yes even a racist one, rather than doing it while mired in capitalist oppression. I know it's not that cut and dry, but at least some percentage of racism and sexist oppression is rooted in capitalism perpetuating it. The problem with that is it's not like you can argue racism out of existence- those people either need to come to reality or die. But maybe a more secure and just economic system could move that balance a little.
