I wonder how much Cody's tepid indie run can be attributed to him coming up in the WWE system, where he was never trained to do more than the milquetoast, cookie-cutter style they push on everybody. I'm not surprised he's floundering in environments that demand a more dynamic, energetic type of wrestling.

Well I think you can attribute the lackluster Cody stuff due to him not really spending any time anywhere. He is having one or two off matches everywhere. No booker in their right mind is going to throw a guy that might only do 2 or 3 matches for you into a real storyline. When/if he sticks around somewhere longer term then we will likely see some good stuff, although it is looking like he might be going to act full time in the near future.

Yeah, this is also true. He's got a bucket list of guys he wants to wrestle, and he's dead-set on completing that list, so he keeps hopping from promotion to promotion with no obvious kayfabe reason for why he's fighting these guys. Add on top my previous concerns about his vanilla style, and ... yeah, a lot of not-good matches stacked in a row.

NXT tapings are happening tonight. Here's what happened so far.

quote:

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford over Adrian Jaoude & Cezar Bononi in the pre-show dark match.

A video is played of Billie Kay & Peyton Royce attacking Asuka in the parking lot before the show.

Billie Kay & Peyton Royce over Macey Estrella & Sarah “Crazy Mary Dobson” Bridges.

Post-match, the Icons claim to be the most dominant force in the women’s division and say the title belongs to them. Asuka runs in (presumably to dispute this and avenge her earlier beating) and gets beaten down, but Nikki Cross makes the save...

...and after clearing the ring of Kay & Royce, Cross attacks Asuka herself!

Elias Samson over Jonathan Cruz (of Los Ben Dejos fame).

Andrade “Cien” Almas over Oney Lorcan. Post-match, Almas is interviewed and answers heatedly in Spanish.

#DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) (c) over the Revival (Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson) to retain the NXT Tag Team Championship, so they’re doing a fresh version of that tonight.

Post-match, the Authors of Pain jump #DIY and lay them out.

Nikki Cross over Kennadi Brink.

Roderick Strong over Steve Cutler. Roddy has new music, it seems. (Here’s hoping it’s an appropriately Jimmy Hart version of End of Heartache, eh?)

Post-match, Roddy cut a promo calling Almas out, saying he doesn’t care what Almas has to say, he’s here for the NXT Championship.

Tye Dillinger out to cut a promo. He says he ended 2016 with a huge question mark and there’s only so many times you can let the people down. He doesn’t know if he has it in him anymore to be the Perfect 10.

Enter SAnitY. Eric Young says Tye never had it, but with some guidance and a helping hand, maybe he could have everything. Alexander Wolfe offers him a jacket, but Tye throws it to the ground. EY continues pitching him on it, saying that sometimes the right thing feels wrong and that he isn’t asking.

Tye lays EY out but Damo comes out of the crowd and spears him! He follows with Ulster Plantation and accepts the jacket. Damo has joined SAnitY!

Anyway here's the rest of the taping

quote:

Ember Moon over Liv Morgan.

Contract signing for Bobby Roode vs. Shinsuke Nakamura now. Roode starts off by downplaying Nakamura’s career accomplishments, but puts over his theme song. Nakamura, and this seems to be factual, says he likes Bobby because he looks like a Shiba Inu dog. He is a weird dude, Shinsuke.

Aliyah over Mandy Rose.

No Way Jose over Kona Reeves. Post-match, Elias Samson comes down to interrupt Jose’s celebration with a song.

Eric Young over Chris Atkins. After, EY tells Tye he made his choice, and so Dillinger will be wrestling someone from SAnitY at TakeOver: San Antonio.

TM-61 (Nick Miller & Shane Thorne) over The Revival (Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson), but the Revival laid a beating on the Australians after.

William Regal comes out to confirm that the NXT Women’s Championship match at TakeOver: San Antonio will be a four-way match, with Asuka defending against Billie Kay, Nikki Cross, and Peyton Royce. Kay and Royce come out to address this decision, and Nikki follows. Asuka attacks the Icons, she and Nikki have a stare-down before finishing off the Icons together, going back to staring at each other, and fighting off a bunch of security guards. Asuka throws a knockout kick at Cross and starts to leave, but Nikki wakes up and plants her with a dive to the outside.

Shinsuke Nakamura & Tajiri over Bobby Roode & Samoa Joe, presumably a dark match to finish out the taping.

