When you think of quintessential American filmmakers, I don't think there's many in the same rank as Martin Scorsese. He started making films as part of the wave of New Hollywood filmmakers that brought a new freshness to cinema in the late 60s/early 70s. Scorsese always brings snappy camera work, editing, and outstanding musical choices to his films. Lead by an outstanding cast in nearly all of his work. He also makes New York City into a living, breathing character. He also has an incredibly varied filmography, ranging from gritty mob movies like Goodfellas and Mean Streets to sensitive dramas like The Age of Innocence and Kundun. One thing I admire about Scorsese is that he's absolutely crazy about film. He's heavily inspired by greats like Powell & Pressburger, Howard Hawks, and Nicholas Ray. I'd have to say part of why he's such a great filmmaker is because he's a complete expert on film. He's even made several documentaries just about films - one 4-hour doc on American cinema and another on Italian films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9xHpS10CZ0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV6aLk9bZ_E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHhzOM4gBIA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3QpxNI-PtE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJXDMwGWhoA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHVUPri5tjA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FebPJlmgldE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auYbpnEwBBg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR-kP-olcpM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pabEtIERlic

Goodfellas is a perfect movie. Also, I love how he cast his parents in several of his films. His mother voices Rupert's mother in The King of Comedy and is Tommy's mother in Goodfellas. I haven't seen it, but I think Italianamerican, an early 70s documentary, is mostly about his parents. For his recent films, Hugo is probably my favorite since Goodfellas. Even cooler that it's one of the best 3-D films I've seen.

IMDB says The Irishman will be Scorsese's next movie after Silence is released. Cast includes Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, and Joe Pesci.

caligulamprey posted:After Hours is underappreciated. It's just a fun movie. It's high on my queue. I also want to point out that Martin Scorsese is a tremendous supporter and patron for film preservation. He started The Film Foundation, World Cinema Project, and a few others to fund and save films. The Film Foundation helped back the restorations of The Red Shoes, The Night of the Hunter, All That Jazz, Hitchcock's silent films, The Apu Trilogy, The Leopard, early films by Kenneth Anger and Stan Brakhage, and even Scorsese's own The King of Comedy. Not to mention a bunch of lesser known world films. It's just neat that such a prominent filmmaker does so much to protect the work of other filmmakers.

Ema Nymton posted:OK, so within the universe of the film, is this down there by the wall the same person as the guy in the backseat of Travis' car who wants to kill someone? Or are they twin brothers? Same guy. Maybe his wife works in there. Or if you want to go full insane fan theory, his real name is Henry Krinkle. Travis used the name so the police would stop him from murdering his wife and her...

Thoughts on Scorsese films I've seen; The Big Shave - One of the best student films and it's really obvious Scorsese was into Kenneth Anger's films at the time. Mean Streets - Awesome. Harvey Keitel is underrated as a great actor. Taxi Driver - Perfect. The Last Waltz - Just a lot of good music beautifully shot. Raging Bull - Leave it to Scorsese making a beautiful, humanistic film about a piece-of-poo poo boxer The King of Comedy - Scorsese should do more comedies with DeNiro. Goodfellas - MASTERPIECE. I could watch this forever on a loop. A Personal Journey Through American Cinema - Marty talks about important American films for 3 1/2 hours. Great for a good starting point on films to catch up on. Gangs of New York - It's alright, though Daniel Day-Lewis is perfect. The Aviator - Awesome. I love how the color changes throughout the movie to match the time period. The Departed - I think it's a terrific film, even if It's not one of my favorites. Hugo - Scorsese does a fun kid's movie and lecture on early cinema. One of my favorite films. The Wolf of Wall Street - I saw this while having a 102 degree fever from the flu, which is how most people should watch it. (I've got Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Casino, and Shutter Island somewhere in storage; Boxcar Bertha on my DVR)
