When I tried to off myself by taking a handful of sedatives, I soon got very sleepy and went to bed. I thought I would die in my sleep, and my anguish would end.

But I hadn't taken nearly enough, because I woke up at the usual time the next morning. I wasn't even late for work.

Nearly forty years later, the only love I get comes from my cat.
