and then the car turned in to fire

Welcome back for another round of posting in this, the thread for the world’s best league for criminals, Chinese money laundering, unrepentant fascists, meltdowns and

.

Last year Juventus won the title again in what is becoming another dynasty from the plucky lads from Torino. Two very big records were broken: Gonzalo Higuain broke Gunnar Nordhals 60+ year old record for goals scored in a season with 36, and Gigi Buffon broke Sebastiano Rossi’s 929 minutes without a goal with 974. Every team was except Juventus was poo poo. Every single team. They were all bad. Especially Napoli, who were the worst, and Milan who were worse than the worst. Here are the teams that will lose to Juve this season:

Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio
Home City Bergamo
Manager: Giampiero Gasperini
Notable players in: Alberto Paloschi (striker, Swansea)
Notable players out: Marten De Roon (midfielder, Boro), Marco Borriello (striker, Cagliari)
Trophies: Coppa Italia [1] 62/63
Last finish: 13th
Atalanta had a forgettable season last year, ending mid table without much flash or disaster. Their one club man, Gianpaolo Bellini, finally retired after playing his entire career for the club. Giampiero Gasperini has been brought in to do what he does best: exist as a manager that definitely is the manager in a club that plays football. Marten De Roon was looking pretty good last year so naturally he was sold to an English team.

Bologna Football Club 1909
Home City Bologna
Manager: Roberto Donadoni
Notable players in: Simone Verdi (striker, Carpi via Milan)
Notable players out: Emmanuele Giaccherini (midfielder, Napoli via Sunderland)
Trophies: Serie A [7] 24/25, 28/29, 35/36, 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 63/64
Coppa Italia [2] 69/70, 73/74
Last finish: 14th

Bologna stayed up largely due to a Christmastime set of matches in which they slayed all the big teams with big Giak and fatty Destro putting in some serious work. They were kind of crap after and before. Donadoni seems to be doing well enough to keep his job and to keep the team up. They’re likely to lose Amadou Diawara to a big club as toward the end of the season he was turning heads.

Cagliari Calcio
Home City Cagliari
Manager: Massimo Rastelli
Notable players in: Marco Borriello (striker, Atalanta), Mauricio Isla (midfielder, Marseilles via Juventus), Bruno Alves (defender, Fenerbahce), Simone Padoin (good luck charm, Juventus)
Notable players out: none
Trophies: /Serie A 69/70
Last finish: Serie B Champions

Cagliari are making their return to the top flight after just one year and are already looking like they are going to stay up. They’ve signed some good players and have not sacked their manager which I think is a good move. Unfortunately Massimo Cellino no longer owns the team so we wont see any of his spectacular meltdowns and letters from jail. Out of the three promoted teams I think Cagliari has the best chances of staying up and continuing to build from there.

Associazione Calcio Chievo Verona
Home City Verona
Manager: Rolando Maran
Notable players in: Stefano Sorrentino (keeper, free signing from Palermo)
Notable players out: Simone Pepe (midfielder, end contract)
Trophies: none at the top level
Last finish: 9th

The Sunderland of Serie A, the boring poo poo side that just wont go down. Last year they finished….9th? Are you loving kidding me with this poo poo? For fucks sake they’re getting better? gently caress off. Supposedly they’re trying to sign Balotelli.

Football Club Crotone
Home City Crotone
Manager: Davide Nicola
Notable players in: nobody (Mesbah definitely does not count!)
Notable players out: Anton Budimir (striker, Sampdoria)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 2nd In Serie B

Crotone will be competing in the Serie A for the first time in their history. The city is a relatively quiet town on the very southern edge of the main Italian peninsula, known mostly for it’s castle and that Pythagoras was said to have lived there at some point. Crotone’s stadium is very small and as such they will most likely be playing their home matches elsewhere. I’ve read that Pescara’s stadium is one of the candidates but that is halfway up the country and it would hardly be a home game or even close to one, really. Crotone have a big task in front of them, and have lost their manager to Genoa. Davide Nicola is probably best remembered for almost getting Bari in to the top flight again a few years ago and for relegating Livorno.

