It's Sonic's 25th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than to wait until his 26th anniversary for two new games?

Sonic Mania is a 2D retro platformer built off of the engine that brought you the Sonic 1, 2 and CD iOS/Android ports. Coming to next gen consoles and PC early next year, it boasts Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles running through remixed classic zones (Green Hill) and new ones (Studiopolis). It looks like the closest thing to a "real" Sonic 4 we've ever gotten, with graphics straight out of a 32X or Saturn game. It's looking to be half canonized fangame, half Sonic's version of "Mega Man 9". Oh yeah, and the music we've heard is great.

Trailer

Officially known as "Project 2017", but often referred to as "Sonic Generations 2", this was revealed at the very end of the 25th anniversary event. It looks like it has a more serious tone than recent Sonic games. The trailer opens with a grimacing Sonic in a burning city, and ends with the line "Join the Resistance". We have absolutely no clue what this game entails other than that it features the return of classic and modern Sonics, and likely has new levels instead of remixed classic stages. This game could be an absolute trainwreck or amazing, there's no way to know right now; however, Sonic Team being given time to work on the project instead of being forced to keep to an arbitrary "25th anniversary or bust" timetable is promising. Scheduled for holiday next year.

Trailer

In addition, the Sonic Boom TV series officially has a Season 2 confirmed, and if you like Sonic taking itself not-at-all seriously, give the show a go! Do not give the Sonic Boom games the same dignity.

On that note:

It's a direct copy of the gameplay from the first one except with a gimmick where you switch between fire and ice elements. Also Amy is playable this time or something. It's coming out September, 2016. Really, who gives a poo poo though? Scroll back up and go back to admiring the sleek sexiness that is Sonic Mania.

There was a splash screen immediately after the trailer ended in the 25th anniversary stream that showed Modern, Classic, and Boom Sonic standing next to each other and a 25th anniversary logo. It appears to have been excised from the standalone trailer. I assumed it was part of it.

No, there are two ball modes, it's weird. There's one that looks like is what happens when you spin by pressing down while moving, which doesn't have any frames of animation, just a white reflection dot in the upper right, but when Sonic jumps or spin dashes he looks like he's curled up and rolling.

E: Obviously, Sonic 2017 is going to bring in the rich lore of the Ken Penders era of Freedom Fighters.

Also it's weird to see critics who are bad at Sonic talking poo poo about speed and trying to
Play up that it's REALLY precise platforming with bursts of speed. Mother fucker, if you are playing Sonic RIGHT then you're going fast WHILE doing precise platforming. I realize that's hard at first, but 2D Sonic is from an era where there were just less games and replay ability was more
Important, especially when save states were a new fancy feature. Sonic has more in common in ways with Dark Souls and the reliance on trial and error and memorization to become a blue idiot wind deity than with Mario.

1. That's not usually meant as a criticism (of the old games, when used as a criticism it's usually more of like Adventure).
2. The argument is actually that Sonic uses speed as a reward, which is still true. If you know when to jump and spin dash the game rewards you with sections where you can go extremely quickly, and even if you don't know where, the game will often reward you after difficult sections with some loops and straightaways (at least until you mess up a little later), Chemical Plant is a good example of this, you can pretty much always hit that section where you outrun the screen scroll. Green Hill in Generations is actually a pretty good example of the former, you can trash that level with only a handful of extremely, extremely precise button presses and you go extremely quickly as if the level were a straightaway.

The contrast is more to say that older Sonic games had two modes, one where you're doing well and moving quickly (95% of the time), and one where you ended up on a lower path and have to do precision platforming. This is supposed to contrast with the later games where you're mostly either moving quickly, dead, or occasionally in some forced slow section you can't easily bypass. The thing that's usually pointed out is that Sonic and Mario kind of switched level designs in 2D and 3D, Sonic had very few death pits, but you were "punished" by being put on a lower path with more forced platforming and waiting, while Mario was largely straight levels with obstacles and death pits. 3D Sonics are largely straightaways with obstacles and death pits, while 3D Marios are more exploratory and it's easier to hamper yourself than it is to die (until 3D Land/World at least which took a more 2D Mario philosophy).

