Basic Super Robot stuff, really. Infight, SP Regen, Attacker, E-Save and Guard all work. There are no morale+ skills here and MX is notorious as giving you few mooks, so Fighting Spirit should also be considered for those with high morale requirements.

The stat layout thing, in a way, reminds me of the problem with Fortegigas in Super Robot Wars D. In that, you could choose either Choppy Dude or Shooty Lady as your protagonist, and the other was your sub-protagonist. If you chose the Reals, then they each got GP-03esque units as their upgrades. If you chose the Supers, then your upgrade was that they combined into Fortegigas. Now here's the problem: the one you chose was the main pilot of Fortegigas, and Fortegigas's weapons were primarily melee. So if you chose Shooty Lady, she wound up driving a choppy robot.

Well, that and the fact that armor calculations were heavily borked in D, making any super robot a questionable investment.

Not that D wasn't awesome, because cca char on your side hell yes

And that was made possible through Roger Smith negotiations.

Which makes me wonder how Roger managed to appeal to Char's ego and get him to fully work with everyone.

Alright then so Infight and Attacker for Garmraid... what about Cerberus, is it the same?

I'm playing through MX Portable and there are a couple of tricky missions that can easily get you a game over if not careful, not sure if they are tricky on the PS2 version.

Yeah, only replace Infight and Guard with Gunfight and Predict. Taking a look at the Cerberus' (spoilers if you haven't watched every mech anime/SRW ever, I guess)eventual upgrade, it actually gains a lot of post-movement attacks and the stronger ones are melee oriented. So, depending on how patient you are, you CAN build Cerb Hugo with a melee focus in preparation to that - if so, Hit & Away isn't really necessary.

SP Regen, Attacker take priority, mind; after you get those for the Cerberus, decide what you want more of. In MXP, land of bloated HPs, endurance is always nice so EN Save would be useful but the extra damage of In/Gunfight could help if you can get it high enough.

Big Cerberus/Cerberus Ignite fan here. Ignite Pike is a really cool melee weapon that eventually becomes the Cerberus' main form of damage output. Cerberus Ignite can transform into a very long-ranged gunner form which Aqua pilots (and is really good at handling). Both forms have amazing theme songs. Garmreid keeps the same stupid song all game long.

I'm surprised to see all the love for the Dijeh SE-R. I mean, true, it's basically the only option if you intend to use all of the good Newtypes (keep in mind, this is a game in which the Hyaku Shiki is bad), but compared to the original Dijeh, it's kinda boring. Without the beam naginata, it's just not the same.

But, the ZZ representation is the first of many interesting quirks in this installment's design. My theory is that games like the Wonderswan titles/Impact, MX, and the early GBA games were made by a secondary team at Banpresto, while the main team worked on the Alpha series. The choices for pilots and units include some curveballs, like actually including Beecha, Mondo, and Elle, who by that point in the series were pretty much never used (because they weren't very good), and the Mega Rider, an oddball inclusion that really just provided fanservice. You might also notice that pretty much all of the franchise regulars are using different songs for their BGM than usual (EDIT: actually double-checking the updates whoops Grendizer and Zeta Gundam are coincidentally the biggest exceptions to this, but notice Judau in Space rather than Silent Voice or Anime Ja Nai). More subtly, you may notice that the level-up jingle is different from what's traditionally used, and enemy reinforcements aren't punctuated by a remix of Dreadful Visitor (these last couple traits are consistent across most of the games I'd attribute to the hypothetical second unit at Banpresto). Now, I don't think any of this stuff is bad, I just think it's interesting, and worth taking note of, for comparison with the rest of the series, which tends not to be quite so adventurous with its included series.

Oh, there's no mistaking it, there are indeed several teams at Banpresto, all with their own unique quirks/styles. The current breakdown is as such:

--Alpha team: The guys behind the Alpha games, as well as the Z games.
--OG team: The guys behind the Compact/Impact/MX games, who are now the people behind OG.
--First handheld team: Made Advance up until K, wherein the latter's failure led to internal changes.
--New handheld team: Brought on as fresh talent after K flopped; made L, UX, and BX.
--GC team: Made GC/XO, NEO, and OE. Their music staff are probably the biggest standouts, due to their remixes and more electronic sounds.

The OG team (the ones featured in this game) have one of the more easy to spot identifiers. The "bubble pop" effect for critical hits is perhaps their most noticeable fingerprint.

That stuff really bugs me when the theme they use is one of the other themes instead of the main theme, like Theme of Z instead of Mazinger Z, especially when they use the latter more than the former but suddenly use the former.

I'm pretty sure the MX music choices were because they were tired of the same Mazinger/Great/Getter/* Gundam/Raideen themes repeated ad nauseum and they wanted to shake it up. They use regular themes for the shows unique to this game, including a TON of Dendoh music.

This was the first time G Gundam units didn't have Flying in the Sky, either.

Actually, G Gundam used Trust you Forever in Impact rather than Flying in the Sky, which only ever appeared in SRW2G, F/F Final, A (but not A Portable), and R. The rest of the series used the frankly, unimpressive-in-comparison King of Hearts. So, this would be the second time to have a different track, I believe.

As for Zeta, Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete was extremely rarely used, only appearing in Alpha, Alpha Gaiden (only if you got the fairly easy secret to unlock Zeta's upgrade+Waverider Crash), and A (also not A Portable). MS in the Flash is by far the most common Zeta Gundam theme, unfortunately. I pretty much immediately try to find a better Gundam theme to give it when playing games with BGM select. Then again, UC Gundam is frequently shafted when it comes to BGM when ZZ and Victory Gundam aren't around, it's basically left with Main Theme or the lesser-used Segment III - Sally from CCA, which is great, but doesn't leave much variety.

EDIT: Oh, right, Flying in the Sky was also used in Shin SRW before being discarded forever.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

And here we are at the intermission menu – learn to use it because you’ll be here a lot. Here’s what every button does:
  • Pilot Status – basic list of your current guys
  • Pilot Training – spend PP (Pilot Points) earned in battle to buy Skills. We’ll go over this once I have enough to buy the good stuff
  • Pilot Exchange – reassign your guys to different units – usually this only applies to folks of the same series.
  • Unit Status – same as above, only for your mechs
  • Unit Upgrade – spend cash to improve your mechs’ stats and firepower
  • Unit Parts – equip items dropped by enemies for various boosts
  • Glossary – info on mechs and people.
  • Options
  • Save/Load menu
  • Proceed to next mission
On the right side, the DATA bit shows (top to bottom) your current money, the total turn count and stages cleared. Below that is your top ace, the person with the most kills… Beecha is actually tied with folks but, regardless, there is something wrong here.

