I'm in the "Loved Mafia I and II so I'm onboard regardless" crowd. I did think the Drive from the north of the map to the south video looked a little murky around the edges, but between the sound track, the protagonist, the cars, the city that isn't New York/L.A. ( C'mon, who hasn't wanted to drive a fan boat through the Everglades ) I'm still hype as gently caress.

Wait what? Considering what the developers have been trying to do with Mafia 3, I don't see why game sites wouldn't critique social issues and morality. In fact, its an aspect of gaming that is basically at the forefront that I really don't trust most youtubers to be able to handle competently.
I think the issue ( and the reason why youtubers are becoming more prevalent ) is that nobody trusts the game sites either.

In preparation for this, I never played 2 but I played the first game to death, so I've been playing Mafia 2.

It still looks surprisingly good despite being 6 years old, it oozes atmosphere and has loads of personality.

I have about 5 or 6 hours with the game so far, I've hit some frustrating missions(love getting gang raped by a horde of cops right out of the gate) here and there and it crashed a couple of times.(fixed the crashing by running in Win7 compatibility mode, I'm on Win10)

Otherwise, the combat is merely okay I wouldn't get the game if you want thrilling gunfights and things like that, the voice acting is great, vehicles are fun to drive especially with simulation mode turned on, the sounds of the city... the music... and the vehicles are all spot on and beautiful.

The biggest, absolute biggest mark against the game is obviously the open world. It does nothing with it, it's more of a wide open stage for the story to take place on. There's no side missions and no activities... there's some fun collectibles(vintage Playboy mags!) to hunt down but that's about it. It doesn't bother me THAT much but I'm just laying it out there for potential players that want GTA in the 40s.(get The Saboteur if you want that maybe)

The game has a great story so far and that's definitely enough to keep me playing it, I'm not sure what to expect with the DLC missions, perhaps someone can chime in there.
Joe's Adventure features is his story line picking up while Vito is serving time, and to be honest I started it, never really got very far into it because I wasn't really compelled to follow what happened to Joe during this period, and knowing what happens to him at the end of Mafia II. I don't think it was necessary for the main story line and would have disrupted the narrative flow had it not been pulled out of the game and sold as DLC. Jimmy's Vendetta is something again I've not really gotten into but it's mini mission icons that are scattered all over the map that you get graded on time and performance ( kill streaks, head shots and that kind of thing ).

I'm only a couple of hours in now and about to mess with the Dixie Mafia at the cinema, and so far so good. Presentation of the story has been great, music has been great, the driving has been great. Did have one CTD just after the end of cutscene in the soup kitchen but otherwise no dramas. I think the cover system could do some work, especially when transitioning to a new position ( I've been spoiled by games that do it better, like The Division ), and visually the game can look a bit murky at times - a lot of that I think is due to the dynamic lighting system ( especially around sunrise & sunset ), ending up with things like car surfaces looking flat and poorly textured instead of shiny and reflective.

That said, I'm loving just cruising through the city with the radio blaring.

This game would be infinitely better if there was a "story only mode" so you didn't have to do 10 randomly generated "dismantling" missions to get to the main targets.
Then I believe that game you want is Mafia II, the game that was being lambasted earlier in the thread for not using it's world except as a set dressing for it's story campaign.

I read that using DSR set at 1.5 is a good idea to fix the blurry graphics, what should the DSR - Smoothness slider be set at when you enable DSR? It defaults to 33%.
I left it at the default 33% myself.

Okay, I'm enjoying this game so far but a few things are confusing me.

1. I just killed the redneck leader and hung him from the ferris wheel, and it unlocked an 'optional chapter'. I completed it once, saw some dialogue, but the same mission is still listed there. Is it infinitely repeatable, and if so, is there any other actual story behind it after the initial clear?

2. I only have the one underboss so far, but can someone explain the handing out territory/unlocking perks poo poo to me? I don't get it at all.

3. Are there any hidden missions or anything or does the game basically point you towards them all?

4. Is it supposed to be raining -all the time-? Even when the sun is out?

5. Why does the bayou look like this? Everything has a border of light around it.

EDIT: Just watched that Mafia 3 vs. 2 video linked above and wow. I didn't realize 2 had aged so well. Makes me sad that 3 feels so.. buggy and unfinished, despite the great story, gunplay and cutscenes.

1. So Cassandra has her her guy, Emmanuel Lazare who you can run weed delivery missions for, but only once per racket ( there are two rackets per territory, ie the Church and the Cinema in the Hollow ).

2. Despite only being 18 hours in I've only started on one of the Capo's turf ( Enzo Conti ) but after the initial territories, when you take over a racket you can choose which Associate get's that racket and it should tell you the bonus you get from each of the Associates. Ultimately there are 10 bonuses per Associate, and each racket ( and the additional mission per racket ) increases their earnings which in turn gives you the higher level bonuses.

