There is no legal reason to not include the KKK in this game. People write/film/etc poo poo that includes the klan all the time and the most that ever happened was a splinter klan group writing an angry letter to Mad Magazine back in, like, the 70s (Mad told them to gently caress off). I think some got upset at Oh Brother Where Art Thou but again they weren't dumb enough to file a lawsuit they would absolutely lose. Like so much else wrong with this game the answer boils down more to 'the publishers are dumb.'

Sir DonkeyPunch posted:Speaking of the Southern Union, feels weird that the "Rescue Human Trafficking Victims" quests are optional. Finished the game. That mid-credits scene was pretty good. What I actually enjoyed the most was that during the drive out to the casino the radio plays moody modern covers of songs from the game's soundtrack. It's a nice little touch that's actually pretty subtle too. Now I'm uninstalling this game and likely never touching it again. Thank you thread!

It's kind of weird that they spend so much cutscene time with the FBI guy and he never actually appears in the city at all. Like I was expecting a twist ending where he was Donovan (which was just a cover identity) and he wasn't really going after Lincoln.

At the beginning of the game doesn't Donovan mention to you that he borrowed most of the equipment from the 'feebs' (which I'm pretty sure is a derogatory nickname for the FBI) so that if something goes down they can't tie if back to the CIA? Also, I'm 35 hours into my first play through and I'm still not done. So, on this game, I hear a lot of bitching about the PC version, but how bad is it really? Essentially, I'm going to buy this game, and I'm trying to figure out: is it "it's not that well optimized and has serious problems holding 60fps" bad or is it "The PC version crashes/has save bugs/has real problems that prevents you from outright playing the game. You'd be better off buying it for PS4" bad?

10-15 frames with that get up? That doesn't sound like an optimisation problem - there has to be something else going on there.

In addition to being poorly optimized (which I've not really noticed since I have fairly current hardware) the game also looks like poo poo on the highest setting in places for no reason. Even on the highest graphical setting it looks like this thing belongs to another era. The chrome on most vehicles is really this textureless grey colour and the sky (when it's not clear) looks like some weird pixelated oil painting that's constantly shifting and everything has this 'aura' around it. It's like the tress and other things are sprites that don't have transparent background perfectly fitted. It's really strange in a modern game. It's hard to describe without seeing it in motion.

ZombyDog posted:You can eliminate most of that effect ( if you're running an Nvdia card, I have no idea about any AMD equivalent ) by turning down ingame AA and using DSR ( I'm using the 1.77 ratio for 2560x1440 on a 1920x1080 monitor). You shouldn't see any difference in framerate but that weird halo effect is a result of their AA. I had tried playing around with all that - adjusting AA, removing depth of field, playing around with the shadows - but every time I restarted the game it would reset some of the setting and I just gave up after a while. It was mostly a tradeoff of what you didn't mind looking like poo poo. The worst was the game looking like a blurry mess; as if I was standing 50'-60' away and trying to play without my glasses on. None of the changes fix things like all the colours being washed out, the sky looking like poo poo or things like chrome being a flat grey no matter what. I could overlook the shallowness of the gameplay to some degree if the game was at least pretty to look at, but god drat it's like they cut every corner they could to ship this ASAP. The (main) story is interesting but that's really all it has going for it. I think my gaming OCD is the only thing that keeps me plowing through this one bit at a time. Someone mentioned earlier in the threat that this game is best played in brief spurts so the sameness didn't wear on you and they were absolutely right.

I've noticed the game running a bit better recently. I don't know if it was new drivers or the patches but whatever works. I do think that this game was originally a 360/PS3 game that got shelved and brought back out at a later time. The texture quality, some of the models, and how the engine works make it seem like it's pretty old. Things you would expect to be breakable in this day and age are solid and unmoving like they would be in an older game. It makes me sad because I really like this game, it's got some cool stuff in it but it has some real issues.

Spoilery question for those that have beaten the game. I know Joe and Leo show up in Mafia 3 thanks to an rear end in a top hat friend. My question is, do they have any bearing on the core plot, or are they entirely tied to Vito's sidequests?

I thought it was kind of weird how when you beat the game and load back into the game it puts you before you make the choice. Something goofy happened when I (ending spoiler) chose the "kill" ending. Father James puts a bomb under your car but when I left the car I took wasn't immediately there so I just took one of the other ones. Which made it look like he just put bombs in all the cars there.

Wow, this thread is completely dead already. Did not expect that. I just finished the game and really enjoyed it. Definitely best played in one hour doses, I pushed hard to finish today and can see how it would be tiresome for those who finished weeks ago. Also can't understand how it's physically possible to finish this weeks ago, but that's another story. Great plot, great driving and shooting, great setting, nice graphics besides some weird lighting. I know the PC version was a turd but I don't understand why I'm in such a small minority in thinking it was great. Usually I'm much more picky than the average goon.

There's no reason whatsoever to replay it, there's absolutely nothing to do outside of the repetitive main story missions. Once you're done, you're done. There's nothing to flesh out story wise either, it's pretty straight forward, guy gets angry, guy gets revenge, maybe that bald guy was joe. It's also currently in that period where there's a huge gap between what it's worth and what the price is. The thread will probably pick back up when it's $20 on steam during the christmas sale, but until then i think everybody is done with it, either through completion or frustration.

I'm on my second playthrough, just have the French Ward left. I dunno, I don't think every game NEEDS to have GTA like side stuff, but as fleshed out as some parts of this game feels, there is precious little to do other than the colored missions you get in each district. Even the collectibles feel pointless because they don't have more than one save slot like 2, and even though I don't consider myself an achievement pursuer, the thought of having no reward for actually clearing the map of blips is..empty? Fun game, but I really don't see myself getting random cars off the street and just driving around watching them get dirty like I would do in 2. Kinda sad, really.

When you play it for a while and after every good/interesting mission you are forced to do a lot of busy work to get to the next one it kills whatever goodwill the rest of the game builds up. Having it work like the previous Mafia games where the only think you had to do was get back to base/go to sleep would have worked better, I mean even Saints Row did away with having to do fill a bar to unlock plot missions because it dragged the game down and their system was a lot better to start with. I actually went back and played Mafia 2 a second time and I like it a whole lot more now than I did when I played it the first time a few years ago, having to follow the traffic laws and stuff is a more interesting social stealth game than Assassin's Creed and makes you care about how your drive and treat your car since it can also be wanted instead of just you. In fact I felt more watched and oppressed by the cops in 2 than I ever did in 3 despite it making a point of it. Now the question is if I should go back and play the first game for like the tenth time.
