I just finished watching Fargo Season 1, and not only is it a darn fine piece of TV lemme tell ya, but it also cleared up an MST3K reference I didn't originally get in "Red Zone Cuba".

The reference in question was when Servo jokes about the "Cuba/Bemidji Border" and I had no idea what or where "Bemidji" was...until watching Fargo Season 1, much of which is set in the aforementioned Minnesota town (it's also on a lake, which is why Servo made the quip, because the scenes supposedly showing the team of "commandos" "invading" "Cuba" featured them rowing on the distinctly placid waters of a lake).

MST3K: the gift that just keeps on giving. :v:

The thing that really bugs me about Riding with Death is that someone liked Critter enough to bring him back for another episode. Uh, I mean the back half of the movie.

I'm more perturbed that Sam, who supposedly obtained a law degree from Harvard Law School, was the best choice to go on an underwater salvage mission. And that he somehow managed to fit in "learn to drive a big rig" and "welding" classes somewhere in there, too.

I think The Sinister Urge is the best MST3K "moral panic" film, partly because of its' laughable look into the inner workings of porn ("he's the kindly old pornographer"), and partly because of the two lazy-rear end cops investigating the whole thing ("let's rest a while").

The Ministry song "So What" has a bunch of samples from The Violent Years.

Back in the early 1990s, that was one of my favorite songs, so I was pretty much floored when I saw "The Violent Years" on MST3K a few years later when it got to the judge's speech near the end, since the song uses a huge portion of it throughout. Prior to that I had no idea it was originally from an Ed Wood movie.

It wasn't just mocking the "Agent for HARM" theme; they were actually riffing on the James Bond theme, which is understandable given that this supposed spy movie from the 1960s (during the height of Bond movie popularity) was full of boring mundane things.

So I just finished watching the new MST episodes on Netflix (aside from the Xmas one, which I will save for the appropriate time of year). Overall I'd say I enjoyed them quite a bit. It wasn't a perfect season, but I attribute that to new cast + accelerated shooting schedule. If Netflix renews them for more episodes (here's hoping), I'm sure they'll find their feet much like the original cast did over time.

Probably my favorite episodes were Warriors of the Lost World I & II, mainly because they both brought back fond memories of the big D&D/fantasy boom when I was a kid in the 1980s.

And really, any season that has not one but two movies featuring Caroline Munro is automatically a winner in my book. :quagmire:

Shout Factory TV also has an on demand channel on Amazon Prime that runs about $2.99/mo. Haven't done that one so not sure how deep the MST3K library is for that. Plus I think they still play commercials.

I can confirm that the Amazon Prime Shout Factory channel has a fairly decent MST3k selection (it's basically most if not all the stuff that's available to purchase in the boxed sets), and also does not play commercials when you are watching episodes.

On a related note, there's also a fair bit of Rifftrax movies available on Prime Video now, too. They're part of the Prime subscription IIRC, so you shouldn't need to have a subscription to an additional channel to watch them.

This season is reminiscent of MST3k Season 2 in my view. That's the season where they were starting to really find their footing. It also had plenty of dud riffs and bad sketches, too. Along with stuff like Kevin-as-Servo laughing at the end of nearly every riff or joke no matter what. So in that regard, it's kind of unfair to expect this season (with several performers and writers who'd never done the whole movie-riffing thing before) to be on par with Season 4 or 5 or 8 or whatever in terms of quality.

Also I think they should be cut a little slack given that the bulk of the new season was recorded in less than a month, too. In the old days they could basically spend a week per episode. They didn't have the luxury of time to do that in this case.

Maybe they shouldn't have done this new season then? It's pretty lovely to take in all that money and then rush out a mediocre product because of time constraints. Do it right or don't do it at all.

I guess that depends on whether you believe the show's return was 100% funded by their Kickstarter; or, that the Kickstarter was just a way to show potential investors and networks (like Netflix) that there was definite interest in a revival of the show, and that said investors provided additional funding to get things done, and that they might then start pressuring Joel and company to do things ASAP for a quick turnaround on their investment. I know which one of the two possibilities I'd say is the more likely to have happened.

Or I dunno, maybe you're fine with production budgets just ballooning out of control, in which case I can only say that I haven't seen "Heaven's Gate" yet, Mr. Cimino. :v:

I had to work on Turkey Day so I didn't get to see the marathon or the announcement of Season 12, but I'm very glad that they are going to do another season. Season 11 definitely had some missteps and stumbles, but that's understandable given how quickly they had to shoot it and get it done, and you could see that there definitely was a lot of talent at work there and a genuine love for the show on the part of everyone involved. So as long as they get plenty of time to shoot Season 12 this time around, I think we'll all be happy campers. :)
