I just heard Willem Dafoe and Brian Cranston as potential Geralds and as much as I would like it to just be Jim Carrey in old guy make-up, either of those would be incredible.

Nice, do we have any idea what time the new update is dropping? I still feel like that with a couple gameplay tweaks/additions and maybe some extra content Dream Team would have made a perfectly serviceable console title honestly

The tutorial is longer than it should be but unlocking online took me about 30 minutes, and they have passwords to skip the tutorial and online unlock. I think they realize that this is clumsy for getting people to pick up and play so they'll likely change it. I wouldn't call it overly gimmicky, there are just three new big mechanics for people to build maps around. A boost system with rings (they don't work like Mario Kart coins), a spin dash for rough terrain, slopes, and the start of each race, and a trick system. My only real complaint so far is that the item button has like 3 actions tied to it.

The tutorial isn't the worst thing in the world but suffers from being a bit overbearing and wordy, spending too long on certain explanations like springs while not even going over some basic mechanics like parrying projectiles. It doesn't help that it's mandatory without using a code, which leaves a poor first impression for someone who just wants to go in and play the game especially if you're coming from SRB2K which you can just launch and go from the start.

What I've heard from the people who played Kart 1.0 is that this has some problems. I haven't tried it so I don't know how much of this stuff has made it into the final release, but controversial additions included a system where you jostle for position at the start of the race instead of being lined up on a fixed grid, some really long hitstop every time your kart gets hit, and a new type of ultra punishing damage called 'tumble' that makes your kart bounce around through the air uncontrollably.

I will say that once you get past the annoyances, it is actually a very fun game. It's more complicated than SRB2K and while the game throws a lot of new mechanics at you it flows pretty well once you've digested it all. The biggest change between the two games is that you can now pick up rings during a match, which you can burn to give yourself some extra speed to overtake other racers and drive up super steep hills. The race startup sequence is actually pretty close to Sonic Riders, where you have free control of your character during the countdown and want to try to cross the starting line at 0, with a pretty massive time penalty if you cross too early. The courses are pretty neat, with an aesthetic inspired by the Adventure games. I actually do recommend playing it if you can get past some early game problems