Empoli Football Club
Home City Empoli
Manager: Giovanni Martusciello
Notable players in: Alberto Gilardino (striker, Palermo)
Notable players out: Piotr Zielinski (midfielder, Napoli via Udinese), Mario Rui (defender, Roma)
Trophies: None at the top flight
Last finish: 10th

Empoli finished an admirable 10th last season, which apparently wasn’t good enough for the board since Marco Giampaolo left at the end of the season to be replaced by his assman. While losing Zielinski will probably hurt them Empoli have a talent for finding good players in their own youth ranks or wheeling and dealing some loans. They should have enough good players for sure but their unexperienced manager may stall them.

Associazione Calcio Firenze Fiorentina
Home City Firenze
Manager: Paolo Sousa
Notable players in: Crisitan Tello (midfielder, Barcelona), a guy named Diks from Vitesse lol
Notable players out: Facundo Roncaglia (defender, Celta Vigo), Kuba Blasczcykowski (midfielder, Wolfsburg via Dortmund)
Trophies: Serie A [2] 55/56, 68/69
Coppa Italia [6] 39/40, 60/61, 65/66, 74/75, 95/96, 00/01
Cup Winners Cup [1] 60/61
Last finish: 5th

Fiorentina sort of fell apart at the end of the season but managed to hold on to the 5th place spot and direct Europa League football because Milan are so insanely loving bad. The preseason has not been kind to the Viola as they have lost every single one of their friendlies and may have lost Borja Valero to injury for a while in the last one. It’s hard to tell where this team is going, they haven’t made any big signings like they usually do, though they do have managerial continuity which is more than you can say for a lot of teams. With the quality they have they should be in the Europa League spots.

Genoa Cricket and Football Club
Home City Genova
Manager: Ivan Juric
Notable players in: Miguel Veloso (midfielder, Dynamo Kiev, what lol)
Notable players out: Cristian Ansaldi (defender, Inter), Sebastian De Maio (defender, Anderlecht)
Trophies: Serie A [9] 1897/98; 1898/99; 1899/1900; 1901/02; 1902/03; 1903/04; 1914/15; 1922/34 1923/24
Coppa Italia [1] 36/37
Last finish: 11th

Genoa finished out last season on a high, winning a solid 3-0 over their derby opponents Sampdoria, but were inconsistent throughout. Manager Gasperini had a good spine of players but losing De Maio, who was pretty consistent throughout will change that as everything seemed to go through him. The biggest loss may be of Suso, who will return to Milan after his loan. Since Gasperini left for Atalanta, Ivan Juric has taken over. Juric managed Crotone to their first ever Serie A season last year, and will be hoping to do well with his other club of note Genoa. We’ll see how it goes, it’s a different game as we all know.

Football Club Internazionale Milano
Home City Milano
Manager: Frank De Boer
Notable players in: Cristian Ansaldi (defender,Genoa) Ever Banega (midfielder, Sevilla), Antonio Candreva (midfielder, Lazio)
Notable players out: Adem Ljajic (attacker, Torino), Juan Jesus (defender, Roma)
Trophies: Serie A [18] 1909/10, 19/20, 29/30, 37/38, 39/40, 52/53, 53/54, 62/63, 64/65, 65/66, 70/71, 79/80, 88/89, 05/06, 06/07, 07/08, 08/09 09/10
Coppa Italia [7] 38/39, 77/78, 81/82, 04/05, 05/06, 09/10, 10/11
European Cup/Champions League [3] 63/64, 64/65, 09/10
UEFA Cup/Europa League [3] 90/91, 93/94, 97/98
Last finish: 4th

Inter, in my opinion, were only this high in the table because the other teams below them that could’ve been there collapsed. Mancini bumbled his way in this position while complaining about Yaya Toure the whole time. The club finally had enough of him last week and canned him (he’ll say that he left of his own accord but I bet he got the sack), replacing him almost the same day with Frank De Boer. I heard he’s poo poo, so hopefully Inter collapse and gently caress off.

