The background is that The Exile was a satirical newspaper in Russia mostly in the 90s that made fun of Yeltsin and the oligarchs and the American expats who came over to turn the country into a neoliberal hellhole. They did stuff like have Taibbi throw a pie filled with horse semen at a member of the Duma. John Dolan was their poetry columnist and wrote another column as a barely fake personality named Gary Brecher, the War Nerd, a southern California conservative who read too many Janes books.

Ames and Taibbi wrote a book version of The Exile which was mostly satirical stuff about how much expats suck. Part of the book rips off the second half of Fear and Loathing and describes an episode where they rape a child prostitute and force her to have an abortion. The book also includes obviously fake quotes from the US ambassador saying he'd like to kill every American in Russia, among other things, but the front page where they list the ISBN info and other stuff included a note from the publisher labelling the whole thing as non-fiction.

Since its publication, the parts of the book with the rape thing have been taken out of context to attack Taibbi and Ames, most recently on the day before Taibbi's book tour started. The writing really is gross and Taibbi has apologized for it while blaming Ames for writing it. Ames has defended the whole thing as satire. So that's the whole backstory and you can decide whether to care about any of it.

I did a class on criminal justice (which means I think I'm more qualified a lawyer than most of the resistance) with a black professor, and at one point we were talking about biases in juries and all. Naturally some white dude was all 'well don't a lot of black people just assume black people are innocent, like a lot believe OJ is innocent still' and the guy just laughs and says 'no he for sure did it, we were just happy for once the courts had to follow actual due process and couldn't just point at a large black man and say 'well come on, he clearly did it'. It actually led to a pretty good talk about the prosecutor's actual job vs what most actually do and talking about cases where people lost slam dunk cases because they failed to prove their case beyond just going 'come on, we all know'.

It's really a shame how much crime shows hosed up people's view of the law because yea there's tons of cases where you should 'celebrate' someone getting off even if we all know they did it because it's actually probably way worse for society to have a justice system where people can just wink knowingly at the jury than it is to have OJ Simpson doing his dumbass sports memorabilia scams and all.

First of all you need to get out there and vote for Bernie in the primary and the general, it absolutely will matter in South Dakota.

Second of all, the positions Obama ran on were a lot better than Biden, Harris, or Clinton. He backtracked on all of them because he wasn't genuinely committed to making them happen. The only candidate who is, in my mind, the slightest bit believable in terms of doing what they've said they will is Bernard Sanders.