When in the pilot exchange menu, simply select the pilot you want to use and, then, the unit you want them in. In this case, I’m kicking Mondo’s worthless rear end out of the Mega Rider for Iino who’s at least a decent support.

The unit upgrade menu will bring out a list of units for you to select. When you do, you’ll get two to three different options.
The first one is the upgrade screen for the mech itself:
  • HP
  • EN – expended by EN-consuming weapons and by flying around (1 EN per square moved, 5 EN per turn airborne)
  • Mobility – talked about it in the first update. A big factor in how well your unit will dodge
  • Armor – Self-explanatory; your Super Robots want this.

Next is the weapons’ upgrade menu and, unlike most games, weapon damage, accuracy and crit ratio are upgraded separately. At the very least the latter two are dirt cheap for a decent while. Damage upgrades are always a priority but save some change to boost the other two, especially for your more inaccurate guys.

Finally, an option only found in a paltry few games: Shields. As in, the shields your units use when triggering the Shield Defense skill.
While in most games triggering a shield block is a percentage, in here you’ll actually trigger it all the time… so long as your shield has enough charges. If you block and reduce incoming damage to 0, you keep your current charge, but it damage actually gets through, then you lose one.
If the shield charge empties out, you won’t be blocking anymore. Every bit you upgrade in here adds one charge, giving you more leeway.
This upgrade is especially good if you find units that combine both a barrier with a shield. The damage mitigation provided by those combined features is such that, more often than not, you’ll be nullifying all damage forever (especially if your guy is running Prevail).
These are also quite cheap, so you’ve no reason not to boost them a wee bit as a safety net.

So, I had no idea this was a thing but, apparently, NG+ also presents you with a bunch of EVERY SINGLE UNIT PART IN THE GAME (up to nine, says the wiki). I suppose that’s one way of making Beecha and co. usable: slap some Haros on them!
Turns out I’m having the last laugh here, thread! Mwahahahaha!

And that’s enough tinkering around in the intermission. Let’s get back to the Nahel Argama crew.

We find our folks some time later, with the Nahel Argama having just finished its descent onto Earth. Aqua’s glad to see that nothing bad happened while it was all going down. Leina asks what she thinks of the ship and, honestly, Aqua says it’s been a parade of surprises.
She did not expect the ship that fought so much during the Neo Zeon and Baam conflicts to be housing this many kids like her and the Purus. Or that those same kids would be the famous pilots of the Gundam Team. Mind, she tells Beecha that she doesn’t mean this is a bad way – she’s impressed that they managed to be so successful despite their young age.
The kids tell her that they weren’t looking to "be successful" or to fight just for kicks. Everything that happened – including them getting on this ship and into those battles – was a result of a long and convoluted chain of events. Aqua understands that but, whatever their reasons, they pulled through and survived. That’s deserving of a pat on the back in her eyes.

Maybe to a soldier but Beecha isn’t really interested in a career in the military. Leina sighs that this is all due to how crazy things are with this world – hopefully, once the war really ends, they’ll be able to go back to their peaceful lives.
Aqua mulls of how different their mindset is from hers… but, then again, these kids shouldn’t really be fighting. Rather, they’re at an age where they should just be in school.
“But never mind that. I wanna ask you something, Aqua… Is Hugo your boyfriend?” Beecha cuts her train of thought short.

Iino gives him crap for just coming out and dropping this personal question on her but the kid doesn’t see the big deal. Regardless, Aqua is quick to say that they are just partners: “And, besides, I prefer men that are older than me.” Beecha seems a wee bit dejected at her answer.
Torres then gets on the P.A. and raises the combat level, telling all pilots to get to their units and be on standby to deploy. Looks like we’re almost joined up with the guys we’re escorting. Aqua asks if they know what kind of prototypes they’re freighting around, saying an interest in mechanical stuff comes with the job.
Well, Iino tells her what they know: the prototypes, nicknamed D Weapons, are actually called Dragonars and there are three different types. The standard close, long and medium-range split? Nope, the last one is actually tailored for electronic warfare.

Aqua can see how those diverse types would fit in nicely with so many different combat scenarios. Seems like the Federation is really making a push to build a next generation fighter for their main army. Actually, her assumption is wrong again. As Beecha explains, the Dragonars are a Giganos design, brought to the Federation by Professor Plato after he defected.
Obviously, the Giganos don’t like that which is why the Argama was assigned to keep them in one piece. From what Beecha’s gathered, it seems the Feds are already moving to use them in actual combat.
Aqua wonders what kind of pilots would be chosen to fly these state-of-the-art units… they must be the best of the best.

Back in the bridge, Misumaru is telling Bright that there’s been a slight change in the Argama’s orders: a request from the Federation GHQ.
The initial plan was for them to escort the D Weapons over to the Chongqing base in China but, now, they’re also being asked to transport this EVA-02 to the Yokosuka Harbor in Japan. Misumaru explains that the EVA’s transport fleet is travelling rather close to the D Weapons’, so the government’s head honchos figured the Argama could well escort both since we’re in the area.
Bright seems a bit miffed but Misumaru says that, unlike the sea-based carriers being used, the Nahel Argama has a lot more ease of movement. He figures that’s what caught NERV’s eye.

While this is just be a transport job, Bright asks what they’re to do if something happens… but, actually, something has already happened. Misumaru relates that, twelve hours ago, the EVA’s group got into a battle with an Angel. It was destroyed but not before the thing did catastrophic damage to the EVA’s transport vessel. It is currently stranded and, as such, it falls on us and the D Weapons’ haulers to lend a hand.
All in all, we’ll head to Japan first and then over to China.

And, on that subject, how are things in Japan? The three empires (Mycenae, Dinosaur, Devil) are done but, in their place, Angels and UFOs are stepping onto the stage. What about Tokyo Jupiter, that impenetrable barrier?
Same as the last ten-ish years, Misumaru reports: no movement. Still, he figures it’s only a matter of time. See, the folks at TERRA, the anti-MU federal institute, are setting up a major offensive. Are they actually going to try breaking into the barrier?
Indeed and everyone has been called to take part – Misumaru’s Space Corps included. Depending on how things look, Bright’s team may also be called over. He understands and, with that done, Misumaru apologizes for working the guy to the bone. Between the work during the postwar with the Baam and this mission, Bright hasn’t been given leave in a long while. By rights, Misumaru would have had the Nadesico B do all this but, as Bright’s aware, they’re busy with the Hisago Plan’s experiments.