Juventus Football Club
Home City Torino
Manager: Massimiliano Allegri who will get found out this year I swear to god
Notable players in: Gonzalo Higuain (striker, Napoli), Miralem Pjanic (midfielder, Roma), Dani Alves (defender, Barcelona), Marko Pjaca (midfielder, Dinamo Zagreb)
Notable players out: Paul Pogba (midfielder, Manchester United), Alvaro Morata (striker, Real Madrid) Simone Padoin (midfielder, title winner, champion, Cagliari)
Trophies: Serie A [30] 1905, 25/26, 30/31, 31/32, 32/33, 33/34, 34/35, 49/50, 51/52, 57/58, 59/60, 60/61, 66/67, 71/72, 72/73, 74/75, 76/77, 77/78, 80/81, 81/82, 83/84, 85/86, 94/95, 96/97, 97/98, 01/02, 02/03, 11/12, 12/13, 13/14, 14/15, 15/16
Coppa Italia [10] 37/38, 41/42, 58/59, 64/65, 78/79, 82/83, 89/90, 94/95, 14/15, 15/16
European Cup/Champions League [2] 84/85, 95/96
Cup Winners Cup [1] 83/84
UEFA Cup/Europa League [3] 76/77, 89/90, 92/93
Last finish: 1st

Juve destroyed the league last season as they have done the past 4 seasons before that. Then this summer they bought all of their closest rivals best players so expect more of the same. Pretty unbeatable, they’ll stroll through the league and focus on the Champions League, and honestly I think they’ll do just fine without Pogba.

Societa Sportiva Lazio
Home City Roma
Manager: Simone Inzaghi
Notable players in: Ciro Immobile (striker, Torino via Sevilla)
Notable players out: Miro Klose (striker, end contract), Antonio Candreva (midfielder, Inter)
Trophies: Serie A [2] 73/74, 99/00
Coppa Italia [5] 1958, 97/98, 99/00, 03/04, 08/09, 12/13
Cup Winners Cup [1] 99/98
Last finish: 8th

Lazio’s opening day for season tickets netted a whopping 11 purchases. The players, Lotito and some of the staff personally went to their houses to thank them and gave them signed shirts and things which I thought was nice but also lmao 11 season tickets. Losing Candreva and Klose is really bad and I don’t think they have the midfielders to get the ball to Immobile (HES STANDING STILL HAHA SHOULD BE EASY HAHAHAHA). They signed some guy named Bastos who I thought was Michel Bastos but instead is an Angolan guy, if it was Michel Bastos it would’ve been better because:

Associazione Calcio Milan
Home City Milano
Manager: Vincenzo Montella
Notable players in: Gianluca Lapdula (striker, Pescara)
Notable players out: Jeremy Menez (striker, Bourdeaux)
Trophies: Serie A [18] 1901, 1906, 1907, 50/51, 54/55, 56/57, 58/59, 61/62, 67/68, 78/79, 87/88, 91/92, 92/93, 93/94, 95/96, 98/99, 03/04, 10/11
Coppa Italia [5] 66/67, 71/72, 72/73, 76/77, 02/03
European Cup/Champions Leage [7] 62/63, 68/69, 88/89, 89/90, 93/94, 02/03, 06/07
Cup Winners Cup [2] 67/68, 72/73
Last finish: 7th

Milan had a garbage rear end season in which the best thing that happened was beating two Serie B teams on the way to the Coppa Italia final which was of course lost to Juventus. That combined with making GBS threads the bed against every team they faced in the last two months of the season means that there is again no European football and no money to buy anyone with. Just last week Berlusconi officialized a sale to some Chinese people that definitely are real this time ok. Oh but the money is only coming in December so just make do until then because it’s definitely going to be there in December. The one good thing to come out of this silly season (so far) is that Bacca is probably staying, i.e. there is some money from somewhere because Milan can still pay him.

Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli
Home City Napoli
Manager: Maurizio Sarri
Notable players in: Emmanuele Giaccherini (midfielder, Bologna via Sunderland), That Polish guy from Ajax that sucks, that Polish guy from Empoli that is good
Notable players out: Gonzalo Higuain (striker, Juventus)
Trophies: Serie A [2] 86/86, 89/90
Coppa Italia [4] 61/62, 75/76, 86/87, 11/12, 13/14
UEFA Cup/Europa Leage [1] 88/89
Last finish: 2nd

A second place finish that really really should have been first if not for some seriously bad games and a temper tantrum by Higuain that cost him some crucial matches toward the end of the season is what Napoli managed to accomplish. Higuain and De Laurentiis have had enough of each other’s poo poo so after fattening him up with pizza and san gennaro pastries Big Aur’ sent him off to Juve on the cut rate price of 1 million Euros per kilo. It’s hard to say if Napoli are going ot be better or worse this season, they have the rest of their good player still and Sarri is a good manager, but it’s hard to see Milik coming up as big as Higuain did. Regardless they should be top three, it’s a question of where in that range.

