video games have become garbage over the past decade anyway because all of the mid-sized companies have either been bought out or gone bankrupt, and the rise of indie games has resulted in the planet-sized egos of the people who make them. also konami's sitting on a bunch of IPs (MGS, Castlevania, Silent Hill, Contra, Mystical Ninja, Bomberman ever since Hudson Soft died out, just to name a few) but they're not making video games out of them anymore

the first person shooter has been in a hole since call of duty and to a lesser extent halo. i dont particularly dislike call of duty it just isnt the ur-shooter. you can make a first person shooter that isn't claustrophobic and disorienting, aim down sights and sprinting are not necessary
any industry that's been consolidated to the point where a few companies control most of the output has a problem with creative stagnation, and video games since the ps3/360/wii era are no exception. that's around the time the middle got squeezed out

i'd like to think that FPS games are making a comeback since overwatch and Doom 2016 don't follow the mold of the call of duty-style shooter, but two games don't necessarily make a trend

also like Hollywood, every video game is either way too expensive to make (all the AAA fare) or made on the cheap (indie games). the middle has fallen out
