Well it seems I'm in the minority but I'm not really digging this at all. The opening was terrible. The new theme song is awful. The whole fake band thing is dumb. The new voice actors for the robots are terrible and plain. The riffs are bad, both in content and even the timing is off. The host is awful. The new mads are awful.

It's a good thing I didn't back this poo poo and that it's free on Netflix.

Ok, so I have an example of the problems I have with the riffing. In Avalanche (about 40 minutes in) a helicopter makes a landing. They sing the MASH theme since the shot is reminiscent of that. While someone is still doing the theme song, they start ANOTHER joke and have someone 'announce' the movie, similar to what Radar would do in MASH. Literally a nano-second later, they make ANOTHER joke about parking in a handicapped spot.

You've got 3 funny jokes for the same thing all in the span of like 20 seconds. Pick a joke and let it land. They're funny riffs but it's just too crammed in there. It happens a lot. They'll rattle off several jokes for one thing.

Also I think they should be cut a little slack given that the bulk of the new season was recorded in less than a month, too. In the old days they could basically spend a week per episode. They didn't have the luxury of time to do that in this case.

Maybe they shouldn't have done this new season then? It's pretty lovely to take in all that money and then rush out a mediocre product because of time constraints. Do it right or don't do it at all.

I live in a more rural area so I tend to see some of the same people at the live rifftrax. There's this family that is so loving awful. The kids don't shut up. The mom laughs like a loving hyena at EVERYTHING even if it's not funny. The dad tosses his own riffs out during the whole thing. I'm at the point where I'm willing to drive an hour to another theater for these things.

I saw it come up in the RiffTrax FB group and I've never gotten this weird blanket 'skits on Comedy Central were good, SyFy skits were bad.' Those people must have never seen The Trial of Mike Nelson. (Or many others, but I watched that one recently and found it hysterical.)

If you can find some older interviews with the MST3K crew, this was absolutely the feedback they got. Sci-fi channel forced them to have an ongoing 'story' with the skits. There were a lot of bad ones. Ancient Rome, the weird 'kids' in a bunch of them, and a couple others.

Corman also gave Francis Ford Coppola his big break. Coppola, aside from directing some of the greatest American films also helped other directors get their start, including George Lucas. Corman's stuff is also where James Cameron, Joe Dante, and Jonathan Demme got their start.

If you're a fan of MST3K and film you absolutely need to watch the Corman documentary Corman's World.

It's really fuckin good. Some great interviews including Jack Nicholson, which was the standout for me.

It's a shame Corman's recent stuff is all basic cable Syfy poo poo.