Unione Sportivo Citta Di Palermo
Home City Palermo, Sicilia
Manager: Who even loving knows
Notable players in: yeah right
Notable players out: Alberto Gilardino (striker, Empoli), Franco Vazquez (striker, Sevilla)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 16th

Zamperini changed managers 7 times last season and he’s on a big roll now, so I wouldn’t expect that to change. The money from Vazquez will be invested in paying managers that were sacked 6 years ago. Palermo only managed to avoid the drop on the last day of the season, I expect them to be in the same position again this season. It’s grim down south.

Delfino Pescara 1936
Home City Pescara
Manager: Massimo Oddo (yes that Massimo Oddo!)
Notable players in: none
Notable players out: Gianluca Lapadula (striker, Milan)
Trophies: none at the top level
Last finish: Serie B playoff winners

We last saw Pescara fairly recently, when they blew away Serie B with the trio of Immobile, Insigne and Verratti. They’re back now, with ex Milan fullback Massimo Oddo at the helm after two tries in the Serie B playoffs. Their best player last year, Gianluca Lapadula, was sold to Milan pretty early in the window so it remains to be seen whether they’ll be able to cope without him. Pescara have some pretty fervent supporters and they have a relatively large stadium for a team of their size, it’ll make for an entertaining away trip. Also of note, remember Hugo Campagnaro? He’s still with them and he was insane in the promotion playoffs, total rock in the defense.

Associazione Sportiva Roma
Home City Roma
Manager: Luciano Spalletti
Notable players in: Juan Jesus (defender, Inter), Mario Rui (defender, Empoli), Thomas Vermaelen (defender, Barcelona)
Notable players out: Miralem Pjanic (midfielder, Juventus)
Trophies: Serie A [3] 41/42, 82/83, 00/01
Coppa Italia [9] 63/64, 68/69, 79/80, 80/81, 83/84, 85/86, 90/91, 06/07, 07/08
Last finish: 3rd

Roma likely has the best chance of causing an upset in the title race, but they’ll have to do without Pjanic, and that’s a big loss. Spalletti has the team working in his way, which is great, and it’ll be good to see him get the whole season. I think that if Garcia had gotten booted out earlier Roma would’ve been second. They’ll need to sign a midfielder that’s proven, but I otherwise it’s a solid squad.

Unione Calcio Sampdoria
Home City Genova
Manager: Marco Giampoalo
Notable players in: Anton Budimir (striker, Crotone), Burno Fernandes (midfielder, Udinese)
Notable players out: Roberto Soriano (midfielder, Villarreal)
Trophies: Serie A [1] 90/91
Coppa Italia [4] 84/85, 87/88, 88/89, 93/94
Cup Winners Cup [1] 89/90
Last finish: 15th

Walter Zenga had a bit of a loving mess of a season early on and that sort of ruined Samp’s chances from the get go but they managed to string together enough points to stay up just barely. The big story this summer has been Cassano getting canned or not, and Samp have made a few good signings while it’s been happening. If Giampaolo can replicate Budimir’s form from Serie B they’ll have a good shot at not only staying up but being comfortable.

Unione Sportivo Sassuolo Calcio
Home City Sassuolo
Manager: Eusebio Di Francesco
Notable players in: nobody really
Notable players out: Sime Vrsaljko (defender, Atletico Madrid), Nicola Sansone (striker, Villarreal)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 6th

Sassuolo have done nothing but good things for Italian football lately. They’re a well run organization with a plan and a manager who are steadily climbing the ranks of the Serie A hierarchy every year. They’ve secured European football for the first time in their history and in fact have already gotten through the first qualifying round. With the added attention of Europe now, they may have some issues with squad rotation for the league, but to be honest I don’t expect the foreign games to really add up unless there’s a bit of a miracle, so Sassuolo will go back to being everyone’s bogey team and Berardi will score 9 against Milan.