Misumaru will have them join us once that’s done but, until then, the least he can do is send some added help to support the Nahel Argama: the fine men who fought the three empires in Japan.
Finally, Misumaru has noticed that Bright sent flowers for his late daughter; Bright noticed the anniversary of her death was close. Misumaru apologizes for causing Bright to concern himself with what’s his personal responsibility, though the captain says he needn’t feel that way.
While he never met the girl in person, he is well aware of the enormous impact she and her peers had in the war against the Jovians. The Earth Sphere would be in a far worse situation had she not help pave the way for the armistice. Misumaru figures she’d be very happy to hear such praise from the captain of the White Base and, with that, wishes him good fortune.

Location: NERV HQ

Gendou has just received some information and a hidden man is quite impressed: even with the D Weapons providing support, the EVA-02’s pilot managed to kill the Angel in thirty-six seconds after deploying. Way before the unit’s internal power ran out. She’s pretty good but, then again, that’s what Gendou expects her to be.
On the flipside, however, the Federation lost a carrier and a battleship and they’re sending the bill straight to the 3rd Division. Gendou has already brought this to “the committee” and figures it is a small price to pay if an Angel’s been defeated.
The man sees that everything’s been going according to schedule thus far… what happens next? That will depend on whether TERRA’s upcoming Operation Overlord is successful or not.

On that matter, the man says he’s bringing some new information regarding said operation. Gendou wants that information delivered ASAP and that’s why he had one Captain Katsuragi sent over to the carrier Aquapolis. She’ll handle bringing the EVA-02 over.
Once she’s there, the man is to come back to HQ ahead of the group, also bringing in a certain thing for Gendou…

Over by said carrier, Ben (in blue) introduces Misato Katsuragi to the captain, James C. Douglas. She introduces herself formally and says NERV HQ sent her over to oversee the transport of the EVA-02.
Douglas has heard of her and sees that she’s as beautiful as advertised. Misato is a bit surprised and asks who told them about her.

That’d be our mystery man, Kaji, and Misato is quite annoyed to see him here; he says he’s accompanying Asuka all the way from Germany. She is not happy about this, having already too much to worry about without dealing with him.
But, regardless, Misato has questions: was he the one who authorized the 02 to be sortied in the last battle? Kaji says it wasn’t really a matter of authorization – just an on-site decision made under exigent circumstances. And, then, some ships ended up destroyed.
Kaji tells her to take that up with the Angel as it’s not like any of them expected to come across something like that out here.

The pilot herself, Asuka, jumps in to say that Kaji isn’t to blame. It’s been a long time since Misato saw her and she’s impressed at how big she’s gotten. Mind, the girl herself says it’s not just her height that’s gotten more womanly… “Right, Kaji?”
Kaji quips that she’ll catch the eye of all the boys in Japan once they arrive but Asuka mumbles that she doesn’t care about any other guy other than him. Douglas cuts in, asking asks for Misato’s attention so he can debrief her on the ship’s status.

They’ve already brought the EVA-02 from the carrier “Over The Rainbow” into this one; now, they’re waiting the arrival of the Nahel Argama. Misato asks if there’s a problem to necessitate that and, indeed, Douglas reports of the info sent by the Argama that Giganos troops have descended into this region.
Misato already figures they’re chasing after the D Weapons and, from the looks of things, Douglas says there’s a very real risk of them reaching us before the Argama itself. What will they do if that happens?

: Then we will deploy the D Weapons… the Dragonars.
: Whaaat?! Those three numbskulls?!
: Who’re you calling a dumbskull?
: Numbskull, Kaine. Numbskull.
: Hey, whose side are you on?!
: Oh, come on. At least call us “Three Musketeers”, why don’t you?
: “Three Musketeers”? You guys barely qualify to be the “Three Stooges”!
: What a sharp tongue you have. And you have no idea how appalled I am to be tarred with the same brush as Kaine and Tap.
: What’s that supposed to mean, huh, Light?!
: What, you think you’re top dog around here? Well, I got a news flash for you.
: Shut your traps! You’re in the presence of your superior officers! Drop that bickering before I drop my foot on your asses!
: Um… Lt. Douglas, who are they?
: … They’re the Dragonar pilots I was talking about.
: Huh?!
: That’s the usual reaction… Still, there were special circumstances that brought this about.
: MANY special circumstances.
: Like, you could probably call it “dumb luck” or “coincidence” or something.
: More importantly, what the hell are you three doing here? I’m pretty sure you were supposed to be on standby aboard your units.
: Well, when we heard this beautiful officer had come aboard, we figured we needed to go and say “hi” before doing that.
: Yup. Please let us introduce ourselves, Sergeant.
: It’s gotta happen if we’re to keep the chain of command running smooth, see?
: “Chain of command”… You three never once gave a drat for any of that.
: Leave them. Airman 3rd class Wakaba, introduce yourself immediately and return to your post.
: Aye, aye, sir! Captain Katsuragi, I am airman 3rd class Kaine Wakaba and pilot of the Dragonar 1! It is a pleasure to meet you!
: Tap Oceano, airman 3rd class and pilot of the Dragonar 2!
: Airman 3rd class Light Newman, tasked with flying the Dragonar 3!
: Captain Misato Katsuragi. I’ll only be here until Japan but it’s a pleasure to meet you regardless.
: Such a brief stay… I could easily be with you for all eternity.
: Maybe some other time.

Asuka jumps in and asks if Misato brought the “socket” for her EVA. Indeed she has, much to the girl’s relief as it means she won’t need to rely on the Three Stooges. Kaine gets on her grill again but she sees no problem with calling a duck a duck.
Kaine fires back that those who call others stupid are the actual stupid ones and that, of course, pushes Asuka’s buttons. Light sighs at the children squabbling and asks Misato what that “socket” thing is. In short, it’s a part that’s needed to connect the Umbilical Cable to an EVA; with it, it can operate for far longer times than if it was running solely on its internal battery.
The thing looks like a legit power cord and it tells Light that, in that case, the EVAs can’t operate too far away from their power source. That’s a bit of a problem, Misato concedes, and Tap laughs at the big bad mech being like a dog on a leash.
Asuka doesn’t appreciate the comparison: “That mech is the first ever combat-oriented, true-to-form Evangelion! It will save the fate of mankind and it’s totally different from your dinky units!”

Kaine doesn’t agree, however. The Dragonars are a very necessary part of Earth’s defense against the Giganos. And, as such, the three of them decided to do whatever was necessary to bring them to Chongqing in order to bring this war to an end, even if just a bit faster. Kaine doesn’t really know what she’s about but they know this is serious business – not a competition.
Asuka blusters at getting told off, calling his “posturing” stupid, and Kaine sighs at how hostile the girl is – she could stand to take some lessons from Linda.

