Hello I am watching this for the first time and I'm up to episode 2. Can I read the episode guide listings on http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries/us/eplist.html

While I finish episodes or will I end up spoiling stuff for myself?

Episode names are generally not spoilers at all, although sometimes there might be a key word that indicates an episode might be kind of action-y or whatever.

The rest of the Lurker's guide is spoilery as gently caress

Kosh doing that greeting is one of those things that, on re-watch, is like "OH poo poo THAT IS SUPER OBVIOUS"

For a first-time viewer, it's like "oh look some alien language babble."

Then later you start hearing the Minbari use the same phrase. And you learn that Valen is an important Minbari religious figure. And you learn that the Minbari are the closest (but still really distant) to the Vorlons, so it's not THAT weird that a Vorlon used a Minbari phrase.

It's not until the business with Minbari souls in human bodies AND the stuff with B4 doing time travel that you really have all the pieces to make it all out.

It's a well-done reveal because all the pieces were there, but they didn't slap you in the face.

He's just a big horndog. Doesn't he hide his bionic eye to spy on Sheriden and Delenn at some point?

Someone needs to write a story about the poor sod who gets called in to work on G'Kar's laptop and stumbles on the ambassador's browser history.

I think B5 does an excellent job of showing how fascism can take over despite being over-the-top and drat near cartoonishly evil. One only has to look at the rise of fascist conservatism in the west to see it in the real world. Far too many people are our Zachs: just going along with it because everyone else seems to be. Once they're in, it's hard to get out, largely because getting out means one has to face that one did (or, at the very least, enabled) bad things. And worse, one has to admit that one was dumb enough to fall for the cartoonish evil in the first place.

There's a truly excellent quote by Sagan that goes:

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken.

Also:

SlothfulCobra posted:

B5's impression of fascism seems a little ridiculous and cartoonish, a lot because of JMS's weird style that doesn't quite line up with how people talk, but with current perspective after the last few years and also a bunch of experts popping out to explore comparisons between the present and various nazi and fascist movements, it turns out that fascism is actually really stupid and cheesy. A lot of people like depicting it as smoother, or subtle, or conniving, but people motivated by mass hate aren't clever or calm. It feels worse and it seems stupid to be taken advantage of something so stupid, but that's what it is.

I was gonna quote another post and agree with both, but it was also yours. Turns out we have very similar thought processes about fascism.

Honestly, I'd rather they have an all-new cast than try to re-tell the same story with the half of the existing cast that's still alive (while filling in the other half with newbies).

That's a respectable and defensible position for sure. I think most people exist on that continuum somewhere, otherwise you'd never be able to judge what to give your time to. I've also found that fan criticism can be a good inoculation and help me better enjoy things like e.g. Andromeda and Stargate Universe, knowing and being prepared for their faults instead of being blindsided by them.

Yes. Any respectable Babylon 5 fan will absolutely say something like "Babylon 5 is incredible, but"

...but Season 1 is uneven
...but the first half of Season 5 is weird, mostly due to a surprise series renewal.
...but the CGI is extremely 90s
...but it's worth it just for Londo and G'kar in the elevator.

I always felt that "young" in relation to the Narns (and other species, for that matter) wasn't about (or at least JUST about) their biology, but their political relevance. The Narns only recently became independent, and not only independent, but important. Significant enough to get a seat at the Big Table! They're "young" because they're in the early steps of being a major power, acquiring territory and resources and making alliances with other important powers. The Centauri and Minbari, by contrast, are "old" because they already did those things a long time ago. It's as much about the feeling of everything being new as it is about how long ago their ancestors emerged from the primal sludge.

It's a bit of both, but it's definitely less about literal number of years and more about level of maturity as a society/species.

I think the Centauri come across as sympathetic because we're shown that the mustache-twirling villains are so rare. Everyone is horrified of Cartagia, even the other Centauri. It makes Londo--and through him, the Centauri--appear less villainous because they're so opposed to that outright, over-the-top villainy.

I absolutely love how the Minbari are outraged about the Black Star. It's entirely on-brand for space elfs.

The Minbari, especially the warrior caste, feel they are superior in every way to the other races. Culturally. Technologically. Morally. They are the peak of the younger races, and they know it.

Then some upstart space orc of a human dares to fight back, and he wins? Not just wins, but survives to tell the tale?

This wasn't some heroic sacrifice. This wasn't some kamikaze, human wave attack like we saw in In the Beginning. This was one man who killed a whole shipful of Minbari with primitive tactics and technology.

Of course they're going to hate that guy. Of course they're going to talk poo poo about his methods. The hubris of the warrior caste cannot abide such an insult! He didn't just break some taboo, he did the unthinkable and poked them right in their overinflated egos.
