In the beginning, it justifies his conscious heel-turn. I think you are correct. The whole point of the first part of the show is demonstrating that Walt is unsuccessful/unfulfilled with his life. She is definitely not meant to be portrayed as a perfect June Cleaver housewife. I think a lot of the ire that the character of Skylar receives also has to do with the "resting bitch face" that people claim Anna Gunn has.
