popularity is one factor but we must also consider diversification and/or vertical integration coke is almost a pure beverage company while pepsi also holds or has held restaurant chains and snack food companies Since Apple is exclusively a hardware company and Microsoft has dabbled in hardware (zune, surface, etc), I support the contention that Microsoft is Pepsi.
