One thing I really appreciate about the King's Bounty games is that as the series progresses they abandon all semblance of taking things seriously.

which honestly seems like Heroes took the opposite approach, or at least 4 and 5 weren't as fun and I stopped playing after 5. Don't know if it continued being too serious or not

Unfortunately, you're right on the money. The writing disappeared further and further up its own rear end in a top hat, where it installed a very large stick.

Higher Magic; so good that they nerfed it in later games and it still broke the game.

The animation quality extends to the overworld too. All of the environments have just a ton of little details that makes the whole thing move when you're around.

Well that's an easy solution. Play more undead. Playing more undead is never a bad idea. Demons are also very good, and get along fine with them.

Or, more conveniently, play a Paladin. Then you can take the Tolerance skill, and your units will oddly enough get along no matter how unholy some of them are. They're like mages, except you get to cast things other than direct damage spells and summons :P

Nothing but nothing is worth giving up Higher Magic.

Does every powerful item have its own hangups that way, or only the real heavy hitters?

Pretty much all of them have morale, some of them have more going on than others.

It's hilarious that the most powerful tool in your army is lots and lots of skeletons with crappy bows that are probably falling apart.

Higher Magic 3 will basically carry you through the game. Magic is crazy powerful in the first game, and even nerfs throughout the others still just brought it to par with the other trees.