CHRIS HERO IS HERE! Alas, his tron says Kassius Ohno once again. He comes out wearing a suit, heads in the ring, shows Nakamura his elbow, and leaves.

Meanwhile, Hero revives his career as one of the hottest indy workers on the planet, WWE convinces him to come back, and ... they're sticking with the same bad WWE name he had before. They have random C-listers using their indy names on 205 Live, why not do the same courtesy with Hero?

It's really a no-win situation for everyone involved. If Kalisto/Crews win, who cares, it's just Dolph and they had the 2-1 advantage. If Dolph wins, the other guys are even bigger geeks for losing with a 2-1 advantage.

This whole feud was a bad idea from the start. Dolph isn't getting any heel heat, because the guys he's feuding with don't have any face heat. If they were hoping that this would elevate Kalisto and Crews, well, they must be disappointed by now.

When Neville turned heel, he changed his entire character, entrance and moveset, because he's loving smart and knows how to work crowds for heel heat.

Dolph turned heel, kept the same entrance and moveset, and is basically the same loser geek he was before, except he 's losing matches as a heel instead of a face now. Nothing else has changed about the character, and big surprise, nobody gives a poo poo about him.

Here's the full NXT taping spoilers

quote:

Heidi Lovelace (now billed as Ruby Riot) over Kimber Lee, presumably the opening dark match.
Eric Young cuts a promo from the tron, saying that Tye Dillinger shouldn’t get his friends involved, and they’ll do it one on one.
Elias Samson comes out to sing a song and is interrupted by Kassius Ohno. Ohno says the Drifter thing isn’t working out and Samson counters that Ohno in NXT won’t work out, the same as last time. Ohno then challenges him to a Loser Leaves NXT match later tonight!
Eric Young vs. Tye Dillinger is set to begin, but as the match is about to start, Sanity drag a beaten-down Roderick Strong out. Tye and No Way Jose try to help their pal out but just eat a beatdown themselves and we don’t get the match.
Andrade “Cien” Almas over HoHo Lun.
Kassius Ohno over Elias Samson in a Loser Leaves NXT Match. The Drifter must finally drift away! Also, Ohno smashes the guitar for good measure. Who’s your Hero, indeed.
Ember Moon over Billie Kay. After the match, trainers spend time checking Billie, so there’s concern she may have suffered an injury. She does get to her feet by herself, but the trainers help her to the back.
Ealy Brothers (Gabriel & Uriel Ealy) vs. the Revival (Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson) is scheduled to happen next, but the Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar) show up and destroy the twins, leading the Revival to head for the hills.
Heavy Machinery (Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight) over Johnny Vandal & QT Marshall.
Nikki Cross over Macey Estrella. After the match, No Way Jose and Tye Dillinger ran down to try and beat the SAnitY men down, but they get overwhelmed.
Andrade “Cien” Almas over Oney Lorcan.
Asuka over Priscilla Zuniga, better known as indie wrestler Angel Rose. Before the match, Asuka said that Ember Moon would suffer the same fate, and then made a point of really punishing the newcomer.
The Ealy Brothers are back out and they call the Authors of Pain down. The Authors accept the challenge and win the match handily.
After the match, Paul Ellering says that the Revival are the next name in his Book of Pain. This brings #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) down. They say they can beat the Authors and only the Revival stopped them from doing so. This, in turn, brings out the Revival. The Revival say they sat San Antonio out but they’re not doing that again. So William Regal comes down and makes it official, we have a three-way elimination match for the NXT Tag Team Championship at TakeOver: Orlando.
No Way Jose, Roderick Strong, & Tye Dillinger vs. SAnitY (Alexander Wolfe, Eric Young, & Killian Dain) goes to a no contest when the referee loses control and decides to just throw it out. Ruby Riot then runs down to even the odds vis-a-vis Nikki Cross! Babyfaces then manage to fight SAnitY off for once.
Dash Wilder over Akam and Johnny Gargano. Dash and Dawson hit the bricks mid-match only to come back and steal the win after Akam had destroyed Gargano, with Dawson holding the Author’s feet to keep him down.
Bobby Roode (c) over Kassius Ohno to retain the NXT Championship.
Shinsuke Nakamura over TJ Perkins. After the match, Bobby Roode came down to tell the former champ that the show’s over and it’s time to go. When Nakamura refused to leave, Andrade “Cien” Almas came out to put the boots to him and Roode joined in. They beat him down until Finn Balor made the save!
Finn, after running the heels off, says he’s not medically cleared, but he’ll be back soon enough for what’s his. He and Shinsuke celebrate in the ring to close the tapings out.