: Who’s Linda?
: Ah? Umm… she’s my… girlfriend…?
: Whaat? Since when?
: Well… She will be, after this is over.
: Hah, them’s some big words.
: What about you, then, hotshot? How’re things going with Rose?
: Eeh, they’re going. Bit by bit.
: So… who is Linda?
: A refugee from the Moon, who left there along with Rose. The five of us were together on the transport ship Idaho until it came down to Earth.
: Hm-hmm… And where is she now?
: Last I heard, she was in a refugee camp helping nurse people there.
: Aah, my sweet Linda… How I want to see you again…

The convo is interrupted when the alarm rings, signaling that the Giganos Metal Armors have arrived. Douglas sends the Dragonar pilots out to intercept and Light is eager to put on a good show of the D-Team’s skill for Misato.
Asuka wants to deploy along with them but Misato stops her, saying that the EVA has crap movement ratings in the water. While it could fight the flightless Angel, the flying Metal Armors will run circles around her.
Asuka doesn’t care and runs off anyway, leaving Misato in a panic. Kaji just sighs at her youthful gumption and tells Misato not to worry – she’ll be fine, with Kaine and the others around. He was looking when they fought the Angel and you know what? Those three are pretty good. He has a hard time believing they were civilians until not long ago.

And he can’t even chalk it up to the units’ specs or just luck. The only reason those three survived thus far is that they’re legitimately strong. Are they just like Amuro Ray, Misato asks?
Well, they aren’t Newtypes but one thing they all have in common is that none had training prior to taking up a mech. That tells Kaji that, simply put, they just have the right stuff for the job.
Isn’t that the same with the EVA-01’s pilot, Shinji Ikari? Hmm…

Mission 2 (Real Route) – D and E

: Alright! Bring it on, Giganos!
: Airman Wakaba, we’ve just received a transmission from the Nahel Argama. They are three minutes away from us – you three must hold the enemy at bay until then.
: Heh, just watch, Lt. We’ll kick the Giganos straight outta here even before those guys arrive.
: Hold on, Kaine. I don’t think it’s going to be that easy.
: Oho, what’s going on, Light? Getting cold feet?
: What happened to all that huffing and puffing you did for Cpt. Katsuragi?
: I just did a look-up on the incoming enemies’ data with the D-3… The Giganos’ Blue Hawk is there.
: What?!

: LCL Füllung. Anfang der Bewegung. Anfang des Nervenanschlusses. Auslöses von Links-kleidung. Synchro-start.
: Whoa, she’s sortieing too?
: And what kind of language was that…?
: German – she’s half-Japanese.
: Always quick with the intel, eh?
: Well, it is my job. Speaking of, how about we roll up our sleeves and get back to work?
: Do you hear me, Asuka? The EVA’s movement range is limited due to the umbilical cord, so focus on supporting the D-Team. Also—
: If the cable’s disconnected, I’ll only have three minutes-worth of energy, right? I know that much.
: Heads up, people! Here they come!

: Over there, Captain!
: Hm, the Dragonars are flying. When did they manage that?
: Ah, crap, it really is him. And he’s brought his boy band along.
: Didn’t think they’d follow us all the way down here… drat, these guys don’t know when to quit!
: Who are they?
: The Blue Hawk, ace pilot of the Giganos, and his groupies.
: “Blue Hawk”? But his thing is more violet than anything.
: My guess is “Violet Hawk” didn't sound as cool.
: Are we clear? Our targets are, first and foremost, the D Weapons. Do not bother engaging the carriers.
: Why not? NERV’s new weapon, the Evangelion, is aboard.
: And it might eventually threaten Giganos. We should take the chance to destroy it!
: “A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.” Our priority remains the D Weapons.
: Yes, sir!
: Forward, then. Engage!

Mission Objective: All enemies destroyed
Mission Failure: Any allied unit destroyed
Almost nothing to worry about here, though Maillot is quite powerful and accurate (while the Dragonars aren’t too beefy). Provided you take care around him, you’ll be fine.

Now, let’s take a look at our new buddies:

Evangelion Unit #02(Asuka Langley Souryu)
Pilot Skills:
  • Revenge – 20% extra damage during counterattack; that is, when you attack an enemy on their turn
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Gain (15)
  • Alert (10)
Mech Features:
  • A.T. Field – negates any damage below 4000, unless it is a barrier-piercing weapon
  • Umbilical Cable – unit restores all EN at the start of the turn, but can only move 10 spaces away from its connection point (either a power plant or battleship). Can be manually disconnected, whereupon the unit will lose 50 EN every turn and deactivate when EN reaches 0. The tether can be reconnected when adjacent to a connection point.
Asuka’s Voice Actress: Yuko Miyamura (other known works: Chun-Li in some Street Fighters, Larxene in Kingdom Hearts, Parfait in Knights of Ramune and some others)

Asuka’s meant as a legit offensive unit and the EVA-02 can surely fit the bill. A.T. Field is hilariously overpowered in this game, where only a handful of enemies (usually proper bosses) are actually good enough to pop it, so you can throw her right into the fray.
The Umbilical Cord should always be on, if possible, a ship that can trail close enough behind her. That EN refill keeps the barrier running and ten spaces is plenty (mind, on this mission Asuka is tethered to a stationary carrier, so that won’t fly).
Asuka as a pilot, though is… average, really. Her accuracy stat is downright horrid – ALL the ZZ kids beat her by quite a decent margin – but her attack stats are decent. Regardless, her unit is good (and gets better later) that you can easily find her a spot on the team, should you wish to.
Also, the accuracy stat could be like that to account for the EVA-exclusive Synchronization stat.

In essence, the sync is decided on launch by the pilot’s level and it affects the accuracy and evasion rate. Under 25%, and you take a 5% hit to both; between 26 and 99%, it follows the formula % = (Sync Rate/5) – 10, meaning the break-even point is 50%. At 100%, you get a flat 10% bonus to both rates.

Also, you can see where the cable’s tethered to and how far Asuka can move from the connection point. Blue is her move on this turn while red indicates the 10-tile limit.

But enough Evangelion – time for the real stars of this show!

Dragonar Unit 1 (Kaine Wakaba)
Pilot Skills:
  • ??? – the asterisk beside it means you can’t replace this
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Shield Defense L1
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Invincible (10)
  • Focus (15)
Kaine’s Voice Actor: Masami Kikuchi (other known works: Iino in ZZ, Tenchi in Tenchi Muyo, Keiichi in Ah! My Goddess and many others)

Oh, baby, I loved the Dragonar boys the second I heard their theme song. Yes, their series rips off a lot of the original Gundam but I don’t care!
Kaine is the melee attacker of the bunch and he does his job well. Melee stat is good, evasion is around a B+ and his ranged stat isn’t bad either, though the D-1 hasn’t much in that department. His unit has a shield for added survivability, good mobility and already comes with TWO combined attackers with Tap and Light, for some great stopping power.
Deploy him – deploy all the Dragonars – because they’ll only get better. By the endgame, Kaine will be a powerhouse.