Torino Football Club
Home City Torino
Manager: Sinisa Mihajlovic
Notable players in: Iago Falque (striker, Roma), Adem Ljajic (striker, Inter)
Notable players out: Ciro Immobile (striker, Lazio via Sevilla)
Trophies: Serie A [7] 27/28, 42/43, 45/46, 46/47, 47/48, 48/49, 75/76
Coppa Italia [5] 35/36, 42/43, 67/68, 70/71, 92/93
Last finish: 12th

Torino have had a quiet transfer campaign but an effective one. With Ventura replacing Conte as Italy boss, Mihajlovic was brought in and immediately convinced Ljajic to join, which is a really good signing in my opinion. I expect Torino to challenge for Europe this season, despite what they did last season. It’s a good side and Mihajlovic is a great manager if he can get his players to work the way he wants.

Udinese Calcio
Home City Udine
Manager: Beppe Iacchini
Notable players in: none
Notable players out: Antonio Di Natale (retired)
Trophies: None at the top level
Last finish: 17th

This might be the season that Udinese get relegated, as Di Natale is no longer around to score those crucial goals and nobody of any note has been signed to replace him. Iacchini has a monster task in front of him and I honestly don’t think he’ll be able to cope with it. Udinese’s best chances are to hope that a few other teams melt down hard. On the positive side, Scuffet is technically back in their roster after his loan to Como, so maybe he’ll start getting some top flight starts.

Where can I watch?

In America
Bein sports carries the Serie A and will usually show a match at each time slot if Real Madrid or Barcelona isn’t playing at the time. If not on TV, it’ll be available on their app or their website (if you can get it to load).

RAI Italia carries a game in each time slot (lunch time, 1500 and 2045) on each game day, but the quality of the broadcast is really bad and also it’s in Italian!

In the UK
Somebody has it because sassassin keeps coming here to watch games and complain about how bad they are

Anywhere else
That subreddit with the football streams has every game, usually in English and HD.

What should I read?

La Gazzetta Dello Sport: Italian sports daily with an English language site that’s been getting better over the years. Most of their news is reliable, if a little later than twitter.

Football Italia: A English language site covering Italian football that updates constantly. One of my favorites for English language, they update constantly and generally have good opinions.

transfermarkt.it: A gigantic real life transfer database, the .it version is in Italian and covers Serie A on the first page, but if you go to the bottom there's a .co.uk version that's in English.

Who should I follow on twitter/facebook
The league itself actually has a very good social media presence, and they post all the time. They post a lot of good pictures and announce important things pretty quickly.

Tancredi Palmeri is a multilingual journalist who is mostly worth following during the transfer season for entertainment only; he’s mostly full of poo poo but every now and then he tells a good story about a player or a manager and such.

Gianluca Di Marzio is another good journalist who’s more serious than Palmeri and also has an English section on his website. He’s usually pretty reliable.

OptaPaolo for stat dorks

Calciatori Brutti, literally “ugly footballers”, is a pretty funny account that tweets a lot of humorous Italian sports things, usually about football. Every now and then they’re serious too. A good twitter account.

What to post about in this thread
Serie A, Serie B, Lega Pro (C1/C2) and Serie D if you are a sadist. You can also talk about the national team or topics related to Italy in general, but lets stick mostly to football.

Miscellaneous Important Things

Missed it in the old thread but supposedly the year after next Champions League will be a bit different - the big 4 (Premier League, Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A) will get 4 locked UCL places, 3 from the standings and one from historical placement (not sure if it's overall historical or like, Uefa standing for last x years). So for example this year it'd have been the first three plus one of Milan / Inter.

Also Fiorentina started buying Corvino-style with Milic and Maganjic coming from Hajduk Split, and possibly Corluka from Lokomotiv.

If you don't know them then shame on you for not knowing Hrvoje Milic, the Bale of Osijek. And what about young Josip Maganjic, aka the Sinj's born "heir of national hero Goran Vlaovic of Padova's fame". Corluka is this guy:

Seriously tho, they're (in order) an Alonso sub which we needed since booting Pasqual to the countryside, a 17 year old striker that is supposedly very good (Inter, West Ham and probably Sevilla wanted him too), and the Croatian national team Center-Back. Fiorentina, more like Croatina amirite?

