It got really sad as it went on, as it dawned on the goon and the thread that her brother was into inflation fetish stuff, not sounding, and that's an unrealistic cartoon thing with no safe way to do it. At the end, they caught him yet again doing it, just hours after the second time he'd been released from the er because of complications from it. Also, there were dots to connect throughout the thread that the goon even mused on that she and her brother (and I want to say her mom too) had all been abused by extended family members, and the brother's obsession might have been a reaction to. :smith:

I clicked on some links, including her twitter. That sound file really makes me feel invasive towards them and uncomfortable. But on her twitter I can confirm she's still anti-zionist, and she had a weird period last spring where she wanted to move to cambodia and get political asylum. But the big striking mark against her sanity is the chat logs she posted with Mrs. Lowtax from around that time where somehow sees the turn of conversation as if SHE is the victimized one, not Ladytax, when all the Missus says is not to accuse them of child abuse again or she'll regret it, and the rest of the conversation is her basically being "what are you even talking about? You need to get help badly" and then crazy lady going on about how she's the victim and she called the feds on them for these conversations--that she started.

One that was pretty small and innocuous was Al Borland was given some secret mod challenge where he had to go into 3 other subforums and bullshit on pre-assigned topics and try to make himself sound convincing. I want to say he had to talk in GWS and SAS, but the one that caught my eye was in A/T where he started a topic about owning his own laundromat. I had worked in one for 6 years pretty heavily, so it caught my eye and I started asking him questions and stuff, and he took it like a champ, bullshitting about front-loaders and perc and stuff for almost a week before he was allowed to confess in GBS. That was fun.

There's not enough great romance sagas in the forums.

Remember that time when goons banded together to try to make the gooniest loser OKC profile in the world, and after it started getting a handful of real conversations, one guy volunteered to steer the vehicle right off the bridge and pose as the profile in the hopes of getting lucky after a woman agreed to meet for like, mcdonald's-a process that required a three hour train ride-and he was completely stood up?

The porn threads pretty much stopped right before I finally caved and registered, but I kinda miss the crazy way they would go, where someone would request things with very vague descriptions like "I'm looking for some scene with a girl in a blue top with black hair taking it from behind" or something, and there would be people immediately jumping in with ideas, and like, 85% of the time they'd be DEAD RIGHT. The way I understand it, it was a combination of factors that led to the pokeban in LP. Like yes, there was the weird and bad self insert fanfiction narratives (and writing Narrative Fiction for your LP can be fine. Look at the work of Chokes Mcgee in the archive for instance) but also because it became a de riguer :effort: thing where you'd have people registering and then plopping down their gen 1 lp treating it like nobody had ever seen the game before, and it was starting to flood things.

It's gotten a lot more relaxed again in the last few years, but for a while the contrast between SA quality and youtube dumps like PDP or whomever kinda went to our heads, and there was a lot of strict attitudes about how to do things and back seat modding and elitism going on.

There was a time when GBS posters would start small, non-serious threads in LP about weird games, and Voidburger really lost her poo poo about it because those posters ruined the sanctity of LPs by not taking them seriously enough and encouraging "low effort posting" in their own threads. That was pretty fun.

Sometime around I wanna say '14? Maybe as late as early into the next year, this set of attitudes came to a head where there was a serious hundreds of pages long sticky thread debating the state of the sub-forum, and how to deflate the problems. The fact that lp started on sa, and was now something with tens of thousands of offensively bad examples of elsewhere like youtube, led to a slow creep of higher standards, and more importantly elitism. When people would join and start with some rule breaking/low effort lp, people would just tell them to go back to the sandbox thread without any other comment, to the point where new posters started assuming it was a thread for posting permission, not constructive criticism. I was seeing people complain that a gba screenshot only looked about on par with hardware clarity, instead of like 1080p pixel perfect scrutiny. There was a brouhaha where some lpers decided to do the first Silent Hill game blind as a diversion from their normal major project, and a forums regular known for horror games threw a huge hissy fit that they were wandering blind and making jokes instead of it being some major informative, immersive experience.

Eventually that thread did its job of being a collective "calm the gently caress down" message and things got better. For a while people were adding a "2007 Style" label when they wanted to do casual jokey (and likely drunk) lps, but that type of presenting has gotten common enough now that there's normally no need for the label. Basically if you're entertaining/interesting, you're free to do lp however you want.

--

Regarding stream culture, it's absolutely filled with weird people desperate to connect with the people on camera, to the point where throwing money at them seems like a good idea. It's the same mentality you see with camgirls' regulars, only without the sexual charades.

I watch a lot of streams because I like old games, and it's more entertaining than turning on some dumb sitcom for me. But I see a lot of streamers that start getting unhealthy with it too. Long term streamers you often see it turn into a job instead of a hobby, with all the emotional baggage the difference between the two carries. They start giving themselves rigid schedules, and you can see clearly they're playing for their audience, not because they enjoy gaming anymore. Some even get celebrity arrogance to them when it's like maaaan, you're just some dude on a couch whose good at Nintendos. I tend to be turned off by these job streamers and just stick with the folks who are there to have fun and socialize.

Yeah, that's one of the few hard and fast things that will still get you chased out of the subforums because there's no point to it other than being an egotistical idiot. The other big thing is "youtube dumps" ie "hey, this thread is to tell you to go to youtube and look at all my videos I've already made! Don't forget to like, share and subscribe!!"

There was one mildly entertaining saga related to those rules a while back. This one dude started an account and then seemed to break every rule of the subforum, posting dumb screamy unfunny videos of himself with a facecam in the corner showing off his douchey face and attitude, and people kept making fun of him for it, and he kept trying with different games, like three times, when finally one of the Mods laid down a challenge for him to make an informative LP of chess, with consequences being a ban or immunity depending. He went silent. Everyone thought he'd been chased off with his tail between his legs, as is often the case with wannabe youtube superstars like that that come in. Then, in the very last hour of the deadline, suddenly he uploads a half hour long video of himself playing a computer chess game, and it's actually informative and well-played. And then he tossed off into the nether.

I have a degree in film. I can pontificate out my rear end all artsy fartsy about film. I also realize that C/D is a shouting chamber and rarely have threads I want to read in it. However, because I'm not a layman on the subject, I can say with certainty that SMG is not a trollish contrarian fool at all, but rather he's the absolute worst kind of film student--one who also is a philosophy student and crosses the two wires to be as absolutely ridiculous and myopic as possible. His lens of choice is the ideas of Zizek, as is obvious, and if you don't see things through that lens, well then you're obviously wrong. That sounds like a troll move, but actually you don't have to work very hard delving into film theory to find other people with their heads at similar distances up their own asses. I have a book on my shelf right now that makes an awful long effort to claim, with authority, that every single horror movie ever made is either about castration anxiety or penis envy. Obviously the author is a classical Freud follower, but he's just as long winded and sure of himself as SMG, and just as bonkers most of the time.