Dragonar Unit 2 (Tap Oceano)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Iron Wall (30)
  • Strike (20)
Tap’s Voice Actor: Houchu Ohtsuka (other known works: Yazan in Z Gundam, Gates in Full Metal Panic, Beck in Big O and a truckload more.)

Tap is the “worst” of the Dragonars, though he’s still pretty good at what he does. And that is provide offensive and defensive support. Everything about him screams that he’s meant to be trailing someone, throwing support attacks and defending with his bulkier-than-most D-2 when push comes to shove.
His offensive stats are decent (ranged is his better one, of course) and his accuracy is actually pretty nice. Defense is also high for a Real Robot
Getting him Hit & Away ASAP will help him get more on the offense.

Dragonar Unit 3 (Light Newman)
Pilot Skills:
  • Counter L1 – sometimes attack first when an enemy tries doing so. Activation rate depends on the Skill stat and Counter level.
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Mech Features:
  • Repair Module
  • Jammer – nullifies any missile attacks (works on support defense)
  • EWAC (Strong) – provides a +30% boost to evasion and accuracy to anyone within a two tile radius. Also reveals enemy stats.
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Trust (30)
Light’s Voice Actor: Kenyuu Horiuchi (Jamil in Gundam X, Raiden in MGS, The Claw in Gun x Sword and a billion others)

Ohohohoo, Light is one of the best combat supporters in this game and that’s solely based on how awesome the D-3 is! Missile attacks are very common, so his Jammer and Support Defense combo is already cool but the gem is that EWAC. Light is one of the kings of A Portable because that free +30% boost is amazing. Light makes Focus-less units dodge reliably and Focus’d guys nigh untouchable.
The D-3 has jack for weapons but, screw it, it’s not meant to be attacking head-on. Light’s offensive stats are the worst of the Dragonar pilots but his Skill stat is through the roof, meaning he has a better chance of landing critical hits.

All in all, the Dragonars are actually a rare example of SRW pushing you towards keeping an actual battle formation. Kaine is obviously meant to lead the charge, with Tap at his back and Light hanging behind them to spread that EWAC. As Aqua said, there’s little they can’t do together – “Three Musketeers”, indeed.

Now that I am done gushing, let’s get to work. The EVA can attack just fine underwater but moving is a different story. As such, I’ll have Asuka hang on the carrier and go for the lone Gebai MAFFU in range.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcD01xBm5hE
Also, I absolutely despise “Decisive Battle” as a full-on battle BGM. Now, the PS2 MX wasn’t at the point where SRW allowed you to switch those things, so I’m stuck in the videos. Outside them, however, I’ll be using Asuka’s actual theme starting on mission 3. I rather like the movie version:

The Dragonars move forward but nothing else is close.

Enemy Phase!

Most Giganos mooks hang back but the closer ones attack the Dragonars.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTS8_5G4D-U
So, of course, after I spent time talking up the Dragonars the RNG sees fit to screw Kaine over.
It would’ve been a oneshot without the Gebai’s shield, though.

One more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uqaDyAvVZ4
And again… It’s gonna be one of those days.

Player Phase!

Asuka jumps in the water and blows away one of the weakened mooks. Light saunters onward, just in range to finish the last.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGklRCkuW38
Made a video because I really like the D-3’s spinning head-radar thing.

Kaine and Tap close in with him.

Enemy Phase!

Clever girl… Werner and Dan attack outside of Kaine’s range, while Karl guns for light.

: Today’s the end of the road for you, Dragonars!
: We’re not amateurs like before, guy! Come take a look!

: If anything, I’ll at least make sure to end you myself, Dragonars!
: Oho, the groupie’s surprisingly gung-ho.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIBImPSTDxA
And here’s the Jammer in action. Missiles can’t do jack against the D3!

: drat you, Dragonars! I’m paying you back in full for what you did!
: Shut it, groupie! It’s you folks who’re gonna pay for what you did to Chephov!
: Chephov? …Oh, the Giganos officer back at the research station?
: He tried stopping us from doing our mission, so we had to put him down!
: Oh, go to hell! You killed the old man just to add another highlight in your career!
: Watch this, Lt. Chephov! I’m bringing this guy down with everything you taught me!

Erm… maybe in a bit.

Player Phase!

: To all units – the Nahel Argama has arrived!
: Oh, yeah! The tables have turned now!

: All units, deploy! Support the D-Team and their fleet!

: They’ve caught up to us…
: Oh? Do I see the Gundam Team?
: They’re the folks who took down the Neo Zeon boss lady, yeah?
: Haman Karn, right.
: Heh, I wonder what kind of group they are.
: I bet they’re all a buncha hardasses like Sgt. Ben.
: Nah, I’m hoping for a surprise. How about a group of gorgeous ladies?
: So those are the Dragonars… the Giganos new weapons.
: Their pilots must be elite soldiers, so I think I’ll take in their combat data to study later… Though I don’t think Hugo cares about any of that.
: If you’ve the time to worry about others’ data, then you’d be better off keeping a closer eye on our engine.
: I-I know that!
: (Hrm… Am I that much of a bother to him?)
: (We’ll be at a disadvantage if we allow this to drag on…)
: All troops, prioritize immobilizing their group – focus fire on the Nahel Argama.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.
Maillot’s groupies will, indeed, make a beeline for the Argama while the boss man tries to take out the Dragonars. Let’s have both groups converge to simplify things.

Judau leads the charge.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf9noNbopzs
I finally found Arado!

Roux and Elle wreck another one.

And let’s see if I can’t get Hugo enough morale to use his strongest weapon.

…I’m still not used to accounting for that shield reduction.
Puru Two finishes the job.

Misato sees the wind turning in our favor after the Argama’s intervention… but where did Kaji go? He’s taking off on a small plane, saying he’s got stuff to deliver quick-like.
So, he bids her farewell and runs along, leaving a fuming Misato behind.

Just to show it off, I go and decided to clip the EVA-02’s umbilical cord. Now Asuka is no longer limited in movement range but will, as Misato said, run out of gas in three turns.
We gotta hurry!

With that in mind, it’s time for Werner to go.

: I see you three are still a bunch of Blue Hawk fanboys, eh?
: Bastard! You’ll pay for insulting us and the Captain with your life!

Werner being damaged by Light: “Attacking with the D3? Have you lost your mind?”
Jerk!

: However much firepower you have, I need but close the distance!
: Sorry, bud, but I’m gonna clip your wings way before you pull that off!

And then Kaine finishes the job.

Off goes Werner, swearing to be victorious NEXT TIME.

Enemy Phase!

