sleeptalker posted:My guess for BSB is some overpaid consultant suggested Warren's campaign should have a mascot, and the resulting brainstorming session among her creative genius plan-makers, involving ideas like "her pet dog" and "our campaign slogans that barely get any play", produced the most illegible publicity stunt in recent history. Is that why I'm seeing ten articles a day about how Pete has surged 10 points in every swing state in spite of all evidence to the contrary?

quote:He’s still a social liberal, of course, and he isn’t in the culturally conservative/economic populist quadrant where so many unrepresented voters reside. But for the kind of American who is mostly with the Democrats on economics but wary of progressivism’s zest for culture war, Sanders’s socialism might be strangely reassuring — as a signal of what he actually cares about, and what battles he might eschew for the sake of his anti-plutocratic goals. (At the very least he’s no more radical on an issue like abortion than a studied moderate like Mayor Pete.) This is the part she was agreeing with, and given the last sentence of it I think it's consistent with her other attitudes. When he's referring to cultural conservatives, he's not talking about the boat dealership owners, he's referring to a conservative working class, who probably on the whole doesn't particularly like their boss and doesn't care about protecting the tax code for millionaires and can be mobilized on that front. The sort of person, perhaps even young person, who is conservative by cultural inertia rather than a specific ideology, often a nonvoter who can be mobilized to support him on those grounds. Anything else is downstream for that. If Bernie can't get elected at the presidential level, nothing at all is going to change, except for the worse.

Goa Tse-tung posted:what no, why are you taking him at face value? this fucker is just painting Bernie as someone who doesn't care about abortion to hurt Bernie, and created an elaborate troll to get people like you and it seems Amber Of course he is, but it won't hurt him if he paints him that way. Whose mind is he going to change with the article? Who is going to hop off the Bernie train as a result of a Ross Douthat article? He's using the inert conservative in a cynical way, but he's still not wrong. Bernie is not only palatable but even preferable to a great deal of people on the basis that his campaign puts economic issues front and center at all times. If you go talk to people who are Bernie-curious but are not necessarily leftists themselves, they're motivated by that fact. And like I said before, he needs the broadest base of support possible, because if he doesn't get elected at all, nothing changes.