Heavy Machinery won a match!

NXT tapings

quote:

— Dark Match: Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins defeated Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli.

— There is reportedly a new intro video and theme song for NXT. RIP lasers, let’s hope.

1. Aleister Black defeated Corey Hollis. Black used the same “rise from the dead” entrance he used at TakeOver. He got the win by pinfall after hitting the Black Mass (spinning kick).

— Tye Dillinger gave a backstage interview. He said he’s very happy to be on Smackdown, but he has unfinished business with Eric Young. He challenged Young to a steel cage match “next week.”

2. #DIY defeated Dylan Miley and Michael Richard Blaze. Gargano and Ciampa won via pinfall after hitting Meet in the Middle. After the match, Miley beat down his own partner out of frustration.

3. Ruby Riot defeated Kimberly Frankele. Riot’s opponent was Kimber Lee wrestling under her real name. Nikki Cross came out during the match to distract Riot and allow Frankele to take over, but Riot still picked up the win and stared down Cross afterward.

4. Andrade “Cien” Almas defeated Danny Burch. Almas won with the hammerlock DDT.

5. Drew McIntyre defeated Oney Lorcan. This was McIntyre’s return match. He got the pin after hitting a running big boot that reportedly busted Lorcan open.

— After the match, McIntyre cut a promo saying he could have gone to Raw or Smackdown, but he wanted to come to NXT. He’s here for the NXT Championship, and he’s willing to run through everyone on the roster to get it.

— Shinsuke Nakamura came out to address the crowd. He said one year ago, he came to NXT because he wanted to prove himself against the best in the world. He said NXT is its own brand, and that he will always be NXT because “we are NXT.” The entire roster came to the stage and gave him a standing ovation, including Triple H and Finn Bálor. Nakamura ran around the arena filming the crowd on his phone as his theme played.

6. The Authors of Pain defeated Kassius Ohno and Roderick Strong. The Authors pinned Ohno after hitting him with The Last Chapter.

7. Jeet Rama defeated John Skyler. This may or may not have been a dark match. Jeet won with a suplex into a side slam.

— Bobby Roode came out for a promo and took credit for selling out the Amway Center. He’s sick of the sendoff Nakamura got, because he’s the champ and this is his company. You can either be part of his NXT or get lost. He was interrupted by Hideo Itami, who got into the ring and got in Roode’s face. Hideo slapped Roode and Roode took his jacket off, but Itami hit him with the Go 2 Sleep. Itami picked up the belt, then threw it at Roode and left the ring.

8. WWE United Kingdom Championship Match: Tyler Bate (c) defeated Jack Gallagher. Pete Dunne, Mark Andrews, Wolfgang, and Trent Seven were at ringside for the match. Bate hit the Tyler Driver 97 for the win.

9. Liv Morgan and Aliyah defeated Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. Aliyah got a rollup pin to give her team the victory.

— Nikki Cross asked Ruby Riot to come out, and said they can be friends. Ruby came out and the two women brawled until they were separated by officials.

10. Drew McIntyre defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas. McIntyre again got the pin after the running kick.

11. Aleister Black defeated Kona Reeves. Black won with the Black Mass.

— Ruby Riot came to the ring for a match, but as she entered the ring, she was attacked from behind by Nikki Cross. The two brawled again and Ruby gave Nikki a suplex onto the ramp. They are once again separated by officials, who carried Nikki away.

12. Steel Cage Match: Tye Dillinger defeated Eric Young. Dillinger won by escaping the cage. Dillinger celebrated with Ohno, Strong, and Riot after the match, and gave the crowd a farewell speech. The crowd chanted “THANK YOU TYE” for him. He told Eric Young that he and SAnitY are even now, and he told the NXT crowd that he would never have made the Smackdown roster if it weren’t for them.

KENTA owns and I hope to see at least one strong NXT run from him, but his body just seems to be totally broken down these days. Even Nakamura managed to make it to the main roster unscathed, while Hideo Itami kinda feels like a forgotten man.
