It's true and I'm tired of pretending it isn't
The Knack - My Sharona (1979):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR2JtsVumFA

I always thought it was funny when I heard this play at my store. It has a great beat and is easy to dance to. On the other hand, the lyrics suggest the song is about statutory rape, at best:

quote:

...
Oh my little pretty one, pretty one
When you gonna give me some time Sharona
When you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it coming, off the line Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up
Such a dirty mind, always get it up
For the touch of the younger kind
My my my i yi wooh
My my my my Sharona...

Not quite family establishment material.

Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqUa_G1h3pw

Awesome rock tune with a cool synthy intro. Sounds like it might be about partying. Well, kind of; it's about preventing right-wing extremists from assassinating progressive political figures:

quote:

...
Lunatic fringe
In the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season
But you won't get too far
Cause you gotta blame someone
For your own confusion
We're on guard this time
(On guard this time)
Against your final solution
Oh no...

OutKast - Hey Ya!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWgvGjAhvIw&t=67s

Very catchy dance tune! Love the instrumentation on this one. Oh, and it's about divorce, at least at first....

quote:

...
One, two, three, uh!

My baby don't mess around
Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure.
Uh, but does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me
Walk out the door.
Don't try to fight the feelin'
'Cause the thought alone is killing me right now..
Uh, thank god for mom and dad
For sticking two together
'Cause we don't know how...
UH!

Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.

You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But got it just don't get it
'Til there's nothing at all
We get together
Oh, we get together
But separate's always better when there's feelings involved
If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, what makes, what makes love the exception
So why you, why you
Why you, why you, why you are we so in denial
When we know we're not happy here...
Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance...

...at which point the song shamelessly switches to a generic dance tune. Oh well!

Bawitdaba-Kid Rock:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J9ayHYClw8

One of the songs that made Kid Rock huge in his day. Awesome heavy rock tune with a great chant that repeats relentlessly. Surprisingly though, "Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy" loosely translates to "Why must we be oppressed?", a phrase universally used by native tribes during the genocides in the United States during the 1800's. This seems to suggest some sort of unity with those who oppose oppression in any form.

quote:

...
And this is for the questions that don't have an answer
The midnight glances
And the topless dancers
The can of freaks

Cars packed with speakers
The g's with the forty's
And the chicks with beepers
The northern lights

And the southern comfort
And it don't even matter if your veins are punctured
All the crackheads, the critics, the cities
And all my heroes at the methodone clinics

All you bastards at the i.r.s.
For the crooked cops and the cluttered desks
For the shots of jack and the caps of meth
Half pints of love and a fifth of stress

All the hookers that are tricking out in hollywood
And for my hoods of the world misunderstood
I said it's all good and it's all in fun
Now get in the pit and try to love someone!

Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy
Shake the boogie said up jump the boogie
Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy
Shake the boogie said up jump the boogie

Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy
Shake the boogie said up jump the boogie
Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy
Shake the boogie said up jump the boogie...

Mike And The Mechanics - Silent Running:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_zWl8xnT00

This one is less surprising if you pay even a little attention. It's about some sort of coup or revolution in which things are bound to become more dystopian. The singer is advising what seems to be his family and telling them how to prepare.

quote:

...
Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don't believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I'm with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There's a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here...

Post!