Other notable purchases are Hagi's son Ianis (striker), winger Hernan Toledo from one of the million argentinian football robber baron funds, Tello from Barcelona as my esteemed colleague in suffering mentioned, midfielder Carlos "LA ROCA" Sanchez from Aston Villa, young polish goalkeeper Dragowski who you buy every time you start a game in Football Manager immediately and Enrico Chiesa's son Federico promoted from the youth team.

Fiorentina's strategy to the new limits to the squad (17 + 4 grown in the italian's youth teams + 4 grown in your own youth teams) has been to buy everyone under 21 years of age (as they have no limits) and compounding with a couple experienced guys - Corluka (maybe), Sanchez, Tello, Milic.

Cacati in mano e pigliati a schiaffi!

Also dragowski's number is 69. It was at his old club too.

Edit:

That's important because all 3 of the Violas keepers will not be opting for the traditional #1

Double edit: smart move buying youngsters. If they don't have to be Italian, you can just throw them in there for a bit and meet that requirement which I am sure will affect some clubs.

Here's a funny tidbit re: the thread title.

Mihajlovic would receive early morning, say 6.30 am, frequent calls from Berlusconi to discuss tactics and the formation. Eventually Mihajlovic went to bed and turned the phone off; the next day at Milanello B. asked M. why he'd do that, M. replied that he doesn't like being called that early, he wants to sleep at that time.

2 days later he was fired.

Yeah I totally missed that. Torino will have gotten a nice bag of money from that though, I think it was time to let him go, and I'm sure he's getting paid a lot more now as well.

As for the Tello bit, I got the two Tello's mixed up. There is another less prominent one, that is playing for Empoli!

I almost only follow Palermo right now because of everything in this post because nothing on the team even remotely says "this team is worth watching". Grim indeed. Maybe we need to go down and then down again and then build up a bit??

I'm afraid new owners would quickly lose interest with Palermo in Serie B.

But something got to happen. The team right now is pathetic. Sorrentino replaced with a 20 year old, who's only experience in 30 matches for NK Inter Zaprešić, and the reserve keepers are 21 and 19 years old, and completely unproven.

Vazquez and Gilardino (while being fairly poo poo, at least was a forward) has been replaced by trash that wasn't good enough last season and whoever the gently caress Nestorovski is.

Midfield is small and pretty much none existent.

Only the defense is slightly improved, and I fear that could get weakened by the time the transfer window shuts.

Surviving serie a this season would be a miracle.

It's incredible how badly Zamparini has ruined the team this season. It's going to be an uphill battle from day one.

Happy Ferragosto, lads.

(Also if Napoli ends up signing Icardi--which they might, though Inter keeps jacking up the price--I will firmly be on Team Maurito/Wandita and will drive like this at all times:)

Little known fact about Genoa Cricket and Football Club: after the club was given to italians, no one actually ever played cricket (they tried for a while but since nobody cared they stopped in 1900). They only started playing cricket again in 2007, although unfortunately they seem to have stopped playing now. The team was mostly made up of Pakistani immigrants, like the other cricket teams in Italy.

SS Lazio has an active cricket team.

idk probably because he was bad the last time he was in England and no one watches matches in Croatia or wherever he was, but I don't think that has anything to do with Carlos Sanchez being too slow and wasteful in possession to get a game for Villa

Not sure how reliable UOL is but Freitas is usually accurate in his reports, and the tweet made me  anyway:

Generally you hear these stories about how so and so from the team called up his fellow countryman to tell him to join during a transfer window, so I like to picture Miranda half-assedly trying to convince Gabigol to join and mid way through going "Eh, you know, forget about it; gently caress it, I'm leaving too"

They did after they sold mandzukic to Juve I think. In any case he is owned by them now.

I doubt the teams with big history thing will ever happen its a terrible idea

Bolded is the reason why it will likely happen.
Also, they like money, and not having teams with lots of non-European plastics in the UCL (because that's what they mean by "history"), I believe, results in monetary losses.