As per Maillot’s orders, Dan and Karl go for the Argama and Roux. The trade goes highly in my favor.

Maillot himself seems to prioritize Kaine.

: Show me how much you’ve improved, Dragonar pilot!
: I’ve had enough with you hounding us all over the place! Give it up already!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZDv0KRhptg
And here’s the RNG double whammy: a low % hit connects AND crits!
Reset! :argh:

Oh, and Maillot took Werner’s item as well. I should have seen that coming…

Player Phase!

We’ll use Kaine to bait him closer; meanwhile, his two cronies need to go.

: Coming down all the way to the surface just to chase us? I gotta tip my hat to you folks.
: And it’s all because you refuse to surrender the Dragonars!

How about I surrender some bullets instead?

Karl ejects, crying out to Maillot.

Just a wee bit more morale for Hugo.

CAPTAAAAAAAAIN!!

Asuka (who’s only just now reaching the area) and the Dragonar guys all had stuff to say to these three. Here’s what we missed:

: Heh, what’s up, groupie? Came here to get your rear end kicked?
: Silence! I’ll see that that was the last bit of sass you’ll ever give anyone!

--

: You guys are as stubborn as a mule. Enough already!
: Shut your mouth! We only came here because you insisted on standing against us and the Captain!

--

: You’re the cornerstone of the D Weapons! Victory’ll be ours once you’re gone!
: Very well put, “ace”. Still, that’s all the more reason why I can’t let myself be taken out!

--

: I’ve no time for the Hawk’s little chicks!
: What?! She’s treating us like were novices?!

--

: We, of the Practice Squad, have been hand-picked as the best! It’s impossible for us to be defeated!
: That’s fine. I’ll just have to make that impossibility a reality!

--

: I’ll show you just how much of an advantage aerial attacks have when in Earth’s atmosphere!
: I don’t need to fly to swat down some bugs!

Karl drops a Booster, which Hugo’s picked up.

Fast forward a turn getting everyone in position and Maillot failing to connect against Kaine.
Here we go!

: This is the Evangelion? It wouldn’t be a bad idea to see just how strong it is…
: I don’t care if you’re the Giganos’ Hawk or Kite, you better not think you’re safe from me just because you’re flying!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCb4iSXxjSw
Here’s Asuka’s rifle and, more importantly, the A.T. Field laughing in the face of Maillot’s Tri-Reamed Multi Discharger.

: He’s the Giganos’ top ace, alright… That doesn’t mean I’m letting him bring me down, though!
: You’ve a fine spirit! However, you’ll see that it does not compensate the difference in our strength!

: This pilot… he’s not a Newtype but he’s still very good…!
: You’ve touched my mind, hm? But it is far too late – you will not escape!

: A gold MS…! That is Quattro Bajeena’s— rather, the Red Comet’s unit!
: Then I know this to be a worthy adversary!
: If I can bring down the Giganos’ ace, then that title’ll be mine! You’re going down!
: My Falguen will not fall for your idiotic aspirations!

: You’re too slow!
: H-hold on! You’re the one who’s too fast!

: His movements are…! I see I’ve found one whose skill was tempered by the fires of battle!
: Hey, I’ve just been doing what I can to survive all this mess!
: I dunno anything about this Blue Hawk business, but I’d really like if you just turned around and ran home!

: H-How is it this agile even in the atmosphere…?!
: Such is the might of the Metal Armor, pride of the Giganos! It is the blade that will crush the Federation!

: Uwah! This thing’s fast!
: This is a battlefield! If you’d complain about anything, do it for your own weakness!

: I won’t be beaten by anyone!
: What?! The Federation is sending even young girls into battle?!
: Underestimate me because I’m a kid and you’ll get more way more than you bargained for!

: That unit is not something the likes of you could use!
: Come again? I’m pretty much an expert with this thing, guy!

: I’m amazed you actually try to face me with such a unit!
: Sure, it’s not the best for fighting… but it more than makes up for it in style!

: So this is the prototype Karl’s team reported…
: The movements of that Metal Armor are so different from the others…! Is it because of the mech’s specs… or is the pilot simply that skilled?!
: Both. If you can’t get the engine stable enough to run in the blue, he'll crush us!
: I-I’ll get it done! I swear!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C_i_c5rQOk
Maillot runs off when under 30% HP, so we’ll show off the Dragonars’ combined D-Formation attack and follow it up with Hugo’s Terminus Cannon.

Maillot knows he can’t push this anymore and calls for a retreat.
Torres confirms all enemies dealt with and Bright orders everyone to stay on alert while the Argama heads over to the Aquapolis.

Maillot drops a High Performance Scope, which ups the accuracy of the equipped unit by 30.

We cut back to Kaji, who’s already made it to NERV HQ. Gendou wastes no time in asking for that new information he said he had on TERRA’s Operation Overlord.
As it turns out, Gendou’s feeling about it was right: while it may appear to be an offensive against the MU, TERRA’s main goal is to steal an OOPart (out-of-place artifact) and someone connected to the thing from them.
Does he mean the lost mechanical god? Kaji wonders aloud if the rumors he's heard about part of it being discovered already are true and Gendou says it’s his job to extract info like that from Bähbem.
Regardless, Kaji wonders why TERRA, having spent the last ten years not doing anything against Tokyo Jupiter, would do so now. Can it have something to do with the Angels’ appearance? Gendou thinks it’s only a coincidence.

Still, does Gendou think the committee will stay mum if TERRA succeeds in its theft? His answer is that both the emergence of Tokyo Jupiter and the Second Impact were predicted in advance, so the committee will simply adapt their plans accordingly and keep going.
Then, the only question will be whether to sit by and wait for the hands of the clock to turn, or to forcibly speed them up before their opponents do.

In any case, the results of Terra's operation will alter the process - much like the way the Angel’s attack on Unit 2’s fleet happened in a different location from what was predicted.
Granted, what the Angel was after is the thing in Kaji's briefcase, immobilized inside Bakelite but having already regenerated somewhat. It is very much alive.
“This is the cornerstone of the Human Instrumentality Project,” Kaji mulls.
Gendou takes a look and gets a sinister grin on his face: “Indeed… Adam, the first human.”

Saegusa reports it’ll be another hour until we arrive in the Yokosuka Harbor and Misato apologizes for all the trouble. All part of the job, Bright says. Still, she is honored to have the chance to meet the captain of the White Base but Bright says that’s all in the past.
Misato is curious as to where Amuro Ray could be but he’s currently away, tackling a different assignment. A shame but the convo is interrupted when Misumaru sends in another call.
The man sees that we’ve successfully rendezvoused with the D Weapons. Misato sneaks a peek at the commander of the Space Corps, remembering rumors of how this powerful man is said to have ties with Nergal Heavy Industries since even before the Lizard War.
Misumaru gets to the point: he’s just received an official request from Shirou Watari, TERRA’ director, to have the Nahel Argama team participate in Operation Overlord. This strikes neither of them as a surprise, really.

