What did Infection set up?

Infection was basically every Doctor Who serial ever. Including overloaded exposition while walking down a series of corridors.

This might be a good (or terrible) time to mention that a friend and I started a B5 podcast recently. We go episode by episode but don't do recaps. Our overall thesis is "why do we live this sometimes very lovely show so much?" Only the first four are out so far - our ep on Infection will come out on Friday. Have a listen if that's your thing.

Since there are a number of goons checking out B5 for the first time or doing a rewatch this seems like an excellent time to mention my podcast, The Name of the Pod. It’s an episode by episode discussion of issues and themes, not so much a recap. We’re just starting season 3. People seem to like it, I dunno.

The one place where the Lurker’s Guide master order is I feel important is Walkabout/War Without End is s3. Walkabout aired after WWE but makes no sense that way.

Since there are a bunch of people watching for the first time I’ll take the opportunity to plug the B5 podcast I do, The Name of the Pod. We go episode by episode but focus more on the enduring legacy of the show in genre television rather than just synopses, and we try to avoid spoilers of what’s coming. We’re in the middle of s3 right now. We’re not complete garbage so maybe give an episode a listen.

I wouldn't call Strazynsci a hack or a one hit wonder - he did yeoman's work on TV scripts for decades - but I do tend to think he had one great idea, B5, which he's been recycling or attempting to recapture since.

How much of Sense8 was his conceptually vs the Wachowskis? Because I’d call that show about 80% fantastic.

I just finished the episode that was a two-part followup to Babylon Squared. I love time travel plots. I know it's kind of like stage magic, applauding someone for making a tricky called shot when really they were in total control of the outcome the whole time, but it's so satisfying to see everything wrap up and resolve from a different perspective. Even though it's the literal definition of a retcon.

It wasn’t 100% in JMS’s control though because he lost Michael O’Hare between Babylon Squared and WWE. I have to imagine that required some effort to bend the whole storyline to where Sinclair could still be The One and Sheridan/Delenn were still the main characters. I wonder what that would have looked like if O’Hare had stuck around for the whole run - would that 2 parter have been the series closer at the end of season 5?

Name of the Pod seems okay so far, but I am not an avid listener to recap podcasts to know good from bad.

I’m one of the dudes on The Name of the Pod and I’d say we’re okay to not terrible. I think we may have been a bit harsh on season 1 but lightened up as the series progressed. We don’t do recaps, mainly analyses and discussion. We’ll be starting season 5 in a few weeks - if there are any topics folks would like to hear about let me know.

The B plot of TKO, Ivanova dealing w her father’s death, is actually very solid. It’s the catastrophic mismatch with the terrible, terrible A plot that is baffling. That’s a sin the show commits waaaay too often.

Peter Capaldi or Wentworth Miller.

We also did a “miscast” recasting, going for comically bad choices. There we picked John Colicos or Danny DeVito.

I could've said the same for Jurasik, though, both before and after B5.

Miller was Leonard Snart/Captain Cold on The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, end he just chews on the scenery like he’s famished.

I think season 1 of Sense8 is phenomenal, and you can definitely tell some of the speeches are pure weapons grade JMS.

Season 2 leans a bit too much into the metaplot especially as they try to wrap everything up in the finale when they learned they were canceled.
