🚣RowboatMan: ❄️Freezing time🕰️ is an old P.I. 🥧trick...

So, I have this odd fascination with golf video games, mainly on PC. When I was growing up, my cousin and uncle were huge into golf, with my cousin actually getting a scholarship to study and play down in Georgia.

Anyway, whenever I'd visit, most of the games they'd have on their blazingly fast 486 were golf games. I always loved the slight graphical advancements from one game to the next, especially the pro shop. I think what really drove home my love of golf games, aside from playing against my cousin all the time, was that I could rarely get theirs to run on my then-386, though not for lack of trying. I just wanted pretty graphics, because at the time, they just looked so real.

So, I think I'm going to start on a quest to gradually collect and play (and maybe rate) practically every single golf game that came out for PC between, say 1987-1996. Maybe not the hard copies, as I have a son and responsibilities, so I can't just be spending money on stuff like this, but who knows.

Any recommendations on good titles from this era? I remember one silly game, I think it was in CGA, and there were dinosaurs on the course. I haven't bothered to look it up yet, but I'm sure it's not hard to find. If it's outside my date range, I'll change the range to include it because it was drat fun :colbert:

Links was the big golf franchise at the time with several versions coming out for PC's in that period. Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman had their own franchises as well at the time. SimGolf has a lot of fans for the course designer, but I think the golfing itself was lackluster. I've got a copy of British Open Championship Golf that I've owned forever and never played; the reason it's worth mentioning is that it's by Looking Glass, the people who made System Shock and Thief.

This is great info, thanks so much! I remember the Links franchise, as well as the Nicklaus line, though not so much the Greg Norman ones. I'll definitely see what I can do about checking them out.

Also, I'm surprised by the Looking Glass connection there, wow.

Looking Glass was an essentially an outgrowth of MIT and the developers were focused on designing interesting simulations. That's why System Shock is so complicated, Thief has the incredibly detailed sound propagation model, and Flight Unlimited used a unique for the time fluid dynamic flight model. My guess is they were looking for something else they could model with the Flight Unlimited engine and struck on golf.

Another 'shock' connection, but a weird one; looking up "golf", brings up, among the results, "Bioshock 2". Most likely due to the Andrew Ryan throwback with the achievement. I thought it was funny.

The best 2D golf game is Neo Turf Masters, by a wide margin. There are plenty of others to try, but this one is the easiest to play and the most stylish. Made by Nazca, same ex-Irem dudes who went on to do Metal Slug in '96.

Ok, I really can't wait to try this one out, wow.

Forgive me if this has been brought up before, I was following the thread a few months ago, but unbookmarked it until now.

I can get (community-developed-and-maintained) achievements with my retro games now?

http://retroachievements.org/

It's far from perfect, but wow, neat! I'm not any sort of achievement hunter, but at the same time, after playing most of these games to death at this point, it's nice to have extra, trackable objectives added to them.

I'm on there as robotcousin if anyone else wants to add me. :shobon:

Yeah I posted about this too maybe a year or so ago? It's a really cool concept, but most of the achievs aren't very inspired. Lots of "Clear stage <x>", but few off-the-beaten-path or score/challenge-type ones. But it's all user-generated so it depends on whoever is making them. And you have to download separate emulators for each system, they should consider moving to a multi-core environment like Mednafen or BizHawk, but that's probably a lot of work. Also no arcade games. :(

Use Retroarch, it fully supports this site/system now.

Speaking of, Retroarch looks a HELL of a lot better than I remember it, but I haven't used it in about a year or so. It's all nice and Playstation-esque.

Okay, I'll give it a whirl... how do I do this? None of the RA emulators appear in the in-system download menu so I assume I'll have to manually add them somehow?

No, you don't need those emulators, you literally just need Retroarch and the corresponding games. The dude making Retroarch added support for the achievement tracking himself. Get whatever core is required for the system (like Nestopia for NES, for example... or one of the others that are available), sign in to your Retroachievements account through the emulator (and enable hardcore mode :getin:), and you should be good to go. Find a super easy achievement on the site, and test it out. That should be all you need to do.

The emulators listed on the retroachievements.org site are the ones to use if you wanted to make your own achievements to submit.

Okay, thanks. I see an option for "Retro Achievements" in the config menu, I guess I just have to turn that on. I don't see where to sign into RA. Do I have to load a game first? Apparently you can't just navigate to the directory and type in a title like in Windows file dialog. I have full No-Intro sets so this is kind of a pain.

You have to sign in under the 'user' section. Took me a little while to find it, and ideally, there'd be a quick link to that section when you get to the retro achievements part, but no there isn't. There won't be any sort of confirmation that you've put in your credentials properly, but when you load up a game (RetroArch can either load a file, or you can scan folders for stuff, and I believe you can set up playlists later on, once your games are located by the emulator), the website will immediately show on your profile feed on the site that you've done so, so don't be putting on Barbie's Mall Nightmare.

Or definitely do that. :getin:

Is Vegas Dream lesser-known? I have no idea, but I don't really see many people talking about it, and it's really kind of fun. Sure, it's a casino game, but then you have people come up to you and interact with you. You can get married or robbed!

It didn't work for me. I have my credentials in the frontend, and started up a game I have achievements in, but checking the website it still says I haven't played it since last year. Also, if I F1 during play and go to Achievements List in the Quick Menu it is blank. Like I said before, I'm using No-Intro, do I need the GoodRoms version? Used the NEStopia core like you recommended.

Maybe it's a thing with the no intro, not sure, I'm not familiar with that. I was just using nestopia as an example, any core should work.

The Goodtools work by checking MD5 or SHA-1 checksums and renaming files accordingly by comparing to a database of known ROM's. After that it pops them into specific folders based on a list of "put into this folder" naming conventions. It's definitely not perfect, like the "Translations" folders should ideally further break down by language, and while some games have game-specific hack folders if the game in question has 8 million hacks there are definitely some where this would be sensible, but it's a good first pass especially if you're looking for "complete" sets.

I definitely have to check this out, thanks!

I've never really paid that much attention to the pal vs ntsc / 50 vs 60 Hz thing, aside from knowing about what territories have what, and how they're incompatible.

So, do PAL/50Hz games just run annoyingly slower than NTSC/60Hz?

You may like Watch Out for Fireballs. They take a game and talk through playing the game. It's not exactly my cup of tea.

Appreciated, thanks! Yeah, I listened to a fair amount of WOFF before realizing that I can't stand their 'jokes', voices, or just how many times they go "Sooooo, yeah....".I try not to be picky, but it just got to be too much.

Seriously, it gets cheesy at points (many points, actually :negative:) but overall, I absolutely love The Video Game Years and strongly recommend it to anyone and everyone in this thread.