Details will be received from TERRA’s commander, Jin Kunugi, but it seems our job will be to provide support to the fighters who’ll be breaking into Tokyo Jupiter. We won’t need to traverse into the barrier ourselves. But, then, Douglas asks what’ll happen to the mission to transport the D Weapons to Chongqing?
That will need to be postponed until after Operation Overlord and, even then, said mission may further change depending on the result. And that’s not even taking into consideration these new aliens that have been showing up around Japan.

Delays were expected even before but, now, the absolute priority is Operation Overlord. Besides, from what Misumaru’s heard, the Federation is still getting things online and will need time before starting mass-production (Of the Dragonars, Misato wonders).
Douglas sees where this is going: the brass wants them out in the field, drawing the Giganos attention and buying them time to get everything ready. Indeed, and Bright sees a parallel with the One Year War.
Misumaru ponders how the Federation has been having many problems lately: the war with Neo Zeon and the Baamians left many chinks in the Space Corps’ armor, allowing the Giganos to initiate their campaign on Earth; meanwhile, the surface army’s reputation is in tatters face the Angel attacks. As such, Operation Overlord NEEDS to succeed.

Bright understands and sees that this is why the civilian Super Robots are being sent here – they’re just as experienced as Bright’s own men and women and GHQ is expecting a lot from everyone involved. Misamaru, for one, wishes they didn’t have to foist all these issues onto the Gundam and Super Robots as it strikes him as treating us like a bunch of handymen.
Of course, Bright is already used to having crises foisted on him and his crew.

Still, Misumaru is working on getting us some additional help by way of an apology: he’s put in a request for the folks at GEAR to support us.
Bright has heard of them, a research institution dedicated to developing defense systems to safeguard the Earth Sphere from alien invaders. He thought it had no forces of its own but Misumaru says that’s just how it appears on the surface. Regardless, we’ll have to ask GEAR’s Chief Shibuya for more info on that.
Between NERV, TERRA and GEAR, Bright sees that things are getting quite complicated and, inwardly, Misato is very impressed that Misumaru managed to get those guys considering cooperating with us. The rumors weren’t exaggerating his prowess, she sees.
Either way, they’re still getting things set up with GEAR but, if it goes through, they should be sending us some people soon.

And what about the EVA-02 and Cerberus? The EVA will still need to be delivered to the Yokosuka Harbor before the Argama gets in touch with TERRA, lest Misato and NERV give him crap (she thanks him for the consideration). As for the Cerberus, the army’s decided to keep it working here. Though it IS a valuable prototype, it seems they want it to gather more combat data.
With that done, Bright sets a course to Yokosuka and, then, they’ll meet with TERRA’s carrier: the Lydia Litvyak.

Over by the hanger, everyone’s expectations are dashed as they meet the Dragonar/Gundam pilots. Roux didn’t expect them to be a bunch of kids about their age.
Tap feels the same way, finding out that the Gundams, known for wrecking 50 Zakus with one swing of a hammer and killing 120 Doms in 3 minutes, have children as their pilots.
“Aah? Judau, can Gundams really do that?” Puru asks. “No, those stories are blown WAY out of proportion,” he answers. Still, Light figures they shouldn’t be too surprised as Amuro Ray was 15-16 years old when he piloted the very first one.
Kaine is all for getting along with his peers and exchange hearty handshakes with Judau.
Amid all the mirth, however, Aqua is strangely quiet. Hugo asks if the Dragonar pilots didn’t fit her mental image? They didn’t but what about Hugo? He says he was about their age when he first took the field, so it didn’t come as a surprise.

Light cuts in right then, eager to meet to meet the Cerberus pilots – especially Aqua.
Once introductions are done, Hugo admits that he was pretty impressed while watching them fight out there. He wouldn’t have expected fresh soldiers like them to be that good. Kaine and co thank him for the confidence boost and the guy’s praise extends to Judau and friends too. They have certainly shown that they made it this far due to their skill.
But never mind all that, what Kaine wants to know is what’s up with Aqua’s suit. “And there it is…” she groans inwardly and Roux explains that she needs it to manage her unit. “Uh-huh… Guess the Federation Army’s pretty stylish; Hugo’s clothes are a bit normal in comparison, though,” Tap quips.
Aqua seems a bit pensive at that “normal” bit but, regardless, it’s pretty obvious to Hugo that the local men have absolutely no problem with her getup. That doesn’t put Aqua at ease, of course.
When Hugo asks about Asuka, however, Kaine says she’s with Misato at the carrier – they’ll be leaving at Yokosuka. And, on that subject, Aqua wants to know how old the girl is.

Light heard she's fourteen and Aqua is gobsmacked. While she panics at another young pilot, Torres phones in and warns that the Super Robots are coming aboard – our new collaborators.
Puru is super excited to see a pair of UFOs flying in and Judau wonders if we’ve some Baam folks here. Next to them, Light sees a red robot: the famous Getter Robo. Kaine doesn’t know, so he tells of how it fought a bunch of lizards who sought to conquer the surface. Not Jovian Lizards, mind, but Dinosaurs.

Benkei and Hayato walk over, with Benkei impressed at how large the Nahel Argama is. Of course, it has to be if their bot is going to fit in. Kouji’s with them and Tap immediately recognizes the Mazinger’s pilot.
Kouji’s become a pretty famous guy as images of him fighting Dr. Hell and the Mycenae circulated the news but that also applies to the Getter team. If anything, Hayato hopes that staying here will get them all some much needed time away from the pains of fame.
Roux sees that they all seem to be around their age too, as Aqua mumbles nearby. Time for some introductions and when Kouji says he’s piloting the TFO, he also needs to explain to Tap that the Mazinger is currently in a museum.
He relates how he made the thing over in America and Roux likes it: the shape and color remind her of an Asshimar (Kouji isn't too keen on having it compared to a Titan mech). As for the bigger UFO, Kouji tells that it’s Duke’s.

Hayato opens introductions for the Getter Team, saying he pilots the Liger. Is that the red mech, Judau asks. No, that’s the Dragon as Benkei explains. Judau is confused, to which Michiru tells of how the Getter can interchange its parts in battle to assume three different shapes. The Liger for high-speed, ground-based combat, Benkei’s Poseidon for bench-warming action underwater and the Dragon for aerial combat.

