System Metternich posted:

Almost, it's “Hail, Fortune! The die rollers salute/greet you“ which suspiciously sounds like a P&P thing :v:

Apparently gladiators in ancient Rome used to greet the Emperor with “Ave Caesar! Morituri te salutant“ (Hail, Emperor! Those destined to death greet you) before murdering each other, but I don't know if this is anything more than a legend

Legend or not, I based my looted latin on that.
A kind goon on the classical forum gave me
Ave, Fortuna! Aleatores te salutant!

as a great option for what I wanted.
I may or may not 3D model a dice tower and I wanted something latin to go on it.

Happy to have made it to the end of the thread, even with the carrier posting.
Then again, there was some excellent interwar tank posting, which is always hilarious.

By the way, there's one thing that's bugging me: Ronson Shermans. Like you people said, they installed wet racks to stop cooking Tommies, but how long did that take? What's the time gap between Shermans starting to roll around like angry houses and the time they get/are refitted with wet racks? I mean, it wasn't like they discovered the issue on day two and fixed it with an overnight patch, so there should have been a period of flammable tanks, no? What about the Soviet Shermans?

Still on Shermans: how fast was the switch over to 76 mm gun? Where there Sherman tankers rolling around in 75s in 1945?

If anyone is shy about efortposting on Shermans post war as well various ways they got modernised, I would like it if you posted away. Going by Fate of a Nation, the Israelis were sticking any gun they could on Shermans.

Were there ever similar attempts to upgun T-34/85s to a hilarious extent?

My only regret is that I never had the time/discipline of mind to read them. Thank you, Tin! You were one of the biggest factors into my newfound appreciation of WWI.

By the way, Cyrano mentioned French Napoleonic sappeurs as a particularly badass/bloodthirsty bunch. Anybody wants to post about their exploits and how they assaulted fortifications with axes and stuff?

On a less harrowing note, Israel DLC for Wargame dropped yesterday. I can't decide what's funnier: various experiments with Shermans or the traditional video game inability to cope with mechanized infantry that leads to 15 guys sharing one humwee or 10-man squads cramming themselves into Merkavas.

Slightly back on topic: what would have happened to the French if the Russians captured? What was the usual fate of PoWs in Napoleonic wars

Considering tanks don't generally fight infantry close in any more if they can avoid it because everyone and their dog can have an anti tank launcher, the need for personal defence weapons mounted on the tank is rather slim, and nobody wants to spend space and weight on housing gunners when you could put more ammunition, armour, or a kettle in there instead.

Yeah, I learned it the hard way that historical video games are not.

Except for maybe grognardy strategy games made by obscure studios and sold for $waytoomany.

Getting interested in history through video games is embarking on a path of constant disappointment in games.

Also, I had fun with Red Orchestra and Day of Infamy. Maybe not that much fun with bolt action rifles (I fire, I miss because I'm an idiot, I don't get to fire twice), but I had fun. Especially when you get to be playing battlefield buddies with the officer and RTO in Infamy.

So, this was posted on livejournal, in regards to this gunwagon:

my friend translated this for me posted:

[here] we can see the most interesting instances - Air Defence Missile System"Kvadrat" mounted on the chassis (export model of ADMS "Kub"), 85-mm Zenith cannon KS-1 and a 100-mm KS-19. Looks pretty apocalyptic, just like from "Red Alert". In the background, if my eyes are not deceiving me, there are two more KS-19s, but on truck chassis, ZSU-57-2, wheelbarrows with different weaponry, and I think, couple of "Gvozdika". In the next picture, 85-mm up close.

Gotta say, I love how the export version of "Kub" (cube) is called "Kvadrat" (square)

As far as my own "reasearch" had produced at that point,

in a message to Hogge Wild posted:

My friend hasn't gotten back to me yet, but it seems someone took the TEL (learned a new acronym today) from this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2K12_Kub
and put either KS-19
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_m...ey-haosef-3.jpg
or
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/85_mm...ense_gun_M1939_(52-K)
on it.

The gun shield looks very much 52-K, but - I'm gonna get technical here - the gun breech (?) in the second picture in Livejournal looks very much like KS-19, however the hybrid mount doesn't have the two torpedo-looking thingies going through the the shield. Maybe it's a part that's not too important for the operation of the gun, I dunno.

It's definitely more 40K than Red Alert 2. The Flak track is a transport and AA vehicle. Meanwhile, these guys probably ran out of missiles/lost the radar/didn't have people who knew how to operate this this, but they did have passable drivers, gun operators and enthusiastic guys with blowtorches. So sorta like 40K, where they keep forgetting how to make or operate things.

It was apparently from a Hezbollah column that also included T-54s and Kornet missiles on quadbikes.

On the other hand, armored trains are the fastest thing on the ground around WWI and they use the rail that you want to keep intact for your own movement. So they can always keep changing position, disgorgibg troops in all those important places (if they weren't important, they wouldn't have rail) where they can gently caress up your movement and supply while also supporting said troops.

I think it really shines in an RCW scenario where you have huge tracts of nothing connected only by the vital rail you can't afford to sabotage and really nothing approacing an artillery park.

And even if you had a park, good luck communicating with it in a timely manner to gently caress up a train.
