No, the soundtrack specifically is amazing whether you're a horror fan or not. The style of the monsters is generally awesome too.

But man, if you haven't played through Silent Hill 2 you're missing out on one of the greatest video game stories ever.

I can watch Silent Hill be played. I just get too stressed out playing it myself. I made it as far as seeing Pyramid Head standing in the hallway behind bars and that was enough.

Ha, this is how I was with Dead Space.

I think I played it about 10 mins at a time, for weeks and weeks.

Such a good game, and the atmosphere was just amazing. I felt the whole time like this is what an Alien/Aliens game should be.

I'm the same way with Silent Hill. Well, horror games in general, but especially Silent Hill. I can watch LPs (or watch a friend play) and listen to the creepy-rear end soundtracks in the middle of the night, but as soon as I pick up the controller myself I get really stressed and have to take a break after 30 minutes.

Play during the daytime or play when you have friends over and trade off the controller when you get stressed. That's how I beat Silent Hill 2. (If you're a real baby, combine daytime and friends)

I have literally never found a videogame scary. I could never get into Silent Hill or Fatal Frame because once you get past the "horror" elements the actual gameplay is real lovely. I'm a big fan of horror films and I'd argue that Silent Hill is basically horror for nerds who don't like horror in the same way Fincher's Zodiac was a serial killer/crime movie for people who don't like serial killers or crime movies. I guess this is a big gaming sin or whatever but I also never thought any of the Silent Hill designs were very good or interesting. The nurses I guess are pretty solid but cliche but I still think Pyramid Head is silly looking, and I'm the kind of person who really liked Pumpkinhead. The music is real nice tho, doesn't really match the games at all, making it sort of like the video game equivalent of the Hellsing OST.

Well, the rule of thumb for anyone praising a video game story is to understand that it should be read as "pretty good, for a video game". Also 90% of the time when someone praises a video game's story, they actually mean its concept. That seconds rule is true for any nerdy media, BTW.

I'd keep an eye out for Power Shovel controllers, too. Really any weird specialty controller is a fun thing to go for. Wonderswan stuff is an obvious suggestion

My rule for that kind of shopping would be find something weird that you don't know what it is and it catches your eye. Of course, that's a good way to get a pile of "What the hell is this?" games (which reminds me, I really should talk about that Super Famicom Business Adventure game sometime)...

Silent Hill in general is not a game that is well known for its actual gameplay - it's more of a clumsy interactive movie. The Room is a great game concept and has a genuinely spooky atmosphere. The main reason it's given poo poo is because of the second half being an escort mission back through the levels you already did. There are cool aspects of that, you meet someone on each run through the first time that is murdered and the second time you encounter their ghosts, which are all unique and generally a pain in the rear end.

I think it's actually a very good game, it just suffers from being not as good as 1-3 story wise.

A few really early Shadowgate-style haunted house VN's on PC scared me when I was a wee lad playing at night (I think it helped that the only sound was the whirring of the fans inside my 386), since then the one that stands out to me is Resident Evil VII on PSVR.

The scariest game ever is Uninvited on the NES. At the very least I remember being more creeped out by that than any other game I've ever played. I think it's a combination of the fact that your character is unarmed and helpless, and there's so little going on graphically that your brain provides its own scary details.

Wait wait wait. You had the choice between a Castlevania soundtrack and the Silent Hill soundtrack, and you willingly chose Silent Hill? I mean, if the option was both, sure, I could see it, but one or the other and your pick was Silent Hill.

I mean, this is the thread for bad purchasing decisions, but that one takes the cake. :v:

Castlevania 1 on vinyl is the straight music. 2 and 3 have both NES and Famicom versions but idk there's something less special about 8-bit music on vinyl while Silent Hill benefits from the tiny imperfections of analog format.

I can't take horror games/movies seriously and they're only "scary" when WARGLEBARGLE they getcha with the jump scare. Ya drat pussy! What a baby. If you get a rise out of being startled, that's great, but it's thoroughly unpleasant for me and not scary as in disturbing or weird. It's why I won't play RE7 and why I quit Outlast. You don't get points for startling people. That's not a talent.