So it’s kinda like if the Dragonars combined and switched forms to become the D-1 and D-2. Tap likes the idea of a combinable Dragonar but Light prefers three specialized machines as the realistic option. Michiru Saotome, Ryouma’s support, introduces herself just in time for the man to come over in person.
When Kouji asks, he says Daisuke is talking with our leaders right now (Ryouma will be joining him soon, too) and Kouji tells of him to the others, the pilot of the Grendizer.

: Um… Excuse me but I’d like to ask... How old is that man?
: Hmm… I’m not sure but I think he’s about twenty?
: Twenty…
: (Does… does this mean I’m the oldest one here?)

Well, Bright is older… but if you’re counting only pilots, then, yup!

Some time later, Torres confirms to Bright that the EVA-02 is already being dropped off. Meanwhile, Daisuke is filling them in on this new race of aliens bent on conquering Earth.
Douglas wonders how he knows about all this and Ryouma was actually wondering the same – Daisuke’s unit is also rather different from Kouji and Tetsuya’s Mazingers. Daisuke says he knows because his father, Dr. Umon, was investigating the UFOs. Douglas doesn’t seem convinced but also doesn’t press the issue.

Ben himself is more worried about this new alien menace showing up right on the verge of Operation Overlord and, on that matter, Bright asks if the Supers have any misgivings with helping in a federal operation. Ryouma says everyone is fine, focusing on doing what they can to help restore peace.
Douglas ponders if we’d be able to coexist with the Vegans as we did with the Baamians, prompting Daisuke to start ranting about how you cannot reason with those demons. Same thing he did on the Garmraid side.
We close off as Ryouma gets him to calm down and apologize for his outburst.

And that’s the end of the Cerberus exclusive missions. From here on out, things will be proceeding pretty much unchanged regardless of the chosen protagonist mech.
Next time we’ll wrap up things on the Garmraid side and keep going with that path.

See you all then!

Eva's are always pretty broken. Grunts basically can not harm them and for bosses you have spirit commands.

They have to be, since all the Eva attacks look so very dull in comparison to everything else, save perhaps Godmars. Anyway, Asuka is just saying something along the lines of:

"LCL filling in. Starting movement. Starting the NERV terminal. Linking the plug suit. Kicking off the left-clothing (Yeah, I have no loving idea; taking off her clothing?). Syncro-start."

It makes Engrish look like Shakespeare; I wonder if the Germans would find this charming, or strangle the person responsible.

Whoops, that was a typo on the penultimate german bit. I meant to write: Ausloses von Links-Kleidung.

Does it make more sense now?

Probably meant to be Auslöse then, so: "LCL filling in. Starting movement. Starting the NERV terminal. Linking the plug suit. Releasing from the left clothes." Needless to say, still makes no drat sense. That's because the full thing is supposed to be:

"LCL Einlass. Anfang der Bewegung, bestätigt. Anfang des Nervenanschlusses, bestätigt. Anfang nächster die Herzmonitor, bestätigt. Synchro-start, nun!"

("Input LCL. Start sequence: nerve connection, confirmed; heart monitor, confirmed. Start synchronisation!")

Nerven threw me off since its also the name of the organization, spaced at just the perfectly wrong spot.

Yeah, was kinda off (and the German and English are probably off as well, honestly) but...almost close enough, I guess?

So you say, but Tap (and Kaine to a lesser extent) practically dead-lifted and carried my entire team through my one playthrough of Advance. He's definitely worth his weight.

All aside, yes the D-Team are probably one of the most reliable units you get in the game. While the D-3 will trail off compared to the other two, they are extremely versatile and are usually my go-to Reals for just about anything. Admittedly, that's because some of the other reals in this game are lackluster (as seen with the ZZ members not named Judau or Puru/Puru Two) or have limited usefulness. In short, to anyone reading this thread and considering playing the game, stick with the Dragonar Team. They will not let you down. Outside of the RNG deciding to spite you, that is. Plus, Dream Color Chaser is an amazing theme song.

It's Banpresto and anime in general so I suppose we should be grateful it's not complete gibberish.

Alright, I did a bit of looking into it and what Asuka says IS something she says at some point in the series and it is, apparently, correct german (minus the umlauts).

Someone translated it as: LCL loading(/filling). Begin activation. Begin neural connection. Open input-output links. Synchro(nization) start.

MX quirky mechanic time!

Shield Defense and Counter (and I think Deflect as well, but I might be wrong, it's been many years) work just like Support Attack/Defense do. As in, they ignore the Skill stat. The first time you are attacked in a turn, Counter/Shield Defense is guaranteed to go off, then its level is reduced by 1. If you have more Counter/Shield levels, it'll keep going off the more times you are attacked. Just like Support skills, Counter/Shield uses replenish at the beginning of the Player Phase. They max out at 4, just like Support skills.

Shields also cannot function if you run out of Shield uses on the robot itself, as Brunom already covered.

There are absurd things you can do with these mechanics, which we will see in due time.

During the fights against Maillot, you put Puru 1's portrait where I believe it should be Puru 2, Brunom.

Also the D-3 sounds like an actually good support unit, those are always worth taking. The three remind me of the SRX Team, although more their units than the characters. Probably because both have some pretty obvious Gundam influences.

The R-3 only wishes that it was as good as the D-3.

The D-1 and D-3 are so good that you're nerfing yourself by not taking them all the way to the endgame. The D-2 is the "worst" of them only because it is not overpowered.

Dragonars and Evangelions... one group are the bane of all grunt units and the other is the designated best Real mech trio in the game.

The Combo attacks are good especially for all three D ships...usually its why I put the three together.

D2 is good because it take down threats from distance away before it can be cleaned up by the others.

Never underestimate villain overconfidence. Giganos probably thinks they can clean sweep the Earth forces, then pivot around and take out the Angels as a follow-up operation.

I'm pretty sure they think NERV = just another Federation branch with unique robots. Knowing that they're there doesn't mean they know what it's for.

As for the Angels, well, we've had Earth under siege by dinosaurs, devils, underground Mycenaeans and now have UFOs. I reckon they think those are just more monsters like the rest.

this game is weird, on the one hand it's like, 'yeah, all that stuff in Impact, that happened, man it's great that we're all best buds' and then on the other you have Judau who's all 'what's a getter robo' despite presumably having hung out with each other for 99 stages of fun

unless Impact is weird and no routes have Judau or the Getter Team at the same time

I didn't say this is a direct sequel - it's a spiritual one.

Many events of Impact have happened prior to this game but they were tackled by their individual groups. That is, the Argama folks dealt solely with Zeon stuff, the Nadesico handled the Jovians, the Japanese bots dealt with their underground enemies and so on.

They knew about each others' work but weren't one united team.

As for Judau, this is only a few months after the ZZ story played out so he likely never paid attention to stuff happening in Japan.
