It's wild how all the high profile people that worked Bernie's campaign were 1. extremely stupid 2. extremely annoying and 3. opportunistic as gently caress Obviously the state of the Left in this country is not great, but good lord, the hucksters that surrounded him

It's legitimately wild that we're almost certainly going to be seeing an 82 year old Joe Biden face off against a 78 year old Donald Trump for the presidency of the top dog of international capitalism, but: it's also tremendous content

Weirdly I have really enjoyed listened to Movie Mindset despite the fact that I’ve only seen like one of the films they’ve covered. I end up enjoying listening to Will summarize the plot of the film and at the end I’m like “oh, nice, I don’t need to watch this now”

Biden, for whatever reason, doesn't attract the same anger and revulsion as other politicians do, even though he does have a long line of creepy touchy things caught on tape and an allegation of sexual assault from a previous staffer. The Right goes nuts about him, but that isn't anything new. His biggest electoral drawback is he is 100 years old and he looks and sounds every inch of it. And that aint gonna change. Trump is barely younger but he sounds a lot more....energetic.

What are Felix and Matt doing in LA anyway? All I've heard is them complaining about how much they hate it there. I assumed they're working on some sort of project but I don't really get it.

Cached Money posted:Actually the democrats defunded all the cops, so murder is legal now, sad! There are several ugly billboards around Chicago that now read "DEFEND the Cops" with a bunch of smiling cops on it. It's pretty funny.

My favorite Matt moment was, in the middle of an impassioned rant, he proclaimed “there’s a goddamn Cheeto in the White House” - I think it was somewhat early in the Covid era. I absolutely lost it when he said that. God drat. Edit; looked it up and it’s “dang cheeto”, the wording here is important of course

It's one of life's great injustices that he gets to be that hot, ripped and also a professor of history at Princeton (and on top of it, reportedly, a very nice chill dude)

This last episode was funny because I didn't even realize Felix was in the episode until about 10 minutes in when he perked up Regarding AOC - I never got as mad and disappointed at her as other lefties have, and I think still on the whole, she's pretty good (obv as a first world Democratic Party politician), but at the end of the day - you gotta choose to keep the Left happy or play the game the Democratic Party wants you to play to keep getting committee assignments and money. And, unfortunately, we on the Left have no institutional power and we're a bunch of psychotic babies, why would she pick us over them? What benefit does it get her? It's not like there's a party apparatus to keep her honest, or to reward her when she does what we want. It was always gonna go that way because the Left is a tiny, dysfunctional group and the gravitational force of the Democratic Party is there, eager to swallow and co-opt. We should be less angry at the person of AOC and more angry at ourselves for not creating the organizational apparatus that can actually discipline representatives.

i say swears online posted:chapo should do another deep dive on the jfk assassination I recently relistened to their watch episode of JFK, which is still hilarious, and they would no doubt go much further in the direction of “this was an inside job” than they did back then. But I still don’t find GWHB all that compelling of a figure

Tirade posted:I'm coming around to one of Matt's theories that the US is in a kind of end of history spin since 2008, just not how Fukuyama imagined it. This year feels so similar to 2016 when Chapo came to prominence. An increasingly deranged media and political elite that doesn't acknowledge that the democratic party's candidate is widely disliked. An economy that is in the shitter despite economists pointing to charts showing lines going up. But somehow everything feels even stupider. The 2016 to 2024 elections are definitely 'first as tragedy, then as farce'

The 2024 election is so boring and depressing and the war in Gaza is certainly the most horrific thing we've seen perpetrated this side of the Iraq War that I can see they're searching for things to talk about that aren't completely soul killing. Like the 2016 and 2020 elections were tragicomic in their own ways but I don't think either of them were just so uninteresting - there's almost nothing for them to riff about.

The first half of Men was awesome and creepy and it kinda goes completely off the rails at the end but I appreciated the audacity of what they were trying to portray (a man continuously giving birth to himself out of his own butt)
