man I'm loving terrified of the precedent this sets oh wait I'm not because the real precedent is "you'll get your rear end handed to you if you ignore a judge's order to take down a stolen sex tape and then declare you're willing to post video of a preteen having sex while under oath in a court of law"

mike12345 posted:what precedent? if you disgruntle your investors or people with the money to fight back, you'll get hosed. If you're a journalist in russia, you get killed; if you're working for Al Jazeera and want to make a feature about immigrant working conditions, you're out of a job. gawker became the victim of their own hubris, and forgot for a second they're still part of the same game. Gawker was no bastion of free speech or critical journalism, it was a cynical clickbait enterprise with an ethics schmethics attitude masquerading as edgy self-awareness.

Peter Thiel is bad. Gawker was bad. Im glad one killed the other. I guess the lesson here is to not forcibly out a powerful billionaire gay man for shits and giggles because he will bide his time until you have another massive lapse in judgement and hypocritically host a celebrity sex tape and then fund that case in a court of law so that justice prevails instead of the usual outcome of the media conglomerate settling out of court or bankrupting the litigant. Truly, all news media that outs gays and hosts sex tapes is now at risk in this new dystopian future. Thanks Thiel. Thiel.

Badger of Basra posted:yeah or do anything else an insane billionaire might find objectionable, nbd no need to worry about that If by insane billionaire you mean 'any reasonable person' I guess. Gawker was poo poo and deserved death, and Im glad that for once a billionaire took a break from bathing in the blood of the poor and did something socially responsible with his money. And Id be way more sympathetic to the insane billionaire angle if Thiel had bought Gawker and killed it, or bought out the advertisers and run nothing but scat porn ads, or bought their web host and shut them down. Instead he funded an entirely reasonable case against Gawker that centered on Gawker being a trash outfit. Gawker could have avoided the whole thing by not hosting a celebrity sex tape without consent. 'Insane billionaire supports privacy against tabloid reporting' doesnt really sound that bad to be honest.

If Lowtax paid me to write death fantasies, published my death fantasies, and then defended my death fantasies as good posting and exactly the kind of thing he intended when creating SA then yeah, perhaps it would be legit to protest all the death fantasies. Especially if Lowtax was condemning the other death fantasies out there at the time as immoral and bad because they targeted the wrong sort of people.

The NYT is the foulest propaganda institution ever conceived by man and I look forward to the day when it's editors are fed into the printing machines. That being said I pick up a copy whenever I get the chance because they are free on my campus. It's not that what they say is objectively wrong, it's more about what they don't say and about how they contextualize the information.

I just dont sympathize with the people who hosted a sex tape against the wishes of the person in it and then defended it as good journalism. Maybe dont do that and then you will be less vulnerable to predatory lawsuits from the rich guy you forcibly outed also in the name of good journalism. The Gawker apologism is kind of weird. Do you guys defend the journalistic rights of Breitbart too?

The real issue is that normal people could never afford to competently prosecute such a case. Money is the gatekeeper.
