The only two movies about politics worth watching are Dave and Head of State. The former because it's laughable how they handle everything politics-related and the latter because it has a bit where his opponent runs an ad stating that Chris Rock loves cancer which gets people to run him out of a folksy diner.

By the way what are some good comedy podcasts that don't try too hard?

I'm sure you already have an opinion on the McElroys, but My Brother, My Brother, and Me is a good balance for when I just listened to three hours of This is Hell to catch up for the week.

The McElroy Brothers would be better on Street Fight Radio than on Chapo given that SFR doesn't require either a lot of knowledge on academical matters and requirement of having to drill thru several layers of irony. (Also folk thinking that the Chapos would eat them alive are forgetting the interview with someone who praised The Federalist and like the David Hayter interview, even if that was on another podcast.)

Heck, that's what I show to folk when they ask me for something that has the same politics but doesn't have weird jokes about autism.

SFR with the McElroys would be great, they would spend 10 minutes talking about wearing a mustard shirt in public then 50 minutes on modern treasure hunts. Every time I think about introducing people to SFR though I stop because I know they would turn it off as soon as flat earth came up. I usually look for a good episode of DYA or This is Hell to recommend as a good jumping off point for folks.

It's painful to think of re-listening to their stuff from this time last year. The episodes right before the conventions especially would probably kill me.

The retard and autism stuff, the fact they have poor representation (Amber does work, but she's one person, and they don't often have minority guests). It's all stuff like that where the concerns/complaints are legitimate but they're not gonna stop me from listening. Fortunately there are other sources of leftist discussion so you don't have to get angry at them for being three white guys with an amazingly white podcast name forever.

I do wish they'd change the name, but I'm not pushing real hard on that

It's not like there was a casting call and auditions for the role of Host of Chapo Trap House. Felix, Matt, and Will were on an episode of Street Fight together and realized they had good chemistry. Brendan volunteered to be their producer, and Amber was their friend who let them record at her apartment. Complaining about the representation on Chapo is basically complaining that Will personally doesn't have enough black friends.

Chapo is still young, but it isn't brand-new or tiny. I've been listening since May last year, I'm aware of how it started, but they're large enough to be actively seeking more people to speak with that aren't white dudes. The episodes on Mexican students being disappeared and Nike feminism are both fantastic and I would love for them to do more stuff like that. I'm not saying for a second that "recent episodes are poo poo because they don't have black women replacing Will and Felix" but they're going through growing pains transitioning from a trio of dudes using youtube to record their opinions to one of the largest podcasts in the world.

Re: what would it look like if I was pushing for them to change their name. I was really just noting that I wish it was different, as someone asked what criticisms people had. It's not really material so I put it in spoilers. I promise if I cared enough to do anything it would probably be to send felix dms of my feet with a note that says "change your podcast name to get more."

To continue hijacking this thread because I don't want to work: My sister earnestly believes Hillary was going to save us. She was going to sweep in and implement a good healthcare program, balance the budget, and break the republican party. She was going to use technology to make our lives better, and her extensive experience in politics would get everything done perfectly. My sister lives in DC and, exactly like they say in the podcast, loves rules and loves for everything to be neat and orderly. She's a good person, she just doesn't quite understand that capitalism is the cause of, but not the solution to, many of lifes problems.

Street Fight (thread here), This is hell, and Delete your account are all good. Though if you get depressed after listening to too much TiH and DYA don't blame me. I listen to a bunch of other stuff because I farm spreadsheets, but Merrit K puts out Woodland Secrets which is a palate cleanser after heavier stuff. She basically just talks with someone about whatever comes up, it's meandering but good. If you like nerdier stuff, Monster in my Podcast is also very light, two people going through old monster manual entries in DnD, episodes are less than 8 minutes always.

To explain verit:

Imagine you're sitting at the dinner table with your dad and you're arguing about some very important fact (whether Trump really called Mexicans rapists, Bernie is Jewish, Chapo is Volcel, etc) so you whip out your phone and show him the veritt of some quote that proves your point and your defeated father accepts that you were right about everything.

Further evidence in the newest episode for my theory that the only book Felix has read is Le Miserables and he thinks all books are like that. The verit code he gave ended in 24601, so he probably had to see the play as a kid with his parents, then they gave him the book.
