Speaking of which, I recently found out Miguel Ángel Fuentes is still kicking around the Mexican Telenovela circuit and will even show up in the occasional American production (Texas Rising, most recently), which kinda makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Spotting him just hanging around in the background as a random henchman is literally the only thing I remember about the movie Blow.

Maybe "The Gauntlet" means Kinga will be forcing Jonah to "binge-watch" all six movies from Season 12 in a row? There was always an implied break of at least a week between movies during the Joel/Mike era. It'd be the next step up from Deep Hurting or Hypno-Helio-Static-Stasis. Streaming makes the pain more efficient.

The first episode I ever saw was Red Zone Cuba. Although it made me a fan right away, I wouldn't recommend it to the uninitiated. I remember the cast and crew saying that Time of the Apes was a good entry point for a lot of people because the hook of a Japanese Planet of the Apes ripoff was easy for people to get into.

My personal recommendation for introducing people to the show is Bride of the Monster.

Thep-YOO-may-man.

I'm excited that this whole season is made up of movies from my lifetime, roughly. I've always loved the 70s/80s-era movies the most. It'll be so weird to see them do something from the Obama Administration, but time keeps on slippin.

The guy who played Road Rash in “Hobgoblins” was the hillbilly rapist Bruce Willis kills with a samurai sword in “Pulp Fiction.” Also the emcee at Club Scum went on to be one of the Fairly OddParents.

George “Superman” Reeves was in “Jungle Goddess.” Did anyone mention Caesar Romero yet?

Jean Claude Gosh Darn from “Future War” had a small part in “John Wick.”

Only made it to “Killer Fish” at this point, and even though I’m loving it so far, nothing to this point has topped “EARN THIS” from “Mac n Me.”

The seething contempt they would work up during the SciFi Channel seasons worked better at the time because getting angry at a movie was still something of a novelty. But now there's at least 600,000 dorks on YouTube screaming into the camera about how whatever movie was "an unmitigated execrable cinematic abortion-fail of Brobdingnagian proportions" or what have you. I'm cool with the Netflix era being a little kinder and gentler overall.

My S12 ranks:
Lords of the Deep
Mac & Me
Atlantic Rim
The Day Time Ended
Killer Fish
Ator

I don't know what it was about Lords of the Deep, everything about that one hit me in the right way.

Atlantic Rim is so obviously the first draft of a screenplay that I kind of love it. "What's something tough this general guy could say here? 'Get him on the horn,' have I used that already? Probably not. Oh good, another 'Top Chef' is on next, hopefully I'll be done with this script before the news. Hey Derek, do you remember if I said these monsters laid eggs? I think I did."

Sharknado has effort in it. It tried to be a thing. It tried to be a bad, silly thing, but it TRIED.

Atlantic Rim exists only to get money based off of name fuckery. There is no effort in it, no attempt to make anything work.

They could have made the robots look cool, but they didn't want to expend the effort. They could have tightened up the script, but that would take too much effort.

I'm convinced they used the same "cockpit" set for all three robots, just using one of those remote-control color-changing Christmas light strands from Target behind them.

I think the only way to actually see them 'in order' was first-run because the out of order thing started immediately after, with additional 'immediately losing the rights to the series' so some episodes weren't aired even twice. I feel like that happened with 'Revenge of the Creature.'

I think "Gorgo" was aired only once before rights issues kept it out of reruns for a long time. I want to say that it never even made it back on-air at Sci Fi until the show had been cancelled, but I could be wrong about that.

EDIT: Looking it up, apparently it aired twice on its premiere date, then never again.

My headcanon is that Donald Pleasance is the same character in Puma Man and Warrior of the Lost World. He finally takes over the world in the future because Puma Man sucks so bad. Then Fred Williamson helps him pull one over on the Paper Chase Guy because that guy sucks so bad, too. In short, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to suck so bad.

A small fraction of MST3K movies are actually unwatchable on their own. The show’s success is not in pointing at something and saying “That’s bad.” It’s in pointing at something and saying “That’s ridiculous.” It’s something an entire industry of YouTube “critics” hasn’t been able to figure out.

Also considering the policy of watching a movie in it's entirety before choosing it really makes me wonder how the hell did Beast of Yucca Flats make it past that process considering how boring and slow paced it is even in MST3K format

They had already done Skydivers and Red Zone Cuba, so maybe they felt obligated to complete the Coleman Francis cycle.
