Does any other movie exceed High School Big Shot in miserableness? It's made worse by the fact that the star died in a car crash and his body wasn't found for weeks afterward.

I watched this episode for the first time yesterday, and thought it was an honest attempt at a realistic space travel movie until they reach the moon and all the goofiness starts. So much mockable stuff in that movie, from the plainly visible set lights on the lunar surface to the only Asian member of the crew randomly being able to translate moon runes. But that overly earnest utopian sci-fi tone does make it rather likable.

The "invisible ray screen" on their helmets ranks up there with the fake telephone ring in Monster A-Go-Go.

There were a few episodes where the dome was clear so that people could see the movie through Tom's head, but for the most part they painted the theater puppet's head completely black for Tom as well.

Then there was this (thankfully) failed experiment:

An attempt to have Tom's head take up less space in the theater. Only used in Rocket Attack USA and Ring of Terror.

Same reason there's a new host. The show has always had a (gradually) changing cast. After all, none of the bots were their original voices by the end of the run, and of course the host and the mads were entirely different characters too. It's kind of like Saturday Night Live in that regard -- the players rotate in and out but the show continues. Joel has even put forth the idea that if the Sci-Fi Channel people hadn't canceled it, the show might be on its fifth or sixth "generation" of voices and characters by now. We've just had a bit of a hiatus, is all.

I wonder how they'll explain the new voices (if at all).

I got Volume XXXVII (w/bonus disc) today.

That leaves these to be released:

0201 Rocketship X-M
0212 Godzilla vs. Megalon (technically already released in Volume 10)
0213 Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

0309 The Amazing Colossal Man
0311 It Conquered the World

0416 Fire Maidens From Outer Space
0418 Attack of the The Eye Creatures

0601 Girls Town
0602 Invasion USA
0605 Colossus and the Headhunters
0618 High School Big Shot
0623 The Amazing Transparent Man

0807 Terror from the Year 5000
0809 I Was a Teenage Werewolf

0905 The Deadly Bees
0906 The Space Children
0913 Quest of the Delta Knights

1007 Track of the Moonbeast
1013 Diabolik

That would make five (maybe four if they pushed it) sets to go.

This Island Earth is the obvious choice for 'good' MST'ed movie, but I actually like Parts: The Clonus Horror a fair amount for what it sets out to do.

This Island Earth looks good, but has the usual 50s lack of real science going on. Cal talks about combining nuclear energy with electronics.

Alex Lewyt, president of Lewyt vacuum company, 1955 posted:

"Nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners will probably be a reality within ten years."

And Exter says that Cal and Roooooth are the leaders in their field in converting lead into uranium, or alchemy. Which the Metalunans are obviously incapable of doing.

Speaking of the Metalunans, they are in deep poo poo against their enemy and their shield is about to give out, but they send Exeter and company to Earth to set up an extensive lab and even hollow out a mountain (presumably to house their spaceship). They are recalled with days of Cal's arrival since things are going to hell on their home planet. Then the Metalunans talk about colonizing the Earth even though they only have hours to live.

Typical of most of the movies on MST3K, the idea is sound, but the execution is lacking.

A bunch of people have mentioned that MST3K: The Movie was their first intro to the show. It kind of amazes me that it found that much life on video. It ran in barely any theaters at all (apparently the studio was actively trying to bury it). We had to drive 30 miles to a theater because that was the only place that was showing it.

Was anyone else nerdy enough in 1995 (or 96 or whenever it was) to actually go chase it down in a theater?

I drove 225 miles (Savannah to Atlanta) to see it. There were probably 20 people in the audience.