3. Game pretty much points you to them all

4. Nope, the weather should be pretty dynamic between overcast & rainy and sunny

5. No idea, looks like result of visual settings or limitations of your GPU.

I did. The game seems very poorly optimized. I've run GTA V and Witcher 3 both at 60 FPS on high to max settings, so I really don't understand how a game that looks markedly worse than both of those can run so much worse at half the framerate.
We might need some more info - to give you an idea I'm getting 40-60 FPS with an i5, 16GB Ram, GTX 980, the game on a mechanical drive, at 2351x1323 ( DSR 1.5x ) with the settings at optimal except for motion blur off.

How do I get to start the pick up the airdrop weed missions? I have a map marker, and a guy to talk to, but getting a boat doesn't do anything.
You'll need to play a bit of a where's waldo in the bayou district of the map, and look for a purple weed icon, that's your next destination ( it won't show you a gps route because it will invariably be a location inaccessible by road ).

Keep in mind that once you've run the first two weed delivery missions it will continue to leave a mission marker in the bayou for an additional weed delivery mission, but will not actually spawn the boat & bad guys until you have captured a new racket for Cassandra to deliver the weed to ( this is deffo a bug as I imagine it shouldn't be showing the mission icon when the mission isn't available ).

Drive through the gate, park the car near the demountable building, kick open the locked door, grab the porn then die in a glorious hail of bullets. So you might want to call your concierge first. Alternatively, call in Vito's boys and use them as a distraction.

Is there a cap on how much kickback can be accrued at a racket bosses hideout? Not sure if driving across town to pick up kickback all the time is worth it.

There's a concierge upgrade where she'll collect your kickbacks as well as deposit your on hand cash.

I've eliminated a lot of blur with disabling DOF, Motion Blur, AA on low then using DSR ( setting AA to low also helped a lot with the lighting aura effect you'd get during sunrise & sunset ).

How high you going with DSR? Hows the performance hit on that? I'm barely keeping a stable 60 on my new 1080@ 1440
I've only gone 1.5x DSR so far, and so far there is absolutely no difference in frame rate bewteen DSR and running at 1920x1080 ( I did make the effort to check when I was playing around with it ). Your 1080 will have way more room to move than my 980 so you should be able to push it way harder assuming the UI all scales correctly at the higher resolutions.

I was expecting things clothing to buy, or businesses to purchase, cars to upgrade. Does feel strange in retrospect. Overall I still really liked the focus on the plot and storytelling.
I'm 44 hours into my first play though, I'm about to go on the hunt for Sal Marcarno but after I finish doing favours for Vito and Burke, and I only have 3k in the bank and 700 bucks in my wallet.

So after 47 hours I've finished it and I have to say I'm still firmly in the game's good camp. I was lucky in that I only had 5 real bugs to speak of ( two ctds, two instances of duplicated npcs in cutscenes ( the end of Cassandra and Burke's favour missions ) and a weed boat that went pinwheeling into the sky as I approached the mission zone, but reset after I drove around elsewhere on the map. I didn't have to push myself to take over the districts and I enjoyed just driving around the map. I do get the complaints about the repetition, but I felt that I was able to change stuff up enough to keep things fresh. I do think the cover system could have been a little better, I couldn't even get going around corners to work properly, and quality of life stuff like being able to switch shoulders would have been great.

It's kind of weird that they spend so much cutscene time with the FBI guy and he never actually appears in the city at all. Like I was expecting a twist ending where he was Donovan (which was just a cover identity) and he wasn't really going after Lincoln.
You learn in the cutscenes that the FBI had been stymied pretty early on because someone had nicked all of their gear :ninja: so they were pretty much behind the 8 ball the whole time during Lincoln's war of terror.

The chrome on most vehicles is really this textureless grey colour and the sky (when it's not clear) looks like some weird pixelated oil painting that's constantly shifting and everything has this 'aura' around it. It's like the tress and other things are sprites that don't have transparent background perfectly fitted. It's really strange in a modern game. It's hard to describe without seeing it in motion.
You can eliminate most of that effect ( if you're running an Nvdia card, I have no idea about any AMD equivalent ) by turning down ingame AA and using DSR ( I'm using the 1.77 ratio for 2560x1440 on a 1920x1080 monitor). You shouldn't see any difference in framerate but that weird halo effect is a result of their AA.

I finally got around to finishing this (after 46 hours played so far) and I definitely didn't expect things to take the turn they did at the very end... kinda pissed though as Vito's "In Need a Favor" mission got screwed up after the briefing for the 4th target and I was never able to fix it, so I never saw the end of the quest and I wasn't about to start over at that point. Did it change anything at the end and help shed light on the driver? Guess I'll just look it up.