Daytime Unleashed can be fun, Rooftop Run has a lot of fun sections. It hadn't quite nailed the formula yet, but it was pretty enjoyable to play through once or twice. Sonic '06 could've been the promising one had they been given more time to fix the engine and do a few more level design passes, but alas. (Still wouldn't have salvaged the story)

Some of those optional missions were garbage though, it took me numerous tries to do that one where you have to play some kind of weird pong with Vector's music notes. The main levels themselves were great though and I'm completely baffled Sega didn't release more levels as DLC as it would have been the perfect setup for it, I wanted to see reimagined versions of other Sonic levels.

I loved every level except Planet Wisp. The only part I like about Planet Wisp is Act 2 before the sidescrolling section. Both acts are just too big, and I really don't like the Spike powerup because it makes the stage feel even bigger and more aimless since now every wall is also a path. I'm sure it's better once you start memorizing the fast paths, but it was the only level where I didn't even want to try to go back and find the quickest path.

It's worth noting that if you get all the time stones in the special stages, you'll automatically get a Good Future in all zones and acts and thus the Good Ending. So don't stress yourself out trying to find the machines in the past, it's just an alternative to getting the good ending compared to the special stages.

Don't the time stones only affect levels after you get all of them? I thought you still had to get the machines in the first 7 non-boss acts (assuming you do all the special stages on your first try and get one after every level).

Just watched this Polygon demo of Sonic Mania and it looks like Sonic 3's giant rings are back. Or something. The person playing dicked around and looked for secrets, when they pushed a rock in Green Hill they fell into a chamber with a giant wireframe ring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEfKC4sxTG8

It's not clear whether it's like that because it's deactivated for the demo build or because they didn't have 50 rings or something. I hope this is the emerald method, I prefer it to the "have 50 rings and hit checkpoint/finish stage" one.

E: They found one in Studiopolis too with over 50 rings and it was still wireframe so it was probably deactivated for the demo build, or there's some other esoteric criterion.

I still have the statue and ring sitting next to me, though Classic Sonic's nose has broken off and I haven't gotten around to fixing him. I also love the PS3 theme.

It's not really a savvy use of your gaming money in NA unless you're rolling in it or can get the game as a gift, but it's a nice bit of memorabilia.

My list for top zones I'd like to see remixed. They're not necessarily my favorite for each game, but I think they have good remix potential:

Sonic 1 - The biggest problem off the bat with Sonic 1 is that most of the zones have been done better in later games (at least in terms of aesthetics). Like, I wouldn't choose Scrap Brain Zone over, say, Metropolis Zone. Other than the music, why do Star Light instead of Stardust Speedway? Collision Chaos (esp its past version) is better than Spring Yard, albeit I'd consider Casino/Carnival in the same category of "bouncy zones" and pick one of those instead. To be honest, after looking through the list of zones, the best is honestly probably Green Hill, as much as I hate to admit it. Marble Zone would be my next choice, even if it's surpassed by Hill Top for a similar aesthetic.

Sonic 2 - I'd be happy with any of Mystic Cave, Metropolis, or Wing Fortress (which I've always preferred to Flying Battery). Oil Ocean could be cool, but I think a better execution of Metropolis than what we got would be really nice. It's probably my favorite factory zone aesthetically.

Sonic CD - Quartz Quadrant or Stardust Speedway. Never Wacky Workbench, the gimmick is unsalvageable.

Sonic 3 - Hoooo boy. To be honest, Angel Island zone is really cool, but given that we're always getting Green Hill I never see it happening. I'd say IceCap, but I think the only reason I even like that zone is the snowboarding at the beginning. Overall, the one my heart is telling me to pick is Launch Base, which is sort of a "factory zone" like Metropolis, I guess, but I really like how dynamic the level is with the collapsing buildings and switches you have to break. It has a little bit of a water level, a little bit of a factory level, and a smattering of other concepts.

S&K - Honestly, I'd pick every zone other than Flying Battery or Sandopolis if given the chance. I really like S&K's Death Egg with the gravity nonsense, and am tempted to pick that. I'm also tempted to say "make a full level out of Hidden Palace zone", but I think overall I'd pick Lava Reef which is probably my favorite classic Sonic level in both gameplay and aesthetics.
